OK I'll answer my own question, Murphy played on Rowan & Spangher a little bit the two had a combined 12 possessions for the game....

Any of you who think that Murphy's role is to rack up possessions and provide rebound really need to question your knowledge of our setup. Murphy still has the ability to muff the odd kick and that is why generally speaking he doesn't take much on.

Murph is a shut down defender and doesn't get anywhere near enough kudos for his roles on Betts, Milne, etc etc.

Tom's game lifted a cog last year, and it needed to. This year he has been ok. He really must do a lot of team orientated things that the coaches like which seem to outweigh his many glaring errors.

Jordan Lewis is very lucky not to be still unconscious in hospital after being on the receiving end of a signature Murphy pass on Friday night. It could easily have been another Harbrow incident but for Jude Bolton (I think) not smashing him into next week, and he very well could have if he wanted to.

Perhaps his game stands out a lot being surrounded by all the efficient left footers, but by golly I worry whenever he has the ball.

This is not the point, Cheney in my view after the last few weeks is a far better option...is better at the contest, can spoil the ball beautifully, is better at ground level and is a 'ranga'...and we are short of our ranga obligations since Rough was injured..

Not knocking Murphy, but in terms of structure we would look much better with Lisle instead.

Shoey & Lisle - 195+
Gibbo & Stratts - 190cm
Goo & Poppy - <189cm

Much better than having 3x 190cm. PLUS lisle is much much better at reading the ball in the air than Murphy. God knows he was really good last time we played Collingwood.

This would be ideal, as Gibbo would play on the opposition's 3rd tall, which will allow him to come over the top for all the high balls (like he did against Sydney) instead of having to stand a player who is too tall for him.

If the coaching staff were interested in this setup it would be M Suckling who would miss out. We can use Birchall and Guerra for kicking out.

I remember pointing out in the Blues game thread that the 3 "cyritical errors that caused goals" that someone pointed out was really 1 but they said it didn't matter! Its hatery pure and simple and the sooner you all get over it the better. They guy is in the best defense we have, get over it!


Your argument doesnt stand up boss. Murph kicks the ball backwards or sideways to a stationary player 98% of the time basically making his kick the easiest kick in league football.

Thomas makes clanger after clanger every week. He needs to stop pointing and directing others and worry about doing the very basics.

His hospital handball to Lewis through the middle the other night had st Vincents written all over it.

His spoiling of the ball at times is horrendous. He jumps into packs often as the third man up and misses the ball leaving his opponent dangerous and often goal side.

Your support as a Hawthorn person is great for Thomas however you need to watch the games more closely.

So his was the only hospital ball of the year? I seem to remember times when Murphy gets death balls, tries to get it out and then is crucified for turning it over.

And I do watch the game closely just without drinking the hateraid first! You ever think the game might be more enjoyable if you treat all the.players equally instead of sweating hoping that TM makes.a mistake to justify your hating on him? I sit in the stands, I hear the people get on him when he makes one mistake after others have made multiple! Makes me sick!

Does Sean Dempster cop the same at St Kilda, not a great rebounder, doesn't have flash disposal. But like Murphy does the job shutting down dangerous opposition forwards week after week.

The fact that you have included SCA worries me greatly. However this does show that Murphy's opponents above Milne, Betts & SJ have not really hit the scoreboard... These guys all average 2.0 to 2.5 goals per game... in 4 games against 3 of the games most dangerous they have kicked 1 goal on the Murph...

Anyone care to explain how this dud can accomplish this when other "gun" defenders have failed?

No doubt he is good at locking down opposition forwards when he gets the right match up. If he could get rid of the part of his game where he coughs up the ball for the easy turnover goal and the hospital passes nobody would be complaining, and he'd probably never be in danger of losing his spot in the side. BTW, I wouldn't look at goals conceeded on their own. Scoring shots is a much better guage of how he is limiting his opponent.

Otherwise, you having to include how effective his antics on the mark are effecting the result on goal.

SJ destroyed him. If we play Geelong again, either he doesn't play or he needs another matchup.

My only criticism with Murphy this year is that he concentrates on his opponent so much, that he has opportunites to spoil which he misses. But it is never HIS man.
