Micheal Tuck clearly as a premiership player but Ron Barassi as combined playing, then coaching career, has everyone covered in the league history.

Whom has won the most premierships as a player without ever playing in a preliminary final ?

Not sure if anyone else has done this in league history but was amazed to hear on tv back in September Wayne Johnston say in an interview looking back on his premierships that he played in 4 premierships and never once played in a preliminary final despite all that success.
Think he might also be the only player in league history to get reported again after already under suspension. After we won the 1987 grand final he played in the infamous Battle of Britain game against North at The Oval. He was already suspended for whacking Dipper in the 87 grand final but in the October game in London after Al Clarkson king hit Aitken ,Johnston went straight after Clarkson and whacked him too to get reported and suspended again.
Always had an interesting career did the Dominator.

Has any current player matched Michael Tuck at the same stage of his career?

Tuck won his 4th at age 33 - so all of the current 7 with 4 premierships have matched Tuck as Mitchell is the oldest, also 33 in 2015 (would need to win again in 2017 to keep pace).

Obviously several Bulldogs players on 1 premiership have matched Tuck as he won his first at age 23.

Funny he never won a Brownlow though

Perhaps there was a Sydney depth element to Richmond back then where players took votes off each other

Nah, more a case of the umpires never having much clue when giving their votes.

Leigh Matthews had a heap of games where he had 30+ possessions and kicked 3+ goals and didnt get any votes. Sometimes he'd get 30+ possessions and kick 6+ goals and maybe get 1 vote.

I think he even had a game with 40+ possessions and 10+ goals and got 2 votes.

Umpires were biased back then probably also, but yeah, was astounding Lethal never won one considering how prolific he was.

If they didn't like said player, they wouldn't vote for them, Diesel Williams will tell everyone for example.

I think the week after Hird called an umpire a cheat he had 30+ possessions and kicked some goals and was easily BOG but didnt get a vote.

But anyway, Michael Tuck wins this thread.

The obvious one is the game Diesel got 40 odd possessions in and didn't poll. He sued the AFL if I remember correctly.

Is there another Cyril Rioli?

He can do alot of things but playing in premierships 5-6 years before he was born is probably beyond him.

Funny he never won a Brownlow though

Perhaps there was a Sydney depth element to Richmond back then where players took votes off each other
The Brownlow was a lot more unpredictable then, possibly having only one umpire made strange biases possible. The classic was Geoff Raines in 1980 - won best and fairest in a premiership side, favourite for the Brownlow and didn't poll a single vote! I also have a vague memory of hearing that, in one of Richmond's premiership years in the 1970s, KB was favourite but didn't win and a drunk Graeme Richmond went nuts at the ceremony.

Umpires were biased back then probably also, but yeah, was astounding Lethal never won one considering how prolific he was.

If they didn't like said player, they wouldn't vote for them, Diesel Williams will tell everyone for example.

Was called Best and Fairest for a reason. Not Best and Thuggish.
