...I reckon he could, and should, be a bit fitter.

We have seen how creative, dangerous and cunnng he is around the goals, but how good would he be as a permanent (obviously you can't be a full 100 minute on-baller) midfielder? He would by far be our best in the middle and his creativity and nous going forward would help the team immensely.

If I was Bomber and the coaching, I would be making Gazz bust his backside this summer to get fitter.

He is good enough to be in the top five players in the AFL.

I tend to agree with you. Although i wouldnt say he was unfit if he could get his fitness level up to the elite level his football coulld go up many more notches.

I hope he has a huge pre season, if he does look out.

CM35 do u also have the password for the username 'Captain Obvious' ?

Hasn't this already been fully discussed on a number of occasions, and the end result being that 1) he hasnt got a big enough engine developed, 2) we would be robbing peter to pay paul if we took him out of the Fwd 50 on a regular basis.

If anything, Gaz's only problem (and he has improved it alot in 2006 as opposed to 2005) is how easily he can be shut down by a good tagger (aka - Steve Baker, Jarrad Crouch)

Once he learns to break tags he will elevate himself from the top 30-50 range to the top 10 in the competition - thats when we put him as a midfielder.

As far as 2007 goes, well im sure he'll be getting as fit as he can (i think ppl are being stupid if they think he's going to cruise along and not push himself this pre season (or any other pre season) - they are all professional footballers and will all be striving to be as fit as possible.

Will happen if he gets fitter.

Not as 'Captain Obvious' as some think.

Am I wrong? I think not.

the problem with the whole side is they aren't fit enough. Maybe that new fitness program being done this year (which by the way has been mentioned in the press numerous times) can help this fitness problem. Better call Bomber and tell him in case he missed the bleedin obvious.

My only real critism of Gazza is he seems to make a habbit of 'playing' for free kicks or if he doesnt recieve it, looks as though he whinges abit to the umpire about it. This is something that I have seen throughout the last season. Yes, he does cop a fair bit of illegal attention maybe, and yes he should recieve alot more frees than what he currently gets, but I think he would be better off putting his head down and concerned for the next contest. If a player saw that his opponent was whinging and playing for kicks, he knows that he has already won. Thoughts?

He missed it last season. I actually think one area Ablett does need to improve on - like everyone apart from Chapman - is kicking for goal. Far too many of our forwards are erratic in front of the big sticks.

I agree in principle, he has to get fitter. But I've always maintained he is better suited to the forwardline than most of our other 'onballer' types.

I'd love to see him play a small, leading forward role out of the goal square, Nathan G Brown-esque.

Thoughts?

Actually, the Gaz/Goalsquare focal point structure was one I was hoping we had the sense to try more often given it's previous success from the limited opportunities it had been granted. From memory, we tried it at least once during the season proper, and the results didn't exactly spell failure.

That, coupled with how predictable and unflexible our forward line structure had become at various (some may argue most/all) stages of the season, should have allowed for its re-introduction at least a couple more times during the year.

I think he needs to be one or the other. Sometimes the over-use of rotation through the midfield for the sake of it robbed us of the obvious need for a crumber/small forward.

I don't think the answer to a lack of goals coming from the midfield is to rob ourselves of small forwards.

I suspect his alleged OP might be worse than anyone is letting on. He doesn't seem the type to slack off with fitness training.
I was thinking along these lines as well. I reckon this is what's holding him back, I've even seen supporters of other teams say that he looks injured. If he can get over this (which I believe is really just a time thing) then he's set for stardom as a top line midfielder.

His kicking for goal has improved heaps this year compared to last year, he used to be a sure thing over the shoulder but a shocker from a set shot, but his set shots did improve this year and he's now a very reliable kick. This could also have something to do with OP and could be a sign he's on the mend.

Gary is a great player and our most exciting. However, he is a sook, a whinger and has a terribe attitude.

Repeatedly during the season he mouthed off at his teammates, refused to listen to instructions from more senior players, mouthing off at them also.

I love him, he is a fan favourite but is clearly not leadership material, not at the moment anyway.

It is one area of the game he could really improve, that and his goalkicking. He misses a lot of getable shots.

I'm not sure about him having a terrible attitude. I think he would've just been frustrated. Not only by the fact the team didn't perform well, but the fact that he was unable to produce his best weekly. He looked to have some injury problems but still pushed himself to play each week.
I think as he will learn to stop sooking as he get older and more experienced.
