yesterday i would've been able to say that in this WHOLE summer i have not been bitten ONCE by a mozzie which is amazing for me coz normally i am a mozzie magnet. i thought it must jsut be because it has been such an unually mild summer.
but today i went outside for like 5 minutes and got 5 mozzie bites!
has anyone else noticed the lack of mozzie sthis summer or is it just me???
 
Absolutely no lack of mozzies where I live, and they all hone in on me.

Can anyone suggest a way of preventing myself being bitten in my sleep? It's driving me nuts.
 
or you can get a mozzie net or one of those candles taht keeps them away or something like that...but nothing that smells nice...that only attracts them...

On a more serious note, mozzies hate the cold. If you can cool your room down (don't have the lights turned on etc) then this should reduce the amount in your room. The less heat, the less mozzies.
 
I'm a mozzie magnet and the only way I can get a decent nights sleep in teh summertime is to have one of those 'zapper' things plugged in and turned on all night.

They do work.

Otherwise its cover yourself in Aerogard (yuk) and hope for the best

We have our home away from home in the middle of mozzie-ville ... Runaway Bay. During summer nights ... stay 5 mins outside and you're sure to have at least 10 bites.

When i was in primary school at Merrimac, i used to come home with at least 20 bites. I guess i was used to them. Driving past the school now ... the area has been built-up and theres no sign of the swamps where these buggers used to breed.

Since i've been in Melbourne. No problems with mozzies whatsoever. :)
 
They're attracted by Vitamin B I know that much, but haven't heard of any Vitamin that actually repells them.

Mosquitos use 3 methods to home in on their prey.

1st they are attracted to the general area where Warm Blooded Mammals are by following the trail of carbon monoxide left by the mammals breathing.

2nd when they are in the vicinity of a group of people, they will select that person who has high cholesterol and perspires alot. they also like beer drinkers (I think its the VitB thing again) so thats why it always seems its the fat sweaty guy that attracts the mozzies.

3rd when they have selected thier target they will choose to bite that part of you that has arteries or big blood vessels running close to the skin. They use a heat-seeking type of eyesight for this. Thats why you always get bitten on your ankles, wrists, backs of hands, ears etc etc

hope that helps - they are as sophisticated at selecting and attacking prey as they are bloody annoying !

The other aspect is how sensitive you are to their bites.

They inject a mild anaesthetic in you when they take your blood, obviously so that you don't feel it and smack them. How much your immune system dislikes this substance is more or less how itchy you will get and therefore whether or not you will notice the bites.

god i wish... it seems i'm the only one ot EVER get bitten in my family...always the first inside at BBQ's or stinking of tat bloody RID stuf... i love summer but go di hate those damn mozzies!!!
