what is the best Deep Purple? (prefer 1970s concert)

I've got odd tastes when it comes to Deep Purple.

I prefer the MK III line up with Blackmore, Coverdale, Paice, Lord and Hughes, so I will always recommend the California Jam CD or DVD which was recorded in April 1974 on the Burn album tour. Brilliant performance, probably my favourite live video by ANY band.

If you're a MK II fan with Gillan and Glover in, I'd say Concerto For Group And Orchestra from 1969, which once again is against the norm of most people.

The Special Edition EP DVD I had in my list is very short, only about half an hour of footage, but at about $15 is a decent buy.

For a full length MK II gig, choices are surprisingly limited. Scandinavian Nights from March 1972 isn't bad, but it's black and white and the 100 minutes only contains 9 songs.

The notes on the back of my VHS case say "Recorded by Danish TV but never screened, it would seem to be the only Mk 2 concert ever filmed in its entirety."

So there you go, maybe not that much choice...

Come Hell Or High Water from November 1993 also features the re-reformed MK II line-up and isn't a bad performance, although it's the gig that caused Blackmore to leave for the last time. During Blackmore's solo on Highway Star, Gillan is up the front banging on the bongos like an idiot, to which Blackmore responds by throwing a glass of water at him. The gig went on unaffected, but Blackmore left the band a couple of weeks later and that was his last gig with them.

Another question for Darky:
best Black Sabbath dvd?

Concert-wise, I don't think any of them are that special.... like with Deep Purple, there don't seem to be many recorded shows from when they were at their peak.

I've got Never Say Die which was from about 1978, which is OK, but it's under an hour, so a newer one like The Last Supper (1999-ish) might be a better bet.

The best Sabbath videos are the documentaries IMHO... Black Sabbath Story I & II are brilliant, plenty of interviews and narration, rare footage, and a lot of the video clips are live ones. The Rock Family Trees series is a doco that I taped off SBS-TV a few years ago, that's also excellent, but I'm not sure if it's available on DVD/video.

Public Enemy - Live from the House of Blues
Rage Against the Machine - Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium
Jebediah - Jebediaries
Ash - Live in Japan

If anyone has the Green Day "Jaded in Chicago" concert, on either VHS or DVD... please get back to me. I'd love to land a copy :)

Muse - Hullabaloo
Butthole Surfers - Blind Eye Sees All
Greenday - International Superhits
Regurgitator - Jingles
Outkast - The Videos
Punk-O-Rama - The Videos: Volume One
Weird Al Yankovic - The Ultimate Video Collection
Uncensored Videos: Rock
Uncensored Videos: Rap

Plus various free DVDs that came as bonuses with CDs including Dandy Warhols, Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Magic Dirt, Muse, Greenday etc...

Yeah, it is rated MA despite Iggy showing "Little Iggy" for a least 3 songs(the old Stooges ones from memory). I saw it for the first time the day after Xmas (I got it for Xmas) and was back home in Adelaide for Xmas staying with my mum. She was a little shocked!
Good DVD to get if your are a fan (and I know you are). Also not a huge amount of stuff from the late 80's and early 90's, which IIRC from another thread you are not a big fan of.

Raw Power/ 5 foot 1/ Dirt / Loose/ Lust for life/ China Girl / I got a right/ Butt town / Real wild child / My baby want to R&R / Neon Forest/ Home / Brick by brick / 1969 / Candy / I wanna be your dog / Search and destroy / Down on the street / The Passenger / Louie Louie / Foxy Lady.

The show is obviously from the Brick By Brick support tour, going by the date and the setlist. Which isn't bad because that's one of his best albums imo.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely pick it up soon. Problem is JB don't stock it and you really have to seek it out if you want it.

How is that DKs one & where do you get it?
Likewise for Iggy Pop live?

.......

The Dead Kennedys DVD is a must if your are a fan. It was originally released by Target Video (on video) in the USA in the 80's and (as far as I know) was only ever released there. I got a copy that was copied from the US version. I picked up the DVD here in Melbourne about two years back at Missing Link and I have seen it at JB-HI. I honestly don't know if it's still available but i'd try someone like 78 in Perth. The Iggy one is new and "should" be available in most places but once again I'd be inclined to try 78.
Dead Kennedys track listing is.........

"California uber Alles / Kill The Poor / Drug me / The man with the dogs / Insight / Let's lynch the landlord / Bleed for me / Holiday in Cambodia/ Viva Las Vegas ". It also includes an interview with Jello Biafra at the time he ran for Mayor of San Franciso. It only goes for 30 minutes or so but is just great.

The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations Tour
The Beach Boys - Endless Harmony
Brian Wilson Presents Pet Sounds Live
Brian Wilson - On Tour
The Beach Boys - Endless Harmony
The Beach Boys - Nashville Sounds (The Making Of 'Stars and Stripes'
The Beach Boys - Good Timin' (Live At Knebworth 1980)

You HAD to ask. :D By the way, the last one is an excellent concert, not that any of you will check it out I'm sure. :p

My boyfriend has a KISS one that I found to be pretty informative. Not sure what it's called but it was mostly a long interview with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons with some footage thrown in.

Alice In Chains - Music Bank
Collective Soul - Music in High Places
Foo Fighters - Everywhere but Home
Incubus - Volume 2
Incubus - Morning View Sessions
Linkin Park - Frat Party at the Pancake Festival
Linkin Park - Live at Texas
Pearl Jam - Single Video Theory
Pearl Jam - Touring Band 2000
Pearl Jam - Live at the Garden
The Offspring - Americana
The Offspring - Huck it

I think that's all of them. The Offspring ones are easily the worst.

Also got a doco on Kurt Cobain, but no Nirvana music (thanks Courtney).

I've been waiting for ages for Faith No More - Who Cares A Lot (Greatest Videos) to be released on DVD. Doesn't look like its ever going to happen though.

edit: couple more additions

Do you find that on some camera shots, the volume is softer, so that when it cuts from shot to shot the sound level is all over the place? Would the fact I have my DVD player hooked up through an older stereo amp with only 2 speakers (the old traditional set-up) or does it sound better on a surround sound system and those variations in the sound levels aren't noticable because it's channelled through 5 speakers?

The old fall back for hard to get stuff, ebay. :D

It's actually a Brazilian release, even though the bloke I won it off was registered in the U.S. Not sure whether you can get it from the US or Europe, should be able to find it somewhere.

As far as extras go, nothing fancy. A short bio, (all the subtitles and cover notes are in Spanish :o) discography and some pics from the concert.

Never seen it, or "12 Wasted Years" on DVD as your collection suggests. Bootlegs or dubs maybe?

If they are, they're devilishly good ones, Darky. Look ridgy didge to me, right down to the trademarks and all. Both are good quality, have the same running order as the old vids, as I said they look the goods. Same as a couple of the Rush ones, Exit, Stage Left and A Show Of Hands. I have seen bio's for A Show Of Hands on official music sites stating it has only been released in Brazil on DVD, might be the same with the Maiden stuff.

Noticed that Pearl Jam make quite a few lists.

If you love Pearl Jam, make sure you buy Neil Finn's DVD - 7 Worlds Collide. It is absolutely brilliant, and to hear Eddie sing Split Enz's 'I see Red' is absolutely classic.

Even if you don't like PJ, make sure you at least see this DVD.
