"Masterpiece" and "Best Ever" is a little strong for me. Too short (although I was ready for it to end), too uneven, too many vital characters done and dusted within about an episode and a half (or 35ish minutes) too many seemingly intriguing sub-plots that slammed into a wall and abruptly ended (the jail stint, Ray getting an extension on Freddie's debt "I know how to repay a favour"), too convenient for Ray or others to find people (the child traffickers, the dills who stolen the car with Ray stuck in the boot, the drug dealer...

The peak for me was when he took the job to take out the Bikie leader.

They could have drawn that out for at least 2 more episodes in my opinion.

Wow, just finished this. Had to post here. My only complaint is that it ended, but it did so really well.

Total recommendation for anyone looking for something to watch. It'll be a cult classic, it's a masterpiece, give it a shot!

You've just got to wonder how we (Australia) got this one so right, when so many others can't manage that.

Les Norton, Last King of the Cross, later seasons of Underbelly, Fat Tony etc - all wasted opportunities using worthwhile source material.

Earlier shows like Blue Murder, Pheonix etc nailed it, as did movies like The Boys, but on the whole our strike rate is pretty low.

They got it right with the early Underbelly series though. The original series was outstanding, with only a slight drop in quality for S2 (A Tale of Two t***ies) and S3 (The Golden Mile).

I agree that the quality dropped off for the later historic series (Razor, Badness, Squizzy, and Vanishing Act). I didn't even bother watching Vanishing Act.

It's a bit unfortunate that the legacy of the original Underbelly series has been undermined by recent events, showing that the coppers on Taskforce Purana were only marginally less bent than the gangsters they were investigating. The whole Lawyer X thing has really destroyed the legacy of Purana, and it's an absolute travesty that none of the senior police involved will ever be charged over it.

Yeah the first 3 series of Underbelly was some of Australia's best TV.

Mr Inbetween is right up there with it though.

Had Ray Shoesmith lived in Vic, the Underbelly series would've been over much quicker...

1st season of underbelly was pretty good at the time (doesn't hold up that well on a re-watch) but doesn't hold a candle to mr Inbetween

Oh yeah, I agree, that's why I referred to the later seasons that dropped off. The first season of Underbelly was great viewing.

Dont actually think the quality dropped that much for Underbelly over the first few seasons - if at all. Not that it was spectacular TV or anything but just S1 gets remembered as being better than it probably was
