Another 8kgs puts him at 78kg for a guy just under 180cm .

Assuming he's put on muscle, would 78kg be a reasonable playing weight?
In the article it says he was 75kg's going in so he would be 82kgs and he is 182cm's. Gaff is 181cm's and 84 Kg's so he isn't to far off if he wants to played as a solid mid. Depends what role we have for him?

Jailed forward Murray Newman will be asked to stick to an individually-tailored fitness program away from West Coast after his release on parole next month ahead of a likely return to full training for the start of pre-season.

The 20-year-old will be released from prison next week after serving six months of a one-year sentence for assault outside a Northbridge nightclub in November 2012.

The Eagles have indicated they will retain Newman on their rookie list for 2015, but the 2011 No.23 draft pick will not immediately return to training at the club, even if the Eagles keep their season alive at the weekend.

A meeting is due to be held between Newman, his manager Jason Dover and senior West Coast officials within days of his release.

Newman is expected to be given new fitness targets for the off-season, having already been assigned a strength and conditioning program while in jail.

_The West Australian _understands Newman was 75kg but has bulked up 8kg while incarcerated at the Wandoo Reintegration Facility in Murdoch.

He has also completed weekly training sessions under former North Melbourne forward Warren Campbell, but was barred by West Coast from playing football for the Wandoo and Wooroloo prison team in the WAAFL.

Dover said Newman was in an "extremely good position mentally".

"He's obviously had a lot of time to think about what he's done and also career-wise what's behind him, but also what is maybe ahead of him," Dover said.

"He's really focused to come back. The club's just been fantastic in the way they've stood by him and he's very keen and motivated to reward that faith and loyalty that the club's shown.

"He wants to show them and prove that he's an AFL player and he's very focused on getting out and getting into training."

The club has stuck by the four-game forward, granting him a leave of absence in 2013 and choosing not to de-list him when he was sentenced in March.

In May, Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said Newman would be retained on the club's rookie list next year.

"That's our intention because one of the things we find with young people is that if you don't give them a second chance, they don't learn from it," Nisbett said.

Newman's pace in the forward line could make him a valuable asset in 2015.

Great news.

I'm always a bit skeptical about these big bulks players seem to have. 8kg on Newman would be gigantic. Can't all be functional mass, surely.

Though it's still a good thing.

A guy I used to go to school with who went in the can, ended up putting on quite a bit of muscle inside.

Surely there wouldn't be much else to do apart from train all day. Not that I'd know!

The food they provide probably wouldn't be the best for putting on lean muscle. You would be limited on when and how much you can eat which would limit how big you could get over a short period of time.

Lot of steroids available in jail!

I wonder if he still gets drug tested by ASADA/AFL while in jail?
Yeah was about to say the same. Thats interesting isn't it? ...could be Murray Newman's "high altitude training in Arizona". We will have to come up with a better name due to the altitude not being great but I'm sure we could spin some sports science BS like "heavily incarcerated training".
