That’s incorrect. He’s contracted next year.

Bigfooty clearly doesn’t like him, it didn’t like Maxwell, Toovey or Leigh Brown in 2008-2009 either. That didn’t mean those three weren’t good enough to play in a premiership.

doesn't like is strong language..... despise is probably more accurate.

You can question his form at times or the impact of his possessions no doubt but you can never question is willingness to put his body on the line for the Collingwood Football Club.

If every player who pulled on the Collingwood jumper gave as much these past 2 years we'd be heading towards our third straight flag.

At the very least you have to respect the guy for giving his all during his time at the club and never forget that in his prime at Fremantle he was far from the unskilled sloth some would have you believe.

You don't fluke 228 games of AFL football.

There's no questioning his courage. There have been a few games this year when I've been ready to write him off, and then he'll throw himself at a smother or go back and take a courageous mark, and it makes you thankful he was there when we needed it.

The last few weeks, I feel like it's taken getting himself knocked out to have an influence. That's obviously not a sustainable way of playing long term. But it's set a standard for his team-mates no doubt.

Personally, I would have been dropping him anyway for Greenwood, who possesses similar attack on the ball but is just a far more dangerous player.

Despite the criticism, I think he has been a more than serviceable player for the club,

the unskilled sloth.

he's a very brave unskilled sloth. I cant think of a braver unskilled sloth... maybe they should add it to the best and fairest... rupert could qualify... jack madgen... mayne would win of course.

I don't think there's any other Collingwood player from the recent era who has grown on me as much as him. He's reinvented himself and has been getting pretty much the best out of himself for the past couple of years. Will be a shame if the rest of his season is a write off, but he'll be back and will get close to that 250 game mark which isn't too bad at all.

You're likely correct, our sentimentality for players who get hurt onfield has become a hallmark of our culture. For better or worse.

I just don't see why it's such a certainty that he walks right back into our best 22, regardless of the manner in which he went down. If we're playing blokes because they got hurt bravely rather than what they actually do on the field and on the track we have completely and utterly lost the plot. All the guys that return from injury have had to jump through serious hoops playing lots of reserve footy, whether that's Greenwood, Shaz, Broomhead or Langdon. Mayne should have to do the same, given he's one of our worse performers.

Given full health, who in this side does he supplant RD.1 next year:

FB: Maynard - Roughead - Howe
HB: Quaynor - Moore - Crisp
C: Sidebottom - Adams - Daicos
HF: Elliott - Cox - Mihocek
FF: Stephenson - De Goey - Kelly
FOL: Grundy - Pendlebury - Treloar
INT: Sier - Thomas - Greenwood - Noble

With Langdon, the Brown brothers, Murphy, Hoskin-Elliott, Bianco, Rantall and our upcoming NGA prospect McInnes (alongside a likely 1st round draft pick) all on the fringes alongside Mayne.

In what world is he a walk on in that team? If he can pip those guys based on sentimentality then we've truly shat the bed

That’s all pretty subjective though isn’t it. Our opinions color our views, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to align with what the selectors believe. You think it’ll be a sentimental call, they think they name the best available 22 to win the game.

IMO CFC should not let Mayne back out on the park again, there's a huge possibility he will get hurt. It's time, Mayne doesn't know it yet or simply won't acknowledge it.

Players come back from facial fractures all the time. Why is it so much more a risk for Mayne? Are you referring more to the concussion? Does he have any history of concussion?

Would be doing the club a favor if he called time on his career, it was a mistake extending his contract another year so early in the season. Will be making up the numbers next year if retained.
Should tell him he will more than likely be playing 2s but use him as an assistant coach and get rid of Harvey and Sanderson.

I don't question his guts or his internal regard.

But his slow, careful, backwards play and lack of explosiveness/inability to kick the ball over 40 metres, is not and has not been the way forward for a while.

Worst 200 gamer in the history of the league. Harsh but true. Offers absolutely nothing as an on field leader - makes awful decisions, sells his teammates into trouble with every disposal, refuses to take the game on whatsoever. 230 odd games and has absolutely zero football IQ to show for it. 20 game Irish imports are smarter.

Big heart, great bloke but the backward hospital handpass to Madge make me vomit up a mouthful of stomach acid. Agree with those suggesting he calls time or part of the coaching staff, although I don’t immediately see what he could bring to the table.

Hopefully he's not best 22 next year, but I'm glad they've re-signed him. Like Levi, at worst he's solid depth who is also a fantastic role model to have in the footy club.

I really admire the way he re-invented himself after looking gone and no one can fault his effort or courage but he should be a player we are looking to upgrade.

His big fault is that he holds the ball up when he takes a mark/gets a free. He then either chips sideways or back, it really slows the game down and as we saw v WC, when we go fast we are far more threatening. He is not a link or line breaking player and we need that through the middle. I know I will get screamed down but we really need someone like Stevo to step up into that midfield wing type role. Leg speed, skills and ability to break lines.
