A couple of weeks ago Klangdon was asked whether masten or Palmer was the better pickup. klangdon reckons, based on performances to date, it is line ball but masten was the better pickup because he will perform better in the long run.

Correct.

How many did you guys debut last year?

IIRC, after 2006 where you guys made the prelim, you thought to top up with Tarrant and Solomon and go for a flag. After 2007 though it was clear you weren't going to make it, so many delistments made plus retirements - which makes the drafting of Mark Johnson . But you guys had a few good ones last year right? At least Palmer and Chris Mayne were good.

Last year freo had Palmer, Mayne and Hinkley and although he played 1 game in 2007 Ibbo stood up and played 19 games in his break out year

Last year would have been less than 4 i think, Palmer, Mayne, Hinkley... can't remember any others...

Last year was the first time in the clubs history in which we have done a clean out.... we haven't gone for the quick fix (****ing connelly and schwab..... ) and thats why its exciting for Fremantle fans at the moment.... yes we are losing....

But this weekend against the eagles we have 9 first year players in the one side..... thats insane!

Bump..

Just wondering if anyone knows if this has changed (minus Gold Coast and gws of course).

Brisbane as of Saturday will be up to 10 debutants

St Kilda wouldn't be far behind in terms of debutants, we've played just about every player on our list this season.

All but 3 by the look at it. Can't seem to find the exact number thought.

From our senior list only two players haven't played this year, Markworth and Pierce, and Pierce might debut against Adelaide.

St Kilda used 62 players in 1911, 41 of which were debutants. Since the "AFL era", it's 21 by Collingwod in 1987

Since 2009 when the thread was started
14 Western Bulldogs 2011
13 Richmond 2010
12 St Kilda 2013
12 Melbourne 2013
12 Collingwood 2013
12 Brisbane Lions 2014
11 Fremantle 2009
11 Brisbane Lions 2011
10 Sydney 2010
10 St Kilda 2014
10 St Kilda 2011
10 Richmond 2009
10 Port Adelaide 2010
10 Melbourne 2009
10 Geelong 2012

These include players who have played elsewhere previously.

Essendon only used one in 1964, the only such instance.

9 this year for North
But that includes Nahas, Tippett and NDS, who already debuted elsewhere.

Proper debutants:
Currie
McDonald
Wood
Warren
Turner
Brown

Wilkins, Dumont and Curran the only senior-listed players yet to debut, + Hine, Harper & Garner who played last year but not this year.

I heard on the radio the other day that the top 3 this year was Hawthorn, Brisbane and Essendon. Not sure how accurate it was though.

There is a problem using recruits from other clubs.

I looked into this re Collingwood last year and know we had 8 true debutants plus anther 4 who had played around 40 games total between them entering the season. Those 12 played a total of a little over 25% of the total senior agmes the whole group played for the year.

This year when people think of us being very young we have only 3 debutants Langdon (18 games) Broomhead (7) and Ramsay (1). Gault will make a 4th tonight.

Melbourne are at 9 for the season:

From other clubs making MFC debut - Cross, Tyson, Vince, Riley, Michie
Making AFL debut - Salem, JKH, Barry, Georgiou

Besides our late round pick up Jayden Hunt the only other senior player not to play an AFL game is Jesse Hogan. Obviously Mitch Clark didn't play all season but only 2 others didn't play one game from the senior list and 2 rookies. So we got through 37 of the 44.

I think that Adelaide played 37 players in their first season in 1991. Of those. I can only identify 3 as having played AFL before - Murphy, McGuinness and Mickan.

Well you missed out on a few....

- Michael Murphy played 3 games for North Melbourne before kicking 41 goals from 16 games in 1991-2.

- Tony McGuiness, you got correct. (Should of been crows 1st captain for 1991-2 due to his 100 VFL games with the Bulldogs).

- Mark Mickan had 4 years and 48 games at Brisbane from 1987-1990 .

Some other blokes you didn't mention.

- Grantley Fielke is from west Adelaide. Played 16 games for Collingwood in 1987.

- Danny Hughes a Port Magpie . 124 games from 1984-1990. Played in the 1988 grand final. Will be remembered at the crows for being dominated by Tony Lockett in that 1991 game at Moorabbin oval.

- Bruce Linder another west Adelaide player. 66 games for the cats before being in the crows 1991 AFL side

- Bruce Abernathy another Port Magpie. 43 games for North Melbourne in 1982-83 and 58 games for Collingwood in 1984-86.

So similar to the west coast 1987 list. They too had 35 players and 7 of them previously played at VFL or AFL clubs.
