Most Heartbreaking Loss

84 by a long way for me.

(By 2012 I kind of had the emotional maturity to deal with it; also I'd just been made redundant and was looking down the barrel of a mortgage with no income and two relatively young kids, so losing a game of footy ranked pretty low in comparison).

This is a good one. I was at that game and it was a unique feeling.

But for me it's 2012 GF. I can still feel it. The 3peat helped but doesn't take away the devastation of the final siren
I, too, was at that game. It was the writing on the wall that should not have been ignored.

I was losing it at eldo taking a cricket bat to his front yard after 84
He'd still be serving the red card if Big Footy existed back then and he'd posted the proportionally equivalent melt.

Being a fan of the NSW origin team who has time and again found new ways to cough up late leads - I am never, ever comfortable with a 4-5 goal lead at any time outside of the final handful of minutes. I am still trying to figure out how we had a 30 point lead 5-6 minutes into the final term against the Bulldogs in 2019 only to lose by 19 after they kicked 8 unanswered goals.

Oh yeah I remember this giving me PTSD for a while. My old rule was if you’re 30+ up at 3qtr time, you have to do a lot wrong to cough it up

2001 Prelim was the first one that springs to mind.

2016 and 2011 prelims also.

For H&A games the one against Richmond where we were up by 50 and lost. 2003 I think it was.

The one where Hawkins kicked a goal after the siren too burned a bit.

2012 gf was the first grand final loss that I’m old enough to remember and the only GF we were in that I missed since 1991. Thankfully I was in the US watching it in Houston so it was easy to avoid the coverage after the loss so it didn’t sting as much and the three peat took the sting out of it too.

Bit of a random one but losing to the Crows in their first AFL game by nearly 100 points sucked especially then having to watch Darren Jarman run around as a Crow
I think the Richmond one was 2005 but I thought we were tanking for the PP...
Left field one is the loss to Carlton by 1 point in 2022 (partly cause wife supports carlton and was at the game). And that game made us think DGB had a future...

Has to be 2012 GF

We were just so far and away the best team in the league that year, it wasn't even close.

Sitting at the end Sydney were kicking to in the last quarter realisation hit me about 10 minutes into the last that even though we were in front that we'd lose as we were completely out of gas.

Those misses all day just bit us in the arse. Should've been 5-6 goals up by that stage and a stress free last quarter

Was sitting that end also - watching Young fall over still gives me nightmares.

Made up for it by having an absolute perfect view of the Langford freak goal however.

The 2012 GF is a strange one.
My guilty pleasure is our 3rd quarter comeback and smiths goal on the run. If you have the stomach to watch it, it’s great viewing, and bias aside it was actually an underrated grand final.

A bit of luck and we probably win that. Malceski goal in q1 (I think?) was absolutely tin ass and the lesser spoken about moment of that game. An absolute mung floater from the boundary from memory, went through the goals like a sausage

I don't think it's bias - a lot of neutrals say it's one of the greatest grand finals of all time. I generally have a mini convulsion every time I read it also.

I have 3. They are all so close.
1. 2012. Hawkins after the siren. That passage of play still haunts me.
2. 2016. Smith misses after the siren.
3. 2012 Grand final.

Today's unofficial pre-season match, for me.

Tearing up just typing this post.

We were so close, for so long...

Today’s unofficial scratch match against the cats is right up there for mine, not sure I’ll ever recover from this loss!
Great stuff guys emotional just reading that lol

A lot of mentions of the 2016 qualifying final, but it never affected me in the slightest.

Was an interesting period in time. My now wife and I had just moved in together. I'd also changed footy clubs that year and the day following the Hawks/Cats Qualifying Final I was playing in my first ever senior preliminary final. Couple that with an 8 week European trip 3 weeks later.
Hawthorn had just come off the 3-peat and I was FULL of footy success and life.

As a result, I watched Smith's kick fade right, chuckled at that nonce Harry Taylor celebrating like he had any direct impact on the result, turned off the TV and went to bed. I'd pretty much forgotten about the result until I was reminded by some of the boys the following day.

84 for me. I was a young kid and didn't really understand the concept of losing when you supported the 80's Hawks.

I've always wondered if the 84 Grand Final was played today, would we still lose? Essendon kick the first couple and we would have put men behind the ball to stop the momentum. Back then it was man on man, they started winning the ball in the middle and we didn't make any changes.

I actually am still angry about the 2016 final against the Doggies, we had them on toast, and Breust missed maybe the easiest of sitters of his career and as a collective we all dropped our heads and they overrun us.

Breust's miss was the last of our problems.
That game (read: season) was an absolute farce.

Would have been 6 goals up if he made that and I reckon that would have broken them.

84 for me. First time as a Hawk supporter, leading at 3 quarter time to be over run in the last quarter. Had to wait until 86 to experience a first grand final win as a hawks supporter.

Close second would be the 1990 elimination match against Melbourne
9 points, if we had won that match, I think we would have made the grand final, as I think the weeks break after the drawn match between Collingwood and West Coast would have suited us better.

On a game that isn’t a final, the round 16 1995 game against Brisbane. Where Brisbane came back from 45 points down at 3qtr time. It was the end of an era.

So it makes it easy for me to disregard 2011 preliminary final loss to Collingwood, the 2012 grand final loss and the 2016 loss to Geelong. As I had already been through the heart aches before.

All of the ones I was gonna say have been mentioned. My eyes will never watch 2012 GF again. Ever.

Not sure if this one has been mentioned or not, but I still remember this one (prob not the most heartbreaking but up there for mine - I dared to dream at half time):

1996 QF at the SCG - no-one thought we would win, we took it up to the swines and thought we would get them, then bloody cresswell takes that mark and kicks that goal that ended our season.
