Murphy is ahead at this point. Was injured last year and was still fantastic and the year before didn't do a preseason. 2010 he kicked 30 goals from the midfield.

Murphy is more of a team player and would never buck a team tradition for selfish reasons like cotchin did with his first act as captain.

Cotchin gets way more attention as Richmond hasn't got much else to be excited about.

That being said Murphy would be around the 10-12 best player in the comp with cotchin around the 16-17 mark IMO.

That is just marks, primarily made up of uncontested marks, which just shows that Murphy plays a more outside game. What we have been talking about is contested marking ability, which Cotchin has beaten Murphy in, every year for as far back as footywire has recorded.

i don't buy it much either. i'm just using it as a counter-argument to the notion that cotchin is so obviously the better forward option.

in the scheme of things, who cares? cotchin might well be the better ruckman too.

In so far that he is taller so has more opportunity to mark. I don't particularly see him as having stronger hands, just the reach over smaller midfielders. Certainly has a longer frame so to speak.

It has been so close the whole time that as I've said already, maybe I'm not giving murphy the credit he deserves. I do however stand by my opinion that Cotch is and will be the better player.

Yep I honestly thought Cotch would win easily but many neutral posters chose murph and the non troll ones made some good points.

You say that like having outside game is a bad thing. Murphy does have a good inside game, but he's also got a very damaging outside game. I wish Cotchin had an outside game like Murphy's because he'd shred teams, but as evidenced by the marks stat, Cotchin doesn't get enough ball in space to do so.

Cotchin gets the best defensive mid every single week, Murphy gets the best defensive mid less than 50% of weeks, so its pretty hard to judge the 2.. Id say Cotchin because he has coped with being tagged every week better than Murphy did at the same stage of their careers

I hate to do this, but I am not sure that's correct. Prior to Judd, Murphy was the main mid and tagged most weeks I believe, whilst playing to a very high level. Would be extremely happy to be corrected though.
