A couple of points

1) Why would anyone want to leave this wonderful country, despite who is in govt? We have a wonderful and fair democracy, based on the tried and tested Westminster system. We all get a chance to vote for whom we believe will be best for us personally and for the country as a whole.

2) For gods sake you people who dont like howard or the conservatives, shut up. The people have spoken, the people have voted, the people have giving the incumbant an even bigger mandate. What does this tell you?
Well it tells me that the majority are happy with the govt. On a two party preferred basis of 52-48.

3) For the Howard backers. just remember that on a TPP basis 48% of the electorate wanted an alternative, that is a lot of people, so dont think the conservatives have a dynasty. Even when Mr Kennett was at his height, 46% of Victorians didn't vote for him TPP.

4) Who in hell wants to live with a bunch of Kiwi's, Kanaks, or Frogs?

5) Long live our democracy, and our right to vote. I didn't vote for Howard (or Latham for that matter) but accept and respect the decision by the men and women of Australia.

So there, my little spiel. I dont class myself as a leftie, or a psued or any other derisive names consertatives attempt to give people with different views to them. I suppose I am a secular pluralist/ humanist who believes wholeheartedly in the democratic processes of this country.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that tax rates are at record levels. "Tax free day" has been getting later and later in the year. But while the mums and dads with their 1.2 houses see the property market rising and money still cheap they'll accept the tax rates.

When the interest rates climb and house prices dip they'll start scrutinising their taxes and get a nasty shock when they find the saving on rates and their phantom capital growth are actually stripped away by the increased taxes, higher medical/medical insurance bills and full Uni fees for their kids. Then finally they'll realise they've been played by a master and shouldn't have ignored the undeniable evidence of the Rodent's untrustworthiness.

Surprisingly, the media companies are loving the lack of competition in the digital spectrum handed to them gratis by the government. "Bribe" is such a dirty term, but I can't think of another term to use.

The thing you loonies cant seem to get through your heads is that those people who make money tend to create wealth for the economy. Sure there are a few HIH type tossers but what about all those self employed people out there that employ others, pay huge amounts of tax etc. There would be no welfare state without them. If the top rate of tax was lowered to 30% you would find more self employed people earning more money and paying more tax and creating more wealth. Its not hard to understand but people like you, Crean and Macklin seem to have some blind idelogical obsession with everyone having the same share of a small piece of the pie rather than making the pie bigger. The idiot left in the UK in the 1970s had the tax rate on investment income at over 90%. End result the IMF was called in, the rich all went and lived in Spain and the economy went to the ********ter and the working poor lost their jobs in the millions. But at least the rich were getting soaked though.
Medders you talk as though we have had labor Govts for the past 9 years and FINALLY have a liberal one. Oviously Costello, Howard et al have a similar ideological resistance to lower tax rates?

Sorry to point out the obvious but democracy is as fair as it gets.
Not necessarily.

It depends what you mean by fair.

Its certainly the safer option.

We lefties will just have to learn to live with the majorities view but I fear what sort of society we are going to have in the future. I fear that self-interest will become more and more ingrained in our society which I think is wrong. Obviously this is only my view and is worth not much for the next three years.

dont worry about it, we stand on the brink of a glorious age, before us rolling to the horizon are unbroken vistas of verdant pasture, watered by sparkling mountain streams beneath azure skies.

we are indeed the lucky country and we are doubly lucky to have a supreme leader in john winston howard to guide us to the promised land.
