Most Heartbreaking Loss

Stealing this idea from the Geelong board to bridge the time where there’s not much going on in footy land.

Unsurprisingly 2008 GF dominated their board.

For me it’s a split between the 2011 Prelim and “The cat is still on the back” game. You know the one.

Was at them both, that cats theme song intro used to absolutely haunt me. Every time they’d just get out of jail but that one was the real icing that we just couldn’t knock them off during the year

The 2011 prelim was more just a bit of hope we could knock Collingwood off. They were an unbelievable side in 2011 and we absolutely deserved to win that game in my mind. What a grand final the week after would’ve been

2012 Grand Final loss. Because some of our very best football we played in our era was that year, and probably the most attacking and exciting year too, so it felt like the loss meant that was forgotten. Also we had so many chances in that grand final to win. Probably helped us become the team we did but wow did it sting at the time.

2001 Preliminary final was the most painful until then. I hadnt seen much success as a Hawk, started supporting in 92, and was a slow decline and then not much finals at all. 2001 was the closest, and I remember getting up my sofa, arms raised when Croady kicked it from 50 thinking it was home but it hit the post, and not to be. Ouch.

Watched this is in Japan and my face was imprinted with the indentation of a tatami mat i laid face down upon, depressed unable to get up. Thank F for 2013!

Those 2 immediately came to my mind.
I thought we had it with Croady's bomb too.
84 GF as an 8 year old was hard to take.
94 Overtime loss to the roos was a tough one.
In more recent times, both losses to Port last year were hard to take.

I'll also add the 2007 Semi loss to the Roos. After the high of the win against Adelaide the previous week, we just never quite showed up.

Is that the one where Hawkins kicked the goal on the siren? I remember laughing - you know the crazed I can’t believe it’s happening version

That was one absolute gun of a game though

Yep, and we were also comprehensively umpired out of that game, which was extremely disappointing.

I put it up there (maybe down there) with the '01 PF in that regard....

1984 grannie by a long way then 2012
I had just moved over from Canberra to Melbourne in late 1983 as an eight year old. We were a rugby family up until then.

My dad said “you’re Hawthorn and you’re Essendon” - the latter to my sister. I did live near Hawthorn so there was logic.

Great way for my sister and I to “bond” over the next three years. 😂

I was an arseh*le in 1983. Boy did I get it back

It was. I think that’s the worst part about all the losses, there were so many unbelievable games there. Huge momentum swings, games chock full of multiple hall of famers on both sides.

That Brisbane v Hawks in 1995 when they overrun us by 45 points hurt so bad for me at the time. Especially at the time when big comebacks as that that weren't common and Brisbane were not a great side back then either.

Never been so heartbroken - except for that rare GF loss of course. ;)

1984 GF - just stopped
2012 GF - kicked ourselves out of it
2011 Prelim - just plain fk'd up in last minute
2016 Qualifying Final v cats - blew a chance of 4 in a row,
That's my top 4, still feel sick thinking about it and the memories of being there

Beat me to the punch. But there is no second. 10 year old footy obsessed Hawk boy left with a broken heart and lifelong PTSD slightly mended by 8 subsequent premierships. Explains most of my irrationally rational absolute hatred for Essenscum and Kevin Sheedy. 💔

2012 GF - drank myself into oblivion that night.

2012 - Tom Hawkins after the siren. Broke a phone.

2024 against Port Adelaide in the final 2 seconds. Hated how devastated I felt for the entire subsequent week that I started buying and reading novels to give myself a new winter hobby.

2012 GF.

I stormed out a the siren went and went straight to the 7-11 on Wellington and bought a packet of cigarettes (I'd quit 4 years earlier).

Had a friend's party but just chugged on the cigs all night on the balcony, drowning my sorrows.

I still enjoy a cheeky smoke here and there, and I blame that game for it.
