I’d say he was generally average. Got involved, but didn’t use the ball to his best capabilities

He’s not that far off the pace, but Nank/Hinge/Laird/Cumming etc should be ahead of him right now
He definitely wasn’t horrible but he also wasn’t ‘good’

Nank was one of our best on the night and looked good in that 3rd period when the heat was still in the game , clearly deserves a start this week to lock in a spot

Let’s say Max is available round 1 ( I have my doubts and would prob be cautious with him ) what you think happens at selection ?

I’d prob leave Sholl out , pick Nank in front of milera

Cumming comes onto that wing and Dowling out , Chayce starts on other wing

Rankine for who ? Does Draper debut as the sub ? Horrible way to debut but it makes sense in some ways

Pretty sure they’re keen to pick Curtin , actually really loved what VB said about him

If max is out I’d play Bond to take higgins again , who is very dangerous
Michalanney/Bond, Murray, Worrell
Hinge, Keane, Laird
Jones, Peatling, Dawson
Rachele, Fogarty, ANB
Keays, Thilthorpe, Walker
ROB, Soligo, Rankine
Crouch, Draper, Cumming, Curtin
Nankervis

That’s what I’d do. Dowling unlucky

Sholl looks unlikely this weekend so I can't see him playing R1 really. Nank in for Milera unless Wayne shoots the lights out next weekend.

Cumming starts as sub, big call for our off season recruit but I get the feeling they want to manage him a lot through the season. What it also does is enables us to bring a tall off at either end late in the game and bring in a lot of run.

Rankine comes in for Dowling, pushes Soligo out to a wing to start but he'll come into CB like we saw

Agree, not sure why he hasn’t been considered first choice in the first place, given he played most of last season

Did you stop reading prior to the, "none are being pushed out by players in the B side" bit? It represents exactly 50% of the words used in the the post, it's not like it was hidden amongst paragraph after paragraph.
Thank you Sir, I'll do better next time.

Wow hadn’t thought of this but could be handy occasionally
Yeah someone mentioned it to me yesterday and I thought the same as you

The only issue is needing an impact player

I know there are no easy games but some opponents we should beat so to aid Tex getting to 300 we could have him start as sub as a form of resting

Yep fair call re Cumming

Semantics.... lol.

I think personally it's hard to judge the B grade guys. They played 3 quarters of a game against last year's wooden spoon SANFL side who appear to have even LESS depth.

The only thing that's clear is Nank was well above that, but we knew that already.

It's not semantics, it's the literal statement being made in the post. I did not say the 22 was settled, I stated that players in the B side will not take the spot of a player in the A side. These are different statements. With 3 or 4 injured players to come into the 22 it makes it even more unlikely that a player from the B side unseats someone.

So you, “beg to differ”, which player from the B team do you see replacing in the A team?

Have no doubt Dawson spends some time on wing but I want my skipper in the first centre bounce most weeks and especially round 1 2025

I’d prob start with Dawson Rankine Soligo but Obvs Peatling a huge chance too

Cumming as sub is an interesting call, I think how we use him against the Lions will be a decent indicator of whether that could happen or not (ie if he only plays, say, the first half)

Just going off what the first CB trio was in the praccy - Crouch, Soligo, Peatling. I think Rankine would replace Crouch or maybe Peatling

Would be happy with any combination of Daws/Ranks/JP/Crouch/Soli as the starting trio, though

I’d pick Nank ahead of Milera every day of the week. But can you really see him losing his spot this late into preseason? Would have been nice if they did a quarter and a half in each game so their performances could better be compared. Whoever starts against Brisbane is in, unless injury, Max gets up or someone like Tex is rested. Sholl I think won’t play round 1.

Anyone mentions Murphy's performance.
Someone needs to tell him to slow down. He was running around ball chasing with little effect. I doubt he is any better than an average SANFL player atm.

Smith had some good moments. His kicking was better, more like the old Smith.

You think Nank is any chance of starting this week and playing round 1 ? I hope so

I’m thinking Sholl has missed too much and won’t play and agree on max it’s 50/50 and I’d err on side of caution and play Bond

I think Chayce is ahead of Dowling for wing and cumming plays other wing

Draper is interesting

I think it’s highly unlikely that Nank unseats Milera. Or any player from the second game unseats a player from the first. Our preseason strategy is more about building continuity and connection and less about working out who’s best 22. Milera has a best 22 badge, Nank doesn’t yet. He needs injury or lots of poor form from a best 22 player or a bad game or 2 from a fringe type. But if Max gets up, the back 7 are all rolled gold badged best 22s. And that’s based on Cumming (or Hinge) playing wing, otherwise it’s 8.

OK you're doing the whole "holier than thou" thing.

Have a good day.

Peatling will play R1, as will Crouch.

Cumming is interesting, being managed for a 3 quarter scratch match isn’t a great sign. I’m guessing they didn’t want him backing up 5 days later. I’d prefer Milera replaced by Nank, I just don’t see them doing it.

I’m hoping it was that clear that Nank gets first shot this week

But also think they’ll be wanting to give milera as much exposure as possible , maybe they should both play half back this week as good comparison

Yep I reckon cumming has done 5 hammies inc tendons in last 12 months so the call to have him start round 1 sub is definitely a possibility

The last thing we should be doing, especially in a finals push year, is considering a strategy that is designed to have a player reach a milestone. I can see merit in Tex coming on fresh in the 3rd, but it won’t be much use if our midfield is being beaten. I think the rule of thumb is there for a reason. Subs are generally utility types or mids, very, very rarely are the anything else.

Interesting to know what Burgo is doing to remedy this becoming a major issue for us. Cumming is too important to us to be out injured.
