The best player in the draft.
The best tall in the draft.
Possibly the best key defender available.
Promising bottom age player.

Top work Blueboys!!!

Here's the dirt on Edwards, courtesy of footydraft who had him in the 50s.

Jake Edwards
Details:
Club: Melton/Western Jets
DOB: 6 January 1988 Hgt: 191cm Wgt: 78kg
Position: Forward/Defender
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
Vic Metro U16 in 2004
2005 Victorian State Screening

Statistics:
2004 TAC Cup: 5 games, 1 goal, avg 10.4 PPG, 3 times in the best
2005 TAC Cup: 18 games, 13 goals, 13.8 PPG

Background:
Still bottom age, but he has had a very good season. Having played for Vic Metro U16s in 2004 and squeezing in five Jets matches as a 16 year old, Edwards has performed consistently well as a bottom age player this season for the Jets. He probably doesn’t have the hype of other key position players in this draft, but has enough good qualities to suggest he’s draft material. He is capable of taking strong marks overhead, and has performed well in defence and up forward this season. Is the son of Alan ‘Butch’ Edwards who played for Richmond and Collingwood.

Strengths:
- Strong overhead
- Vertical Leap
- Can play either end
- Height
- Decent speed/mobility for his height

Weaknesses:
- Set shot kicking is inconsistent, needs work

Footydraft comment: Looks a promising type and is definitely worthy of being selected in this draft. He is versatile and can play at either end. At 191cm (and possibly has grown further), with an excellent vertical leap and a strong pair of hands, he looks as though he could have a bright future. In what is deemed a weak draft, I rate him as someone who would be worthy of a pick around 30, although clubs may tend to wait and take a punt with a later pick.

Rapt with Murphy and Bower, was really hoping we nabbed Bower. Still not convinced on Kennedy, but will reserve my judgment, surprised we would pass on Swallow at 36, i will be really peeved if he turns out to be a gun, although he was only ever hyped on these boards...obviously most recruiters didn't share that opinion.

Good job, can't be too unhappy with that :thumbsu:

Nice going by the Blues. Burgatron thought the Blues were angling for Kennedy and using Dowler as a ruse. Collingwood's paranoia in keeping Thomas away from the Hawks meant that Ellis was left on the shelf for the Hawks and we did not have to change our plan.

Bower is a good get. 3 KPP's and the best player = pretty successful draft for the Blues. All 3 can play back though Kennedy is a better forward and Edwards can play forward as well. Key position versatility in 3 or 4 years is the ultimate aim.

Obviously nobody rated Austin Lucy as he played in the secondary carnival. I thought the Bombers might look at him late as Fletcher is not getting any longer. I guess he can't really play anywhere else so his attractiveness wasn't as great as others.

Who is left in the rookie draft?

Would be good if we could rookie list McEntee
According to Burgan and footydraft also (looking at who wasn't taken), McEntee could be the pick of who wasn't taken.

Would we rookie a ruckman though?

McEntee or Ryan Jackson should be pick 1 in the rookie draft. I would hope for Dzufer but think he is bottom aged so can't be picked up I don't think.

IMO, you could throw Tim Looby and Alan Toovey into that mix as well.

We already have two potential ruckmen on the rookie list (Daniel Batson & Aisake O'Hailpin), I'm not sure we need another one.

Due to the time it takes for a ruckman to develop, there seems to be trend developing of picking up ruckmen on rookie lists and seeing how they go for two years. They seem to slip every draft. I think he will be given a look on a rookie list and be one of the fancied picks in the pre-season draft.. I hope we get him.

Despite the fact they were overlooked, I think this years rookie draft will have a few good'nes come through, there are fewer question marks on a few who slipped through this year.

Seems an absolute monty to me we should take Todd Grima. Played all his junior footy as a defender and had fantastic success as a forward this year. I rated him top 25.

Sam Iles is another Tassie boy who would be a very handy rookie player.

Add Alan Obst to the good quality players left that have already been mentioned by people.
-----------

Really happy with this draft. I might have taken Lucy at 36 instead of Edwards, but I think Carlton have been set of Edwards at 36 for a long time. Lucy's questionable pace on the first few steps was likely a drawback.

Best Centre Half Forward, Best Centre Half Back, Best Midfielder and a mobile tall switch player (And one of the best bottom age players in the draft) ... congratulations Carlton.
