In best Ranger Stacy voice:
Your cat is behaving naturally. It's a residual instinct for a cat to grip its mouth onto something whilst "pawing" up and down on a soft surface. This is actually a carry over trait from when it was a kitten - it thinks it is suckling on a teet and it's using its paws to extract the milk. I should know - I do this often myself!!!!

has developed this habit of chewing my doona while he purs really loudly. He also stomps his feet as if he is walking on the spot. It puts him in a trance state. Why does he do it?

He is old btw..13 year old half Siamese half Burmese.

Any cat lovers know why?

The stomping of the feet is kneeding and they do it before they settle down (relating to feeding from their mothers). It simply means he is happy and is settling himself on your doona. Maybe he's taken a liking to the smell (is it a down doona?). If you don't like it wash the doona or cover.

BTW - that's not old - my two cats are 23 and 11!! :)

Is it chewing or nibbling?

Our cats all went through phases doing that (nibbling). My cat still does it. Maybe it's marking its territory? :D And the kneading thing, they all do that, it just makes them comfortable.

My old cat loved to nibble at my elbow ?¿?

Now I've got my little puppy who starts to cry when everyone goes to bed (he is in the family room part of the house) so I have to go over to his basket (which he likes to eat) and comfort him until he falls asleep.

It might interest you to know they are a pure breed... half siamese, half burmese - called a Tonkinese. I know because I have one. The most beautiful nature of any cat that I have owned. :)

They're attack cats.

now hold on pilgrim!!! them be fighting words!!! :D

They are beautiful animals, such a sweet nature, so loving. Kind of like a dog in a cats body. I wouldn't trade my tonkinese (half siamese and half burmese for anything in the world)

all you are doing is encouraging his behaviour. unless you want to go over and 'comfort him' for the rest of his life i suggest you stop doing it immediately. ignore him, he will get used to sleeping there on his own after not long.

btw we will be getting a new pup soon, our old dog died this morning :(

Be still cat!

We had a cat and she used to put her claws into me and used to purr really loudly. Now our dog tries his best at copying the cat's purring. It sounds really funny.
