Murphy defended with similar tenacity to that shown by Mollyfud in his marathon defence of his favourite earlier in this thread. Good effort by both.
In the end however, we still lost a game we should have won.

The only reason Molly's not here right now is that he's out of the country. I am sure he'd be the first to be calling for the haters. I agree with the previous posters. Haters beware... the mantra must be: we support our team, through thick and thin... they are not a collection of individuals, it is a team game.

I wouldn't mind betting that most of the haters are more into SuperCoach than football. They would probably rate Joel Bowden ahead of Stephen Silvangni.

Haters are gonna hate...

(Safe in US ( no way I am staying in the country again with Pies in the Granny))

Very good game (AGAIN) from Murph. Assuming no injury or dreastic loss of form, it is going to take a change in structure/very very good player to take his spot.

Agreed. He was fantastic in the prelim and look forward to seeing him prove the haters wrong next year as well.

Sadly they'll just be quiet until he has one bad game or disposal and then they'll be back though.

I can't actually see what everyone's problem with Murphy is. He's no star, but he's far from a dud. I've seen some ridiculous things on here before about him. Patently ridiculous statements like he's the worst player in the comp.

I'm very much on the side of the discussion that believe he was pretty good this season.

ok, murph is a solid player that and nullify a small/medium forwards (milne, betts, stevie J), but for us to the best side, he unfortunately can't be in our best 22. For his size and position he needs to be a threat on the rebound to the opposition. That is able to run (heath shaw, harry o, birchall, mackie and scarlett type) or have a good penetrating kick (gue, josh hunt and davis type). Our best defense can only carry 1 totally negating player, and most likely with a KBP player (shoey).

So isn't the answer to remove Shoey and replace him with the man with one of the best Disposal effectiveness over the last 3 years in the league in Gilham? Plus I don't think if both are in the side it is such an issue as both use it well enough! Shoey probably turns it over more the Murph but he can become attacking. For a player of under 21 and under 33 games, he is coming along nicely I would have thought. Would love him to have an injury free preseason!

Sorry mollyfud, you didn't quite understand. From the backline now, you need more player that can beat zone defenses. So our best defense would be served by gue, burger, birchall and gibson to play on small/medium forwards, and be good with rebound out of the 50 and deliver inside to forward 50. That leave gilham, stratton to play on the big forwards. Therefore, leaving shoey, murph and cheney as back ups. The problem with Murph, unfortunately is he can't turn around a zone defense. They can hold their position, and that stop quick movement of the ball thru the middle, to get to the forward line (and that is the whole reason of the zone defense).

All those 4 you mentioned played down back this year! No use creating half a goal a game extra on offense and giving away 1+ on defense from dropping you best defender against the small players! Just doesn't make sense!

ok mullyfud, i give this 1 last go, but given you one-eyedness i'm not sure you will ever understand. With the modern forward press ( zone press) small/medium backs has to be able to defend and also be an attacking player. So if you are to replace my selection of gue, burger, birchall and gibson with murph, who do you have in mind? Bear in mind, birchall (rebound 50 runs)and gibson (great 3rd man up) (both almost all-australians), and burger (great all round player), and gue (good kick and needed for kick-in).

With all due respect I have to disagree, not all 6 defenders need to be able to do this, a defensive unit has to be balanced and have the right combination of defenders. Clearly the coaching panel and much of the foortball world would have Murphy clearly in our best 6 defenders

sorry goldnbrown, what i believe our best backs are: gue, burger, gibson, birchall, stratton and gilham. unfortunately, we've had to play a back 7 for most of the year (therefore includes murph, suckling or cheney). Truely, to be great team, would it not be better not to rely on having a loose man back all the time. We get exposed on pure center clearances.

He had a great season.

That being said, I still believe that he has limitations in his game that will ultimately see him surpassed by others.

Hawker, I belive that we play a lose man in defence no matter what , the aim is to free up a man, not to cover weaknesses
