Hmmm Good Friday Football? What is the AFL's current stance on this? The SANFL will play Good Friday Football in 2012 as confirmed by South Adelaide but I'm not sure if the AFL will budge :(

^A good fixture there Matt121 but just two things:
-MCG cannot host NAB Cup games due to the cricket.
-Grand Final will not be in New Zealand, will be a Round 1 game at best.

Several things I made sure of in mine- used entirely regional venues (only game at Etihad/another major venue e.g. AAMI Stadium would be the GF). A big 4 club (Hawthorn) play in Geelong, something that will not happen during the regular season, and Carlton play at their spiritual home of Princes Park (play challenge matches there anyway so why not a regular NAB Cup game?).

A number of people don't understand Essendon's split of it's home games with the MCG/Etihad.

We have 7 HOME GAMES at Etihad and 4 HOME GAMES at the MCG (number of you had 5 at the MCG which most Essendon fans would love but it won't happen).

Next season is also our turn to HOST the Dream Time at the G game. We alternate this with Richmond with them having hosted it this season (like we do with Collingwood and it's opposite years).

I'd be assuming we'll get the home game Vs Carlton first time around next season as this match usually alternated yearly BUT this was the first time they got the home fixture first up Vs us for the 2nd year in a row.

Done some editing
Pool 1 will be played at the SCG not the MCG
Pool 6 will be played in New Zealand not Ethaid and the other way round
Pool 2 will be played at Princess Park not over at WA
Quarter Final 1 will be played at TIO Stadium not Adealide Oval

lol, You do realise that they play cricket at the SCG as well, which makes that unavailable for the NAB Cup as well.

Also i think one of the pools will be played on the Gold Coast

Would be filthy if that was Richmond's draw. Six away games vs interstate teams plus skilled stadium and Hawthorn in Tassie.

That would've been my first choice but the problem with that is you also have to swap around the Adelaide game so you don't have two games outside of AAMI in one week and then two at AAMI in the return match and that stuffs the whole fixture up.

In the end, I figured, stuff the extra game at TIO - they used to get two anyway and surely Richmond is rich enough they don't need it so I turfed it.

Besides, Richmond were right royally shafted by this draw - six interstate matches (two at AAMI and Subiaco and one each against the new guys), a neutral interstate against Hawthorn at York Park (it was either them or St Kilda and the Saints were there two years ago). At least they had a lot on free to air.

Richmond and Essendon aside, everyone else probably got a pretty good draw.

Collingwood got a ridiculously good draw. 3 interstate matches. it was almost 2!
I think you missed the point of attempting a fixture, Its meant to be fair, not just possible.

Also, first week will probably be similar to this year, with gws and sydney playing in sydney, GC and Brisbane in GC, Freo and WC in perth ect to avoid excess travel.

Yeah did think Richmond got a pretty raw deal. From reading over it, I don't imagine Port Adelaide, GWS, Gold Coast, Saints, Tigers, and Melbourne supporters would be overly happy with it. TBH I wasn't very pleased with the finished product myself, however it would be far too difficult and time consuming to repeat it. I may attempt a 2013 fixture late next year, however that is a fair while off yet.

Some key points:
-Easter Round is Round 2.
-Giants open with two away, low-key games before things really begin to heat up.
-I've done the floating round in Round 22 as opposed to allocating timeslots for Round 22.
-Split Round is Round 12.
-Collingwood v Carlton to open season rather than Richmond v Carlton.
-Ninth timeslot is the Saturday twilight game.
-I've included additional Thursday night and Monday night games.

