I gotta tellya it's no co-incidence that we played our worst footy for the year when both mcguane and rancer were out of the side.

In the last fortnight coolhand Luke has played 7 brilliant quarters of footy. His first qtr on clark last week was a howler, then went on to towell him up and last night he was very good again. More confident than past seasons where we sometimes witnessed meltdowns on the last line...last night he was excellent under pressure combining well with rancer to escape from some seriously sticky situations. yes sir he is a very good defender...Mr underrated

Gotta disgree mate. Luke was putrid yesterday. Did some nice defensive things, but was an absolute shocker when the ball was in his hands.
I've been a big fan of his, but yesterday I saw nothing to suggest he has improved much.
Luke was the only player on the field yesterday who I was disappointed in.
Rance on the other hand, is a genuine improver.

They say a man has got to know his limitations. Unfortunately Luke seems to constantly forget that he isn't a skilled player like Deledio Cotchin Martin and co.

was rock solid mate, I can't think of an incident he failed us...I look at the stats 15 possies 6 marks at 80% efficiency...good numbers

I think McGuane knows his limitations. He does handball more than kick I feel and when he does kick it is long. Short kicking really lets him down.

I disagree, there was multiple times he hand passed the ball to a team mate who was under pressure. I clearly remember two that were literally 5 metres out from fremantles goal square that resulted in our players been tackled, one was very lucky not to be holding the ball.

I rate him as a player but he was average last night.

Looks like you're the only one with this opinion Bo.

McGuane is the one who needs to be replaced up back long-term. Rance is improving, Grimes is promising. I rate Astbury even though he's gone back to the 2's to work on his game. You just can't have players so uncertain with the ball in their hands in this area of the ground. It's too costly in today's modern game. Forward pressure, etc. He's always looking to handball off to put someone else under the pump. Smart teams will know this and just zone off McGuane letting him have an acre of space to turn it over and make the wrong decision. Not football smart enough (quick thinking or decision making) and not skilled enough. Lacks in both areas.

Bullshit, McGuane is easily our best FB. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. He will be overtaken soon but at the moment he is our best. McGuane>Houli who is the turnover merchant. Honestly Houli was good but if there were one weakness it was him yesterday. Time after time he would lose an easy marking contest or perform crucial kicking errors. He is a great set shot on the run though. Rance is also progressing very well and will be one of the gun FB's of the future. Now we just need Astbury, Post, and Griffiths to come on nicely and Put pressure on our players.

Actually, I think what is as obvious as night and day is our defense has been significantly enhanced with the coming of age of Grimes, Rance and Houli as been good as well.

No significant correlation can be attributed to Mcguane, no offense, who has been playing for us for years I would have thought!

I know what you mean that McGuane needs to be replaced. He does. He is undersized. Ideally we need Post and/or Astbury to replace him. However at the moment for our sides structure there is nobody better than him yet. He is still our best defender in one on one situations. There is nobody at the moment pushing for his spot so we remain undersized for the time being. We also need one of Griffiths/Post to replace Miller ideally too. No means is this a hit on Miller as he is doing his job but ideally we want those two youngsters to outperform him and become regulars for our long-term success.

I can think of three in the 2nd quarter alone where he had the ball and could not think what to do. Instead he held onto the ball too long and it got turned over. Thank god for Rance and Grimes last night. Luke should be buying them a slab each this week for getting his arse out of jail.

Houli was good, they put him on ballantyne when he started looking dangerous and he managed to shut him down, he also went onto Luke Power in the last quarter last week and shut him down. Good to see that he can play a defensive role but also hurt the team going the other way.

More Crap. Houli was on power all night and go towled up. He only corrected it in the end. I'm sick of everyone praising him like he is the best in our team. He is far off it and is at the bottom of the pecking order of our midfielders. If you actually watch his decision-making and crucial errors you will see what I mean.

Mate you are the one talking crap. Houli was great and is getting better. Has great disposal and very creative by hand, runs hard and is pretty good defensively.

I like mcquane but is he good enough? He needs to improve his disposal skills.he makes me nervous wen hes got the ball.

Absolute rubbish. Houli's last three weeks have shown why he was recruited here.

Agree with this.

I think Houli has been a great addition to our line up - his work rate is first class and his disposal has been very good and also chiming in with goals now aswell.

SG- To make statements like "He is a great set shot on the run though" , clearly demonstrates "No Idea"

Back on topic though - I think McGuane is ok but not good at the moment. I have thought previously that he has upside, but at the moment not sure he is making the progress we require, particularly with others stepping up to the plate

So because I state a player is a good set shot on the run but has an ability to have big brain fades makes me have no idea. I bet you wouldn't even notice the little things that makes someone a good footballer. For instance Houli is on the run, there are two players either side of him that are open and there is a contest in the forward line 2 on 1 Riewoldt. What does he do yesterday? instead of continuing to run and draw a defender he kicks it to the 2 on 1, gets turned over, Freo Goal. His turnovers are dangerous turnovers.

I'm not saying he is a shit player, he is playing pretty good, but he is one of our weaker players as far as I am concerned. Another example is when the ball was rebounding out of defence on two occassions 1) where he should marked it, and 2) where it was a 2 on 1 and could of spoiled the ball given the situation. Both times he ****ed it up and it was a Freo goal. There were also various one on one contests at ground level where he loses the ball. I'm not saying he is bad but he is no champion.

People bag Mcguane but he gets the ball when under more pressure than anyone else... he is on the last line. Of course he is going to make more errors then a player who gets it in space with minimal pressure on him.

Another example is against Brisbane. He gets torn a new arseh*le by Luke Power all game. He needs to work on defensive aspects of his game. His errors resulted in 3-4 quick Brisbane goals, they are deadly.

I don't think people get what I am on about. He is playing good.... as is all our whole team right now. But i'm not a fan of players getting hammered like Edwards and McGuane, while players like Houli get all praise because they neglect defensive sides of their game and rack up possessions.
