2022 looks to be quite a curious and wide open championship. Some notes and thoughts of mine:

- What condition will Marc Marquez be in next season - especially his eyes. The current description of his recovery is "adequate". Not terribly confidence inspiring.

- After 2 years of sub-par results, will Honda build a more user friendly bike for the riders of lesser ability than MM93 (ie. all of them)? If they do and Marquez gets back close to full fitness, I think he runs away with another championship.

- Similar to the beginning of 2020, a large percentage of the field are in the final year of their contract for 2022. Will we see a large shift of seats? Plenty of riders are under pressure and a couple of manufacturers as well.

- Ducati currently have an embarrassment of riches with Bastianini doing some incredible things on a 2 year old bike and Jorge Martin looking more than a little bit special. This places a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Jack Miller (who I still don't think Ducati really believe in) despite having arguably his best season. How will he stand up to that pressure and can the coaching of Casey Stoner see him take the next step?

- It was well documented that Joan Mir and Miguel Oliveira were less than 100% happy with Suzuki and KTM respectively last season. If 2022 doesn't start well, could they be headed for pastures new (Honda, Yamaha)?

- After chasing Saudi money (that appears to have turned out a con), team VR46 will be sponsored by Italian banking company Mooney.

- Can Aprilia finally join the big boys and take their first dry win and get themselves off the concessions list?

- Qualifying cutoff has been reduced from the long standing 107% of the pole lap time to 105%.

- Larger brake discs will be available, up to 355mm, particularly for high speed circuits like Red Bull Ring.

- There will be stricter crackdown on rider fitness in the event of head injury (including concussion), chest and abdominal injury and more complex fractures than simple bone breaks.

- 2022 feels like the least hyped rookie class for a while. Curious to see how they fare overall and who will come out on top.

- Gardner will still have a size and weight disadvantage to the majority of the field but hopefully the power and physicality of MotoGP levels that playing field for him. His extra size should help him muscle the bike around to some extent.

- I expect at least one podium from Joel Kelso in 2022. He only has a one year contract in his pocket with his hope of performing and progressing to a big team in 2023. He's hungry.

Marc Marquez is back on a bike.

Will apparently do a circuit test on some sort of road race bike to see how his eyes handle high speed before he's cleared to participate in the first MotoGP test at Sepang.

Marquez did his road test and all seems to have gone well. Will now almost certainly be at the Sepang test.

Casey Stoner recently took part in a very interesting, honest and revealing podcast. He covered all sorts of topics to do with his career. Here is a couple of clips:

Finally season 2022 is a go with the Sepang test underway. Results from day 1.

Quite clearly some are working through a program and not chasing times at all yet (it is called testing for a reason after all) but that is some seriously impressive pace by the Aprilias.

Day 2 is done and the test is over.

Rain came half way through the day bringing a premature end to the test.
The top twenty typically covered by 1 second.
Both Bastianini and Aleix Espargaro finished under the all time lap record.
Some of the rookies hit the track after the rain to get some wet experience. Remy parked it as his bung wrist was too sore.

A little bit of news:

- The first domino of the 2022 silly season fell with Pecco Bagnaia signing on for a further 2 years with Ducati. He joins Marc Marquez, Brad Binder and Franko Morbidelli as the only riders contracted beyond 2022.

- A lot of interest in the futures of the last two MotoGP world champs with Joan Mir pretty only scathing of Suzuki last year and Fabio Quartararo already declaring all options are open after Yamaha failed to impress with much development since last year.

- Suzuki finally have a team manager replacement for Davide Brivio in the form of former Ducati and Honda man, Livio Suppo.

- MotoGP have updated the red flag rule

Finally, the great Wayne Rainey will be riding a race bike for the first time since his Misano crash, riding a modified version of his old YZR500 at the Festival Of Speed Goodwood.

Haven’t been following testing. So not sure who’s strong and who’s not! Will feel weird watching without Vale there though lol just saying…

Some main notes from testing:

- Honda have a brand new bike that looks dramatically different and it was fast from the off.

- Quartararo was fast but typically well down on straight line speed over the rest of the field.

- Suzuki were impressive, came with more horsepower and were consistently quick.

- Aprilia look to be making a significant leap, they were extremely fast and competitive (bearing in mind it's still just testing)

- Ducati always had someone high but their factory riders were very up and down, not chasing times much instead knuckling down on testing.

- KTM looked to still be struggling somewhat with Binder the only one to really fly the flag for them.

- Gardner outpaced by Fernandez but was riding conservatively with a busted wrist.

- Raul had a crash at the Indonesian test and suffered a concussion. However, this was only discovered the next day after he ran off track on his 7th lap and he decided himself it was too dangerous as he didn't understand what happened...

- The riders really liked the Mandalika track layout but the surface - fair to say not so much. Despite it being a near brand new circuit, they are relaying half of the circuit after the surface started breaking up and spraying the following riders in a shower of stones.

- Pedro Acosta already fastest in Moto2. Fair to say the hype machine of a quick rise to MotoGP is already building.
