My understanding is that Tom Murphy is a defence captain, just like Roughy used to be the captain of the forwards. Probably another concept Clarko borrowed from NFL (they have captains for offence, defence and special teams). This will explain why, as one poster earlier in the thread so derisively stated, Murphy spends a great deal of time pointing fingers - he's doing the job he's being asked to do.

I humbly suggest to those supporters who don't like Murphy being in our team - get used to it - he'll play his 100th game for Hawthorn next year.
 
I find it so funny that so many posters ignore the stats when they don't fit the story. Tom's disposal % is up there with the best of them

I was thinking about that when it was originally posted (but honestly couldn't be bothered with this shit again) - we get down on our knees and worship Hodgey as the "General' because he was so good in marshalling the troops into position as the situation required, but when Murphy, a lesser player, does the same role - he is ridiculed as some epileptic pygmy with delusions of grandeur.

FFS - the job still has to be done by someone - perhaps we drag Hodge back to defence and everyone will be happy? It really is biting off your nose to spite your face around here from time to time.

Good luck tonight to Murph - winning your position will go a long way to getting us across the line. Everyone has to agree with that........

MF I couldn't agree more. You would think something could be settled with 200 and something posts. It's becoming distasteful. No, I'm not saying you shouldn't have an opinion. It's just that this thread is becoming embarrassing IN MY VIEW.
 
Was terrific tonight.
 
Tom Murphy played a superb game tonight against Collingwood. He kept us in the game with his marking, spoiling and clean disposal. It was such a complete, confident and flawless game.

He started off with the first two intercepting marks and made sure the Magpies couldn't establish any momentum at the start of the game. He continually performed at a high level throughout the game and was easily one of our best players in the most intense game we have played in the last 3 years.

He is not just part of the club's depth. He is a key to the side's makeup.
 
A lot people owe him an apology and it's an example of the coaching staff sticking with guys that can do a job.

He was superb and I'm HAPPY to say he proved a lot people wrong. The leader in him was on show tonight.

(Of course, many will still say, "Oh, it was just one game..."):rolleyes:
 
Thomas Murphy take a bow! I have backed you the last few years and you are paying dividends! Thanks for your defensive efforts and I look forward to 2012!
 
Great Game Thomas Murphy...played your role very well tonite....I must admit...when you first started as a Hawk...I thought u weren't gonna make it...and u were the player that was easy to blame for a LOSS...but you've improved in leap and bounds the last few years to become a solid defender...some big scalps during the year....Keep up the good work..fingers crossed for another solid year in 2012...:D

Murphy is the player we should think of when we watch Schoey. If we are patient then Schoey will come right too. Great game tonight Tom Murphy!!!
 
One of our best last night. Never gets a bag kicked on him.

He's come such a long way, says a lot about his character and why he is so highly regarded within the club.
 
The thing that really impressed me about Murphy was that when it was his turn to go as a third man up, he didn't hesitate he just went straight at the ball...the confidence oozing out of him tonight was something i thought i would never see....... Best game of his career.
 
A lot of blokes have egg on their face here on tonight's effort - be good if you manned up and showed some respect.
 
Murphy gets way too much focus. He is a good average back flanker and floating defender. he definitely deserves a spot on the list. The occasional brain fade is pretty common for these sort of players in any team. The way he gets attacked on these boards is really illogical. He played terrifically tonight and hopefully he takes that attitude and focus into '12.
