How many of you, like myself, were exposed to Eurodance and other genres at an early age (myself 5-6 years old in 1997) that formed the basis of what music you loved then and continue to love now?

Were Eurodance, Grunge or Kylie Minogue and Alanis Morrissette like pop the sort of music you first listened to as a kid?

Did you listen to out there or left of field songs like Rednex - Cotton Eyed Joe, Butthole Surfers - Pepper and The Shame of Life or Ween - Push the Little Daisies?

This is basically a '90's music memories thread.

FWIW, Eurodance was my upbringing in the '90's musically.

The following link is, for me, the most '90's song and most Eurodance song.

I grew up with a fair bit of music around me as my parents still lingered onto the hope of being able to continue listening to current music.

It was usually pretty popular stuff (Nirvana, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, The Verve) and some less obvious bands like the Lucksmiths/Church/Bjork and I definitely think my preference for post-punk came from that. I think the videos for Coffee & TV and Da Funk had a huge influence on me – they were pivotal, and they're still two of the most unique feeling film clips I can watch.

Though I think it was like 2000 and not '99, Len's Steal My Sunshine is another. I've always been interested in how the happy always feels so melancholy and I think it's 90s music that did it for me.

Like myself, were you born in 1991?

If you remember the 90s you weren't there.:drunk:

In all seriousness though the early 90s was pretty s**t with stuff like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, then it all changed with Nirvana and alt rock dominated.

There were the obvious big overseas 90s bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Greenday, Tool, Radiohead, Oasis, Blur etc and local bands like You Am I, Spiderbait and Regurgitator which dominated that decade and everyone remembers but there were a heap of more obscure bands that made that decade of music great.

A few obscure favourites.

Len's Steal My Sunshine was 1999, it was a massive hit in San Diego when I was living there back then along with these two tracks.

Cake was also massive in San Diego around that time, they all fitted in with the Southern Californian beach lifestyle vibe.

Saw my primary school and early high school years out in this decade. Was more into just the mainstream stuff as opposed to alternative rock and grunge as a kid, was a massive fan of eurodance back then. 90s eurodance is still an unashamed guilty pleasure of mine.

The decade where bands like Green Day, Silverchair, The Offspring and Foo Fighters to name a few were actually decent.

I'm glad I wasn't a primary school kid in the 90s going by what some of you listened to back then.

The Church bookended that decade nicely.

Started out with Gold Afternoon Fix in 1990.

Then finished it with a triumphant return to form with Hologram of Baal in 1998.

The less said about the mid 90s when Peter Koppes left the band the better.

The sub genres and flavours of the 90s still inform the bulk of my music listening. Urban R&B, post-grunge and eurodance in particular are the three big cornerstones of that mainstream 90s sound for me, but more specifically I still adore the likes of trip hop, early Warp, east coast rap, midwestern rock/roots, etc. Even some of the reggae flavours that popped up on the charts were awesome. I was born in the late 80's and finished primary school in 2000, so the 90s was basically those formative toddler to pre teen years for me, what I would call my childhood years. I recently started revisiting some of my compilation CDs from the 90s period and they stand up really well with my current tastes.

I certainly consider Steal My Sunshine a 90s song. It was released around 1999, although I associate with it as a 99/2000 summer hit (I think it reached the top 3 over here, around the time that songs like Blue, I Try and Mascara were at the top).

My top 20 favourite albums of the 90s;

1. OK Computer
2. Is This Desire?
3. Mezzanine
4. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1
5. Nowhere
6. Bedtime Stories
7. Older
8. Midnight Marauders
9. Amber
10. Achtung Baby
11. Priest=Aura
12. Chiastic Slide
13. Erotica
14. Debut (Bjork)
15. Diva
16. In Utero
17. Blue Lines
18. Pygmalion
19. Succour
20. Dummy
HM: Being There, Loveless, Aenima, Protection, Post, Ray of Light, Illadelph Halflife, Without You I'm Nothing, Illmatic

^I think that sums up my taste in general a fair bit.
At the time though I only owned alternative rock/pop albums like The Living End S/T, Regurgitator's Unit, Korn's Follow the Leader, Limp Bizkit's Significant Other, Savage Garden S/T, few comps, soundtracks and singles. Pretty typical taste for any kid in the late 90s. Of those, Regurgitator still hold up pretty well, and I still pull out the GH of Korn and Savage Garden every now and then.

A Night at the Roxbury for me is one of those films that has an oh so 90s soundtrack.

Texas (Say What You Want, Black Eyed Boy, etc.) is one of those bands that seems to have utterly fallen off the radar when talking about the era, but I recently went back and listened and didn't feel like it had aged well unfortunately.

Bolded = songs that were among the first I ever heard/remember.

Also, do you ever remember hearing my ultimate Eurodance guilty pleasure then?
Whigfield - Sexy Eyes.

Yep, sure do, Sexy Eyes was one of the bigger songs from the first half of 1997 from memory.

Remember it being played something like 1/10 songs every day.

It was either played at lunch or dinner.

Sometimes late at night but that was because night time then was Eurodance central.

Speaking of night time music, this would've been cranked up.

This too:

My earliest music memories was watching RAGE on weekends back in 1997 and these 3 songs first stood out to me for their video clips.

The Prodigy - Breathe
The Offspring - Gone Away
White Town - Your Woman

From this: The Offspring became my first favourite band, and I went on to discover their previous albums Smash and Ignition (Ripping albums both of them). Was a pretty big fan of theirs, and my first concert was seeing them for the Splinter Tour in 2004. I still play their older albums a couple of times a month, but the last two albums have been average at best, with only a couple of highlights on each album.

138 songs there.
Even though some of those songs originate outside of 1997/98, song-wise that is a pretty awesome summation of that era in chart music. I remember about 95% of that list, fond memories.

FWIW, what's your year of birth in relation to myself and 1991?

Remember Eurodance being flogged on the radio at night?

Good memories.

The Offspring - Gone Away

Wouldn't have been as fun or as commercially lucrative, but I wish this band had explored this side of themselves more. Would have been an interesting, less stodgy direction for that post-grunge sound to go in. That song doesn't really sound quite like a whole lot else that was going on in rock at the time.

Excuse me if I'm taking the thread too seriously, too.

Mr Blonde! They never made a sequel for that video. Did she get away? That was a fine EP.

And the sister from Len. She was always rather attractive.
