Heavily loaded question, but what are the top three stats for a defender to be marked on? Comparing it to something like goals, score involvements and marks for a forward or disposals, contested possessions and tackles for a midfielder.

Surely, 1-1%, spoils and interecept possies are king? But that's more for key defenders, running defenders will be about rebounding and meteres gained

I dont think an individual defender can be compared to any other by only 3 stats, not all defenders do the same job

Champion Data and the All Australian committee would probably tell you it's intercept marking.

If you can combine being strong one on one and take multiple intercept marks a game then you're right at the top end.

If a defender lacks the ability to contest 1v1, their other stats just hide the problem that they will cost you goals on a regular basis.

Goals conceded to opponent anyone? Still an important stat for a defender even in these days of zones and team defenses.
In the 70's and 80's I reckon the most important defender stat might have been the punching the forward in the back of the head stat.