The major reason I created this is because I wanted to gain a feeling of what creating a fixture would be like, and in addition to this I was bored and had some time on my hands. I realise it is not completely 'fair', as I've retained all major blockbusters (Queens Birthday, ANZAC Day etc.) except for the season opener. I've also given some teams more blockbusters than others. Anyway, feedback/criticism is much appreciated, will attempt to change something if I've made a mistake or if you suggest so.
Top effort, and perhaps the AFL could do far worse than the roster you did. In fact I know they will, as you only have Collingwood playing 15 games at the "G", and we all know they will get 18-20, and you know that they wont travel interstate 5 times as you have listed. Twice if we are very very lucky. Anyway I commend you, and overall, a great fixture........well done!

you didn't put much thought into this did you?

you've got the eagles playing back to back games in melbourne, followed up by back to back games in adelaide and sydney a few weeks later.

don't have to be too bright to realise that isn't happening.

also the eagles and sydney take it in turns hosting an anzac game. whens its the eagles turn its either the week before or after anzac day since freo have the len hall game. the eagles hosted it this year so next year should be in sydney on anzac w/e.

NAB Cup will not have the same exact format as it did this year, which is a shame as I think it worked perfectly.

Instead, Week 1 will have group matches as it did this year, but Weeks 2 and 3 will already be pre-fixtured games and they will be standard matches. A pre-season ladder will be used. Top 2 playoff in the final in Week 4 while other sides to just have practice games amongst eachother. In other words, 4 games will be played (2 standard, 2 lightening games) prior to the Week 4 to determine the finalists.

Poor system since it could be possible to have more than 2 undefeated clubs after Week 3, so some club(s) might miss out.

Then again, its just pre-season so big whoop.

For Week 1, most likely the WA sides will host a Vic side in Perth, SA sides hosting a Vic side in Adelaide, NSW sides to host a Vic side at Blacktown, QLD sides to host a Vic side at the Gold Coast, and then 2 all Vic pools at Etihad Stadium/Skilled Stadium/or other regional venue.

Someone's got a lot of time to do this....anyway, my attempt is based on virtually splitting the clubs into 3 clusters of 6 (no tables or anything to be kept amongst these teams), and having everyone playing each other once by the end of Round 17. What I am also doing in terms of the draw (apart from floating Round 22 as is the norm), is also going to float Saturday and Sunday games from Round 18-21. This means that the match itself is scheduled for that day, but it is up to the networks to decide which match is played in which timeslot.

OTHER SPORTS/TIME FACTORS

In Round 1 (up to Saturday Night games) as well there is Daylight Savings and which states don't have it to consider. Cricket is no factor as the Shield final is held the weekend before the opening round. A-League finals are played through first 4 rounds of season which really only affects Perth (who may use Subiaco for Grand Final if they make it) and Melbourne (Victory and Heart will likely use Docklands for a GF venue, possibly may use Docklands for early finals depending on opponent).

Formula 1 GP not a factor as that is scheduled for weekend of NAB Cup GF. V8 Supercars are yet to announce dates other than Clipsal (which is during NAB Cup) which has effect on TV, particularly in Northern States. RL State of Origins are scheduled for May 23 (Docklands), June 13 (Olympic Stadium) and July 4 (Brisbane - not an issue but double header may be played on 6 July so pointless having a Qld team on FNF that week) so venue availability in the lead in to the first 2 games in particular may be an issue.

Olympic Stadium may be unavailable on any of 9 June, 16 June or 23 June because of Rugby Union internationals against Wales. Olympic Stadium also unavailable 7 July due to Super 15 match. Subiaco unavailable for a Saturday night in August/early September due to Four Nations match vs South Africa. Showgrounds not available for first 3 weeks due to Easter Show.

The virtual groups in mind (so that certain games such as 2 derbies in each market are kept as well as other traditional rivalries) are.....

GROUP 1: Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Gold Coast, Richmond
GROUP 2: Fremantle, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, St.Kilda, West Coast
GROUP 3: Adelaide, Greater Western Sydney, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Sydney, Western Bulldogs

Some other ideas I have in mind.....

