Most improved

Armfield by a mile. I think with Mclean it just took getting a real chance at stringing some games together to get his confidence back.

IMO McClean and Army, in that order, but without heaps of conviction of the order.

Would probably mention Carrots as well, esp in pre-injury form.

I can't believe people are saying Carrots is most improved.
You can't improve on his level of perfection - he's been at the plateau of greatness for years now

I see your point :thumbsu: It's probably a perception thing, given how much he was lauded in the early part of the year.

Brock's improvement has been sensational, the difference has been awesome.
Armfeild has been a steady improvement. You could see him getting better everygame.

Brock McLean, more than anybody on the list, put us in with a chance of making the finals when we were down and out. That we didn't make it is a bit of a tragedy for Brock as he thoroughly deserved to play at least one this year.

Armfield emerging as a weapon going forward where he could be counted on to kick almost a goal a game (from rounds 11 to 20 he kicked 13.3) as well as a vital cog in the machine was a real delight to behold. Before the past few months he always appeared to be a bit of a wrecking ball crossed with a headless chook - always had the physical and athletic abilities to become a player but didn't always have it between the ears. The mind has slowly caught up - natural maturation.

As much as people suggest that Kreuzer hasn't improved this year I'll argue the opposite. He's become a significantly better ruck (tap work, etc.) than at any other point of his career. He is continuing his development as a strong marking target. The only thing that slowed him was the knee around the ground but we understand that he played hurt all year. In the areas where rucks are truly judged he has improved by leaps and bounds.

Early in the year I'd like to point to Hampson's improvement. He is roundly critiqued for his inability to mark yet his contested marking improved out of sight. The injury was a real shame.

Big improvers:
Armfield, Mclean, Casboult, McInness, Touhy, Watson,

Improvers
Bootsma, Carrazzo, Collins, Curnow, Hampson, Henderson, Murphy, Robinson, White, Yarran

Stayed the Same
Betts, Bower, Davies, Ellard, Joseph, Kreuzer, Laidler, Lucas, Scotland, Simpson, Waite

Gone Backwards
Duigan, Garlett, Gibbs, Jamison, Judd, Russell, Walker, Warnock

Line ball between Armfield and Brock.

Hampson has shown a little bit of improvement, but he still looks like a root vegetable alot of the time.

And on to those going backwards-

Gee, Russell has been disappointing since his 2010. Bower has done nothing for his chances at another contract, if Gibbs is going to become the elite player he has obviously has the tools to be, he needs to extract the digit. Is still prone to the average game, and some of his efforts when we were going poorly mid year were absolutely pathetic.

top 3 for mine (in no particular order)

armfield - new role in the team but improved defensive skills, improved disposal, has become quite dangerous around goal. Career high goals kicked (16.6)

mclean - most thought he was gone. Has shown that he is clearly in our best 22 (ahead of curnow/ellard). Keeps getting the ball, runs to space and dangerous around goals. Career highs for disposals/match (24.9) & contested possessions (10.9/game)

hampson - significantly improved marking and became a semi-consistent forward threat - 3rd in contested marks/game at the club (behind hampson & waite). Took 51 marks in 13 games (previous best 34 marks in 15 games in 09). Kicked 15.4 this year - previous best was 6.8 in 2010. Also career high disposals/match (9.2)

Also, rookie of year nominations

mcinness - no fuss, gets the job done - 10.8 disposals @ 79.1% efficiency, 4.5 marks, 4.4 1%s, 2.4 tackles

Casboult - power forward who did an outstanding job given his low fitness base post-knee. Has the potential to rip games apart should he ever get his kicking sorted as there is little doubt that he can mark the ball and get shots on goal - 9.0 disposals @ 57.4% efficiency, 5.2 marks/game, 2.3 contested marks/game (4th highest in league), 2.7 marks inside50/game (equal 9th in league), 7.2 HOs, 2.2 1%s, 2.0 tackles, kicked 7.12 in his 6 games

For the record, my most improved would be hampson and rookie of the year would be casboult.

Most improved should have been Gibbs & Lucas without doubt. Showed everything in the pre-season and delivered relatively little.

Most improved may have otherwise been Henderson & Laidler. Both looked primed for a very good season early on.

Most improved were 1. McLean 2. Casboult 3. Armfield

Hampson before his knee injury and we lost Waite to make him our number one target. 14 goals in 13 games as a second ruck/resting forward is similar to Hale's average this year.

Hampson had a good run in the first 5 - 6 games, quietened down somewhat and then got injured.
If he had have played on those six games at the tail end of the season we'd all have him at no. 1.
Fair to say he had improved a lot, but time has allowed me to forget him just a little. Definite improver, pity for the injury.

Mclean....then Armfield.....Daylight the next.

A lot went backwards this year, or started great (carrots) and injury crueled them.
