Honestly? He f*cked off for more cash. Surprised he's only got 2 votes. I remember the Colbert saga like it was yesterday. I still think what Ablett did was worse.
At least Ablett helped deliver 2 premierships.

I can't wait to read GAJ's autobiography - I'd love to know just how close he was to not leaving Geelong, whether Bomber's antics helped make his mind up, whether he regretted his decision to leave Geelong when Bomber walked out, etc. In his first year at GC he seemed a reluctant Sun, which is understandable. I know now he is a Sun for life

Did Silvagni do something in the moments leading upto the Milburn hit or was it a spontaneous decision?
It seemed like Milburn had been lining him up from a good 30 feet away

No. It was simply an opportunity and Milburn took it.

It needs to be remembered, it was 13 seasons ago now. Although the game was well and truly in the process of being sanitised, it wasn't like it is now. There were plenty (and I'm one of them) who shared the view what Milburn did was fine - the ball was right there, he used his hip, and he didn't use or raise an arm. I watched the game with a Carlton-supporting mate who thought that. The faux outrage that plenty indulged in afterwards I think was mainly because Silvagni being the victim. If Silvagni had done that to Milburn, there would not have been outrage, and there almost certainly would have been the routine giggles about how soft Geelong players were.

If people want to discuss the wisdom of Milburn clapping the Carlton supporters, that's a different argument. Probably not the best idea. Even so, for those who were there, the 'near riot' was nowhere near as bad as people made out. The game was nearly over, everyone was drenched, most fans just wanted to leave.

Wow, very embarrassing for us, we traded away pick 11 in the 2000 draft. Who we could have had Burgoyne, Scott Thompson, or a few other gems around that selection. Gave him back a year later for pick 23, which we picked up Charlie Gardner in 2001 for that pick.

It's just the way it was at the time, by the look of things. Teams threw early draft picks around like confetti for has-beens and mediocre talents. We were on the good end of that on many occasions.

didn't we get Murphy as part of a trade and he didn't even want to play for Geelong but had to for that year in question?

Quite embarrassing to think of some of the names we use to recruit. The off cuts that others didn't want to keep

Even more so that he was one of our better players that year.

I don't hate any of them. Didn't really know what was going on at the time with the likes of Murphy and Colbert. Didn't hate them at the time, didn't hate them for the rest of their careers and it seems silly to start hating them now.

I would suggest that Liam Pickering and David Clarke Sr would be worthy nominations though, as both of their post-footy careers have caused a lot of hatred to be directed towards them by Geelong people. And if Bomba gets a nomination, I guess that would make Cresswell eligible too? If 'he left for more money' is reason enough, Mumford.

Its wrong that Carlton supporters still remember "that" day. I can't remember what number Dean Solomon wore for Freo, and what he did to Lingy was worse

And why would (or should) a Carlton supporter care about that?

It was a cheap shot during one of the lowest points for the club in my life, it was a cheap shot that involved a player whose season was over knocking out a player (who had to be stretchered off) who had a finals series to play in, which has its own implications (Ling was back from his injury by Round 18). And to add insult to injury (literally) Milburn stupidly chose to fan the flames and incite the Carlton crowd as he was coming off. He nearly caused a riot. That game was nothing short of a disgrace all round. To his credit, Milburn had about fifteen largely brainfart-free years to his credit and that can be looked on as an anomaly by us and by the football public, at large. But the Carlton supporters can feel whatever they want to feel about that incident and good luck to them.

The simple point I am making is that both incidents occurred many years ago - the Silvagni hit was in 2001.

Milburn's hit was stupid and cheap, and in today's game would have copped him 6 weeks. But it was in play, and it was a hip & shoulder. Milburn's antics afterwards were equally stupid.