- Only 1 Derby/Showdown/Stoush (better than Q Clash which is lame)/whatever Sydney is called per weekend

- Season opener to be Carlton vs Essendon on Thursday Night

- Geelong to have home game vs Melbourne on Saturday afternoon at Kardinia Park in Round 1

- GWS to play away from home in first 3 rounds due to Easter Show in Sydney

- Brisbane to play Collingwood @ The Gabba on Easter Thursday Night

- West Coast to have a home game starting at 6:10 on Easter Sunday Night

- Western Bulldogs vs St.Kilda @ Docklands on Easter Monday

- First "Stoush" to be in Round 3 (Suns Home Game)

- First "Showdown" in Round 4 (Port Home Game)

- ANZAC Day as usual to be Collingwood vs Essendon, starting at 2:45

- First "Sydney Battle" on Saturday of Round 5 (GWS Home Game)

- Len Hall game to be on Friday of Round 5 (Fremantle vs Geelong)

- First "Derby" in Round 6 (Eagles Home Game)

- No games to be scheduled at Docklands between May 20-25 (Rugby League State of Origin on 23rd), between Rounds 8 and 9

- Sydney to have Friday Night Home game @ SCG vs St.Kilda on Queens Birthday Weekend (Round 11, June 8) [There would only be 1 NRL match played with RL Origin 2 being played the next Wednesday]

- Melbourne vs Collingwood usual Queens Birthday match (Round 11, June 11)

- Richmond vs Gold Coast @ Cazalys in Split Round 12 (3:10 Saturday Afternoon 16 June)

- Western Bulldogs vs Port Adelaide @ Marrara, Darwin in Split Round 12 (7:40 CST Saturday Night 16 June)

- Sydney vs Collingwood @ Olympic Stadium, Sydney in Split Round 12 (7:15, Saturday Night, 23 June....if crowd is below 50K then timeslot to go to someone else for 2013)

- Gold Coast Suns to have Friday Night Home game @ Carrara on 29 June (Round 13) vs Carlton

- Richmond vs Port Adelaide @ Marrara, Darwin in Round 17 (7:40 CST Saturday Night, 28 July)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I like the three clusters thing. I have come up with a way to have a fair and equitable draw, using the clusters. However, I call it a fantasy draw, as it would never happen. It is how I would decide the draw without having blockbusters. I think having guaranteed matches makes the draw inequitable, as some teams are guaranteed more money and higher timeslots.

So my clusters, in a perfect world, is based on the finishing order of each year's ladder.

Cluster 1:- Teams 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

Cluster 2:- Teams 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,

Cluster 3:- Teams 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18,

So, based on where teams finished last year, this would be my clusters:-

Cluster 1:- Geelong, Collingwood, Hawthorn, WCE, Carlton, Sydney Swans,

Cluster 2:- St. Kilda, Essendon, N.M., W.B., Fremantle, Richmond,

Cluster 3:- Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Port Adelaide, GCS, GWS *

* Since GWS wasn't in last year, I have allocated them 18th spot.

Now, my fixture would work that each team plays the other five teams in their cluster twice, and the other twelve teams once. So, cluster 1 has the hardest draw (as each team must play 5 of the top 6 teams twice, but the fact that they are better teams, means that, if they want to stay on top, they should get a harder draw). Cluster 3 would get the easiest draw. Now, the theory is, that doing this, there would be eight new teams in the finals each year, but some teams will still win with a harder draw, and some will still lose with an easier draw, so nothing is guaranteed.

So, Cluster 1 would play itself twice, and Cluster 2 & 3 once.

So, 5 teams (twice) = 10 + 6 x 2 (12) = 10 + 12 = 22 rounds.

Collingwood will play at least 3 Fox only games. Some of you guys have them with 2. Even though we have massive TV audiences I just don' see that sort of thing happening.

My only input for this, and ive been saying this for god knows how many years, the first game of the first round (thursday night i suppose) should be a rematch of the grand final at the winners of the grand final home ground.

I see little point creating a fixture, it's tl;dr

What we need is the criteria for creating a fixture. eg
- every Victorian club plays 5 away interstate games
- every team plays each other in the first 17 rounds
- teams coming off a bye only play other teams also coming off a bye
etc, etc

agreed except for bold. i would prefer that each team played each of other 17 teams over the last 17 rounds. i don't like you can play a team in round 1 and not see them again till finals.

i know there isn't a lot of difference between round 1 and round 6, but it's still better imo.

but of course bother situations can be resolved by making rounds 1 to 5, identical to round 18 to 22... or at least the 5 teams you play in those periods are identical, which is easiest done by just making each round identical to the one 17 before it. home venues swapped obviously.

