Watching the replay.. And call me a hater but I seriously don't understand what he brings to the team accept "leadership". Yes it's about structures but he doesn't offer any rebound or punch or take marks?

I think he will be dropped this week as theres not really a match up for him vs the pies and we will go with an extra runner in the midfield. Stratton will retain his spot and play on one of the talls with Gibbo playing as the 3rd man up.

Mods: Really? We don't already have a drop Murphy post already? I truly think he deserves his own board so there is a place I can totally ignore this drivel!
Probably why you aren't playing with him or coaching him really!I have tried to stay out of all the Murphy postings as he prob reads this but Friday night was disastrous for him.
Slipped over, and went to ground too often and also set another player up with a poor high floating handball.
He points his fingers around like he is a seasoned pro. If I was playing with him I would say Thomas concentrate on getting a kick and taking the odd mark mate and stop pointing and directing.
I really think once the coaching group watch the replay he may well be in strife this week for his spot which will be difficult becasue they left him out in 08.

Like Murph, but his disposal on Friday night was poor...it was obvious and all the other Hawthorn supporters next to me thought the same...not bagging the bloke but just stating a fact...
Who did Murphy play on??
This is not the point, Cheney in my view after the last few weeks is a far better option...is better at the contest, can spoil the ball beautifully, is better at ground level and is a 'ranga'...and we are short of our ranga obligations since Rough was injured..
Not knocking Murphy, by but in terms of structure we would look much better with Lisle instead.
Shoey & Lisle - 195+
Gibbo & Stratts - 190cm
Goo & Poppy - <189cm
Much better than having 3x 190cm. PLUS lisle is much much better at reading the ball in the air than Murphy. God knows he was really good last time we played Collingwood.
This would be ideal, as Gibbo would play on the opposition's 3rd tall, which will allow him to come over the top for all the high balls (like he did against Sydney) instead of having to stand a player who is too tall for him.
Thinking mainly in terms of team structures.Murphy is an excellent reader of the ball! Is arguably best help defender if needed and isn't on the most dangerous forward (which he has been off late, apart from the Swans). Also is good against the rest midfielders. Will most likely get Swan when he plays forward.
I notice you didn't compare Murphy's DE against the other defenders in the side...
Stratton 100%, 0 clg, 5 spoils, 5 marks (sidenote: how good a defender is Stratts)
Birchall 83%, 2 clg, 1 spoil, 9 marks
Guerra 82%, 1 clg, 3 spoils, 2 marks
Schoenmakers 80%, 2 clg, 7 spoils, 3 marks
Gibson 70%, 2clg, 21 spoils (...wow), 8 marks
Murphy 55% (3rd lowest in the team), 2 clg, 1 spoil, 3 marks
He -can- stop a mid sized forward, great... but so can other defenders, and they can do MORE at the same time. Murphy also has the curse of having his clangers frequently result in devastating turnovers. So his DE is appalling for a defender, he killed bugger all contests and got bugger all marks and made 2 turnovers to boot.
Is doing just enough good enough? Personally I would have liked to see Cheney get more time, but unfortunately I think it's too late to bring another small-mid sized defender in. Lisle could be good, probably about as fast as Tom (who doesn't move fast at all), and can take a mark. Tough times ahead.
But I don't think Murphy's performances warrant the protection he seems to get, I do admit some people are pretty crude about it, and there is no place for that, however, I think it's fine to question his validity in the team over other defenders.