Solomon's was worse. Ling had disposed of the ball and he raised his arm / elbow, breaking Ling's jaw. It could have ended Ling's season

I'd include Brent Prismall in that list. Injured his knee in a Qualifying Final, and Frank Costa at either the Grand Final dinner or Best and Fairest (I was at each, and can't remember which one it was) stated publicly he would be offered a new contract even though they knew 2009 would be a write-off. Prismall's response was to stalk off to Essendon to become the superstar he was convinced he would be. Didn't quite happen somehow.

Give me a spell mate... If Silvagni hadn't decided to shorten his steps leading up to the impact he probably would have been fine!

The cheap shot from Solomon on Ling was much worse.

Carlton supporters can go and **** themselves. They carried on like Silvagni was the first and only person to ever be knocked out in a game of footy.

They should watch the clip of Ray Card collecting Keith Greig. If Milburn had hit Silvagni with the force Card did there wouldn't have been anything left.

And my point is why would we expect Carlton supporters to let Milburn off the hook, because of Solomon's actions? If Solomon was playing for Carlton that day, or even if he played for Carlton at any point in his career, it might be relevant. Do non-Carlton supporters consider Milburn to be a **** because of that incident? I'd say the majority don't. Carlton supporters hold a grudge against him and they have every right to. Whatever floats their boat.

Beyond that, there are certain implications of doing something like what Milburn did in Round 22, as a member of a team that was getting absolutely flogged and wasn't going to feature in September (and playing against a team that was going to be in the finals). Furthermore, since Silvagni did play finals that year ('could have ended Ling's season'? Being carted off on a stretcher could have been the last thing SOS ever did on a footy field, since he retired at the end of that season. Would he have been cleared to play now with the more stringent concussion tests? Should he have been? Who knows?). And if Milburn had just left it at that, he wouldn't cop half the heat he does. But he decided to do the tough guy routine, inciting the crowd and forcing security to take action, before the Carlton supporters took matters into their own hands. Did Solomon do that? I don't think he did. Solomon also immediately, publicly and unreservedly apologised to Ling and the Cats for his actions, calling it '...one of the lowest points in my career.' Milburn has publicly said 'I would have done the same thing every other time' about the Silvagni incident and due to his desire to avoid the media, I don't think it's known whether he ever apologised to SOS.

Card was a much harder player than Milburn, pound for pound as hard a hitter as Ablett.

All i was saying is I've moved on from the Solomon incident. If there are still Carlton supporters clinging to the Milburn incident 14 years later, they need to get a life. Of course the two are unrelated.

Solomon was finished. Milburn played over 200 more games after that, nearly 20 of those being finals and won two premierships. If Solomon was still going around this year and another three years after and Geelong supporters had seen him playing against their club 1-2 times a year, every year, for a decade after the incident, it might be a different story. It's apples and oranges and again, Solomon did everything right immediately after his incident and in the subsequent days. Ling accepted his apology. Milburn did everything wrong immediately after his incident and there is no evidence that he ever apologised to Silvagni that I'm aware of.

People here are focusing on the hit. What happened after the hit is at least as much of a reason why Carlton supporters refuse to forgive and forget. It's one thing to snipe an opponent in front of his home crowd, resulting in him being stretchered off. It's quite another to proceed to rub those supporters' noses in it, like you're in the WWE or something.

So on this do we need to add Milburn to the list of most disliked Cats? Rhetorical question because I know the answer is no........... Isn't it?

Don't mention that fact on the main forum, last time I did so, it went into meltdown.
Haha! Fair enough, but he didn't go back with full commitment though did he? If he did he would have gotten to Milburn long before he left the ground.

Geelong supporters don't dislike Milburn. If you put the topic on the main board, he'd be a candidate, along with Selwood, Johnson, Mooney, Scarlett...

Possibly. It comes down to everyone's particular viewpoint. My own is that Solomon's apology was about as honest and sincere as any public statement by a modern sportsman. Which isn't much.

My dad doesn't follow footy (never has), yet he still refers to the Solomon incident whenever he sees Ling commentating while I'm watching the TV. He reckons it was a dog act.
Your name's not Darryl Kerrigan, is it?
