5 min drive to newly expanded train station and point cook town centre.

Its suburbia for sure but not everyone wants to be an arty type living in fitzroy north
Station still under construction, roads outta there gridlocked. I'm not an arty type from Fitzroy but living (sorry, residing) Point Cook & Sanctuary Lakes would drive me to heroin addiction

I moved cities quite a few times when I was young and single - Melbourne, Perth and stints in San Francisco and Rome. Returned to Melbourne, then rural Victoria before I moved down here to Launceston a few years back where I am very happy.

Williamstown is a great place to live if you can afford it - short drive or train ride into the city. If you're working there, I wouldn't bother living elsewhere, as it is better than the suburbs around it. If it is a bit pricey, you could try a nearby suburb like Newport, Seddon or Yarraville - closer to the city but not next to the water.

Well I only moved from eastern subrub to Western suburb of a city so far but it was enough to have less contact with my old friends etc. but that was back at school. I think if the job sounds good you should take the opportunity. New experiences, new mates etc. In the end you aren't out of the world- you cans till visits your folks . Even my husband manages to visits his folks every year or so, (and we live in Germany and they live in South Africa) so Go for it.

Shit still under construction? Haven't checked the house for 18 months and they'd started then...figured it'd be done by now

As many of you are probably bored of hearing, I'm moving to Melbourne next year. I'll be at uni and studying at Swinburne or, more likely, RMIT. How did you guys go about finding share houses? I know Gibbsy and another two or three mates from primary school, but aside from an uncle, that's it. Do you just look on Gumtree? Check out noticeboards at uni? I'm not too nervous and I can always stay on campus (?) for a semester... but I'm just curious.

(I want to live in an inner 'burb. Hawthorn is cool and acceptable but no further out than Northcote.)

I go to Swinburne and I have mates who live on the uni residence, which I think is in Kew.

They basically have share-houses and they are set up like small apartments, with two people to a room sharing a kitchen, bathroom and living room. I think it's pretty pricey but it is your typical university college set-up with the the actual college. Great way to make friends too etc.

And just a kilometre up the road from the Hawthorn campus (assuming that is where you'll be going).

Not too sure about RMIT but I also have mates who study there and love it. It's a nice little campus situated right in the CBD.

He's only going to Willy, so he'd be just jumping off at Kororoit Creek Rd not all the way to the West Gate.

Was seeing a chick over in Point Cook for a while and it seemed OK.

They have a big arse Dan Murphy's at the shopping centre, so that a bonus.

PS Welcome to the 21st century Smoothy ;)

I think you could do a lot worse than Point Cook if you want to live in suburbia (each to their own).

I get sick of commuting by car pretty quickly so you if you are similar (and don't want to buy two cars) you might want to position yourself close to the rail station and/or a bus that goes directly to Williamstown. Newport, Seddon, Yarraville are good for that.

Step daughter used to go to school in Williamstown. And yeah, straight off at Kororoit...10min drive

Moved to Ballarat (from the Wimmera) for my undergrad, back home for 18 months, then to Canberra for postgrad. I'm socially inept, so I've been living on campus for the past year, and don't know anyone yet, but I can see it would be a good way to meet people if you weren't a ****.

Could you speak German? And do you have a German/Euro passport?
No to German, and first time I went to Sweden/Germany I was on a visa, and second time I finally pulled my finger out and got British Passport so I could move there.

Had a German girlfriend I met when I was overseas the year before.. She came out to Aus for a few months but went back to complete her studies. I finished my Studies in October so thought 'meh' so decided to move to Europe.

Why not, hey?

I moved from New York City to Denver in January to finish up my degree, and the best advice I can give you is treat it like an adventure. I've always wondered why homesickness to football players is such an issue in Australia. Is it not common to leave your home state for university?
Certainly not as common as it seems to be in the US. I'd say the vast majority of people here go to uni in their home state.
Certainly not everyone does, and a lot of the smaller unis don't offer the possibilities of the big ones, but I would think the vast bulk do. Those who get accepted into the high demand courses of prestigious universities are more likely to move as well. And some who can't get into their local unis will go to a regional university, we had a fair proportion of those at U Tas all those years ago (Queenslanders are fun in a Launceston winter).

Pretty much the reason for 75% of English speaking foreigners  At least if you ask around at my cricket club and the pubs thats the reason number 1. and sometimes they stay here even if they split up again.
the other 25 % are work placements :D

Looks like you didnt have the interest going the permanent residency route :p

Its true, I have met so many Aussies here who 'came for a three week holiday 25 years ago' etc.

I dont see the big flap about leaving home, or home sickness. One day I went in to uni, said i wanted to go on exchange, pointed on a map, and signed the papers. I'd never thought of going on exchange previous to that morning. It didnt hit me I'd gone to Sweden till 6 months later when I had opened the door to my flat in Sweden.

Now, everyone asks me if I think I will settle in Melbourne or Berlin. Why does it have to be either? If my girlfriend said to me today 'next month lets move to US, Japan, Cameroon' or whatever, I'd just go. Why not? I mean I will still always have family in Australia, with technology its easy to keep in touch, I get to see things I wouldnt otherwise, and get to have a great time. My theory is people worry too much.