After two gruelling weeks, it's finally done... I don't want to go through that again. All things, considered a pretty fair draw.

A few things.

No Victorian team ever has more than two consecutive interstate matches, however ALL Victorian teams have at one stage of the season back-to-back interstate matches. (ie travel in two consecutive weeks)

No non-victorian team has more than two weeks away from home. No Western-Australian team ever has more one week away from home.

All teams have between 3-7 six day breaks, most have 5 or 6.

Most Victorian teams play between 3-5 Friday night games, the most being Hawthorn and North melbourne with 5 each.

All Victorian teams have at least ten games on free-to-air, the most being Hawthorn and Collingwood who both have 14.

All non-Victorian have between 5-8 on free-to air.

Some parts of this are very flawed (for example the Bulldogs play twelve games on Sundays including TEN in a row from rounds two to twelve) but there's way too much stuffing around to be done to make it perfect.

It's about as fair as it could be and I have a new appreciation for the AFL having to do this EVERY.... SINGLE....YEAR!

Enjoy:

Essendon travel 5 times in the first 12 rounds? Essendon having 10 fox games? I dont think that would happen. We play the Dreamtime at the G game on round 9 every year and we will probably play them twice.
My guess is that we will play Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, Hawthorn and GWS/West Coast twice.

OP's draw is okay but I dont think that we would play all of Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn twice and no interstate team twice. We always play at least one interstate team twice, usually West Coast. The second draw would be perfect!

Strange that the format would be altered as it worked fine this year. Redid my NAB Cup fixture according to the new format, hope I got everything correct:

2011 2010 2009 TOTAL

MELBOURNE 7/3. 5/4. 5/3. +7
HAWTHORN 5/5. 5/3. 5/5. +2
WESTERN BULLDOGS 6/5. 5/4. 4/4. +2
RICHMOND 5/4. 5/5. 4/4. +1
NORTH MELBOURNE 5/5. 6/4. 3/5. 0
COLLINGWOOD 4/4. 2/4. 5/4. -1
CARLTON 4/4. 4/5. 5/5. -1
ESSENDON 4/5. 4/3. 3/5. -2
GEELONG 4/6. 4/5. 5/5. -3
STKILDA 3/6. 3/6. 5/4. -5
47/47 43/43 44/44 (total games victorian teams play versus interstate teams home/away)

The table represents 0 home game (number of games a victorian team hosts a game versus an interstate team/0 away game (represents the number of games a victorian team is hosted by an interstate team)

Eg. In 2011 Stkilda played/hosted 3 home games versus interstate teams yet they were hosted by interstate teams 6 times = -3 for the year (really fair)
That equals 9 games versus interstate teams (under my system they would of hosted 5 interstate teams and 5 games would have been hosted by interstate teams : 5/5 = 0 (fair)

Eg. in 2011 Melbourne played/hosted 7 home games versus interstate teams yet they were only hosted by interstate teams 3 times = +4 for the year (really fair)
that equals 10 games versus interstate teams (under my system they would of hosted 5 interstate teams and 5 games would have been hosted by interstate teams : 5/5 = 0 (fair)

“ FOR VICTORIAN TEAMS THE NUMBER OF INTERSTATE MATCHES HOSTED BY AN INTERSTATE TEAM NEEDS TO BE EQUAL TO THE NUMBER OF MATCHES A VICTORIAN TEAM HOSTS AN INTERSTATE TEAM “ (BEN.C.)

