I don't know if this has been asked recently, so here goes.

I reckon that the most overrated player in the AFL would be Corey McKernan. It was Anthony Rocca, but McKernan is always singled out as a match winner but never performs anywhere near that standard.

What does everyone else think?

Perhaps its a fair observation from an outsider about McKernan, but his inconsistency is well known by Roo fans.
Overrated, how about Matthew Richardson. Uncoordinated *******, inconsistent, shithouse concentration, injury prone, soft, yet he's a friggen superstar. $600k per year, TURN IT UP!

A certain bloke over at Port who ONCE took 14 marks and kicked eight in a game. Yep step on up Mr.Tredrea. Whats he up to now, 60 games or therabouts? Played ONE outstanding game from memory. But how many times have i heard hes turned the corner and finally going to deliver on his ability?

Better hurry along Warren, the boats ready to sail.

It's an interesting call because many North supporters do get frustrated by McKernan. However, if you look at his performances in the 96 and 99 GF's it is a little harsh (he turned both of those matches the Roos way). He hasn't become the superstar many expected after season 96 but he still is pretty influential (as Cats fans should know too well) in the big matches (North folded in 97 when McK went down injured in the PF).

Most overrated? Tredrea and Waterhouse

Yep, McKernan sprang to my mind as well.

But a couple of West Coast candidates:

Jason Ball (until he left for Sydney) was in the top two or three highest paid of our players. He certainly wasn't in the top two or three best - he wasn't even competent.

And Josh Wooden. I know he's not rated highly, but he's easily our worst player, and yet keeps getting games. How he missed last season's culling I'll never know....

Yeah, it was against us. Typical, we allow the overrated, like McKernan play a blinder. But you must admit that was all he did for the year.

McKernan springs to mind IMMEDIATELY: I still can't believe he laid that tackle on Joel Smith in teh Semi last year when we were screaming down the wing UNFAIR UNFAIR

Tredrea: Yep I remember that game and he's been terrible ever since

Gehrig: I can't believe no ones mentioned Gehrig although he only ever plays well against us!

I'm a little surpised by the comments about Richardson. I think he is more unlucky than overated. I have seen him play some absolute blinders, but can't get on the track for long enough to prove it. Having said that, he probably isn't as damaging as he should be for the amount of marks he takes. Tends to sit and wait in the goal square for the easy one a little too often as well.

Hey, if it was possible to guarantee anyone could have a season free of injury, and put that guarantee on Richardson, I'd take him immediately, aint the best player in the league by a long shot, but he is still a very good footballer.

Easier to do a most over-rated player per team.

Adelaide :- Brett Burton
Brisbane :- Chris Johnson
Carlton :- Michael Mansfield
Collingwood :- Anthony Rocca
Essendon :- Stephen Alessio
Fremantle :- Clive Waterhouse
Geelong :- Ronnie Burns
Hawthorn :- Daniel Chick
Kangaroos :- Corey McKernan
Melbourne :- David Schwarz
Port :- Che Cockatoo-Collins
Richmond :- Wayne Campbell
St Kilda :- Fraser Gehrig
Sydney :- Jason Ball
West Coast :- Ben Cousins
West Bulldogs :- Rohan Smith

Lets see how many arguments I've managed to start, lol

Cousins overated
Asguardian has lost the plot.

Anyway yeah ill stick with the obvious McKernan sucks as does Gehrig (although is a match winner on his day) and i wouldnt give Richardson 10c to play for WC. In fact id give him 10c to stay away.!

McKernan.
Remember the name, because you certainly won't remember his game.
The most overrated, overpaid, underperformed, uncoordinated useless pile of mediocrity ever to grace a football field.

Scary stuff this, but Asguardian won't get any arguments from me on his list either, except for Cousins. I would probably put Phillip Matera ahead of him.

Thats on a per team basis. The ones with 'who rated him' in brackets, well, who did??? Fair calls on most others as they do get some media attention at least.

Cousins and Smith would both waltz into any side in the league. Finally Chick? Fair dinkum the blokes a gun, easily the best player at the Hawks last year, hardest at the contest ive seen since Kelly at his peak. 2nd 3rd 4th even 5th efforts at times, wish every player we had, had Dannys workrate. You want overated at the Hawks, look elsewhere old son. You have totally blown it here.

Cheers.

Just because a player is talented, doesn't mean they can't also be overrated. I think we've done the Cousins thing before Jod (if that was you? I dont remember, sorry), but he has the potential to be a champ, but isnt one just yet. His disposal can be a bit sloppy, and acuracy on goal is often down. Just watch a bit this season how many times he turns the ball over directly. I really hope he reaches that champ level this year though...

Yeah it was Eagle_Fan, Cousins isnt a superstar yet. He's a certifiable gun and on the verge of superstardom and as Grendel said he would waltz into any team in the country. All im saying is that he isnt overrated, he gets credit where credit is due. Thats all, but wouldnt it be great if he takes the next step this year and becomes a match winner. Wirrpunda seems destined to be a superstar so it would be great to see them both really progress this year.

Cheers
