Why lord....Why!!!! Nah, Motlop had it coming, as did 426. And with the departure of Philthy, no more cult heros...Maybe Godders to an extent.

Best of luck to them, they contributed to the club in one small way or another and will be missed...A little. Thanks boys!:thumbsu:

Is there any chance we can take 426 in the rookie draft? Or for that matter could we redraft him in either the main or pre-season drafts? Would other clubs below us in the picking order take, or even want, him?

From my understanding, there is a gentlemens agreement between clubs that if you delist a player and let it be known that you are prepared to re-draft him (so as to get around the 3 pick rule) then no else will attempt to pick the said player.

Wouldn't surprise me to see 426 in the red and blue next year.

Happy with Motlop and Nick Smith going. Motlop was a great kick but couldn't find the footy and was slower than I had hoped.

I would have kept Phil Read as a depth player. He's a good experienced player and only 26 years old (the league has gone crazy with youth policies). He was good for Sandy all year and was handy at times when he came in to the side this year(22 disposals against the pies, 17 against brisbane. on the bench half the day).

Would anyone pick him up in the draft? probably not.
I think he'd be handy for a few clubs with young midfields rebuilding there list: Carlton, Brisbane, maybe the Roos. I guess the thinking will be that he is too slow for the modern game but his toughness and experience would help a young midfield.

426 won't play at melbourne again. Fagan quoted in the paper as saying he will be squeezed out by Johnson coming back and he have better CHF's than him. No opportunity, let him go and see if he can get a start elsewhere.

No surprises really.

Will anyone else still get the chop?

Word is that they're trying to push Nicho to retire... we can only hope.

Other players out of contract that we could delist are Godfrey and Ward.

After the good seasons Ward and to a lesser extent Godfrey have had, you wouldn't think they'd get the axe. They're good second tier players that we should hold onto for a bit. Ward was good value in the second half of the season

I'd keep Ward. His complete lack of defensive pressure frustrates the hell out of me sometime but you can't have a list full of 18 year olds and he does more good than bad.

You shouldn't delist the second tier players like Ward and Godfrey otherwise you run the risk of creating a gap between the elite playing group and the developing kids. For team balance sake, it's ideal that we keep them. Not only that but they are quality players who give their all for the club.

Does anyone remember the game against Essendon in 2001 when it was our grand final 'rematch' and Wardy has gotten the ball at half back flank and handpassed it perfectly to James Hird and Hird has just bombed it from 50 off one step to score a goal and Wardy is left feeling like a muppet. You see that and his bomb from the center square the wrong way against the Tigers were bad! But he's a good player Ward, no doubt about it