Some Victorian teams have 4 interstate trips versus interstate teams and host 4 interstate teams
Some Victorian teams have 5 interstate trips versus interstate teams and host 5 interstate teams
The formula does not change whether there is 16 teams, 17 teams or 18 teams. It just means more teams will play 5/5 instead of 4/4

The afl are either cheats or they are completely incompetent
The afl continues to tell lies about the fixture like it evens itself out over a few year period that’s absolute rubbish
The afl even brought in overseas software a while back and that has only made things worse
The afl fixture has been an absolute disgrace and totally unfair for a number of reasons but can be easily fixed

In 2010 there were 43games each home and away versus interstate teams
Under my system 3 victorian teams would of played 5 home and 5 away (25 games each way)
7 victorian teams would of played 4 home and 4 away (28 games each way)
(43 games each way)

In 2011 there were 47 games each home and away versus interstate teams
Under my system 7 victorian teams would of played 5 home and 5 away (35 games each way)
3 victorian teams would of played 4 home and 4 away (12 games each way)
(47 games each way home and away)

Obviously teams like Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon would be the choice to play 4/4 so they play interstate teams less often to maximise revenue and higher attendances as they will play more games versus other victorian teams

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The groups of teams are for fixturing purposes only and is in no way conferences or divisions like in US sports
Ladder positions are still determined on wins, draws, losses and percentage and has absolutely nothing to do with what teams you played from what fixturing group
The teams simply need to be broken up to even things up for fixturing purposes

FIXTURE GROUP A

Collingwood
Richmond
Hawthorn

Carlton
Essendon
Melbourne

# group A is for the big clubs and predominately MCG teams (and draw the big crowds)
# group A teams will play other group A teams twice per season (1 home and 1 away)
# group A will play group B teams once per season, 1 section of group B at home and 1 group of section B teams away (it will be the reverse of the other 3 teams in the same group
# group A will play group C teams once per season, 1 section of group C at home and 1 group of section B teams away (it will be the reverse of the other 3 teams)
- Collingwood-Richmond-Hawthorn will have the exact fixture as each other
- Carlton-Essendon-Melbourne will have the exact fixture as each other
# group A teams will play 4 interstate teams away : 1 in WA, 1 in SA, 1 in QLD and 1 in Sydney and host 4 interstate teams

FIXTURE GROUP B

Geelong
Kangaroos
Port Adelaide

St Kilda
Western Bulldogs
Adelaide

# group B teams will play other group B teams twice per season (1 home and 1 away)
# group B will play group A teams once per season, 1 section of group A at home and 1 group of section A away (it will be the reverse of the other 3 teams)
# group B will play group C teams once per season, 1 section of group C at home and 1 group of section C teams away (it will be the reverse of the other 3 teams)
-Geelong-Kangaroos-Port Adelaide will have the exact fixture as each other
-Stkilda-Western Bulldogs-Adelaide will have the exact fixture as each other
# group B victorian teams will play 5 interstate games versus interstate teams (2 in SA, 1 in WA, 1 in QLD and 1 in Sydney) and host 5 games versus interstate teams at home
# Geelong being in group B allows them to play the majority of their home games at Skilled Stadium

FIXTURE GROUP C

West Coast
Brisbane
GWS

Fremantle
Gold Coast
Sydney

#group C is an all interstate group which means they will still play the teams in group C twice (1 at home and 1 away) and the other teams in group A and B once (3 teams from each group A and group B will be at home and 3 teams from group A and B will be away
-West Coast-Brisbane-GWS will have the exact fixture as each other
-Fremantle-Gold Coast-Sydney will have the exact fixture as each other

This grouping of teams in the fixture allows victorian teams to play more games against victorian teams
The inequity in this design is the victorian teams in group B play more games versus interstate teams and less games versus the big victorian teams than group A teams meaning less revenue - the simple solution for this is another equalisation fund
The league will in fact make more money off this design as victorian teams will play each other more often and play less games versus interstate teams - all the main rivalries are in the same group so not even that will be affected

The afl fixture in 2009 had victorian teams playing 44 home and 44 away games versus interstate teams
The afl fixture in 2010 had victorian teams playing 43 home and 43 away games versus interstate teams
The afl fixture in 2011 had victorian teams playing 47 home and 47 away games versus interstate teams (17 teams)
Under the current afl fixture there will likely be even more games versus interstate teams in 2012 as there are more interstate teams which is more unfair and will also mean less money is made by victorian clubs

Under my plan for 2012 victorian teams would play:
6 teams play 4/4 versus interstate teams = 24/24 games
4 teams will play 5/5 versus interstate teams = 20/20 games
Total games victorian teams will play against interstate teams = 44 home/44 away
