Top thread. How good is to be talking about footy!

I would much rather Geelong go in with smaller forwards because if Croft doesn't come up (and it doesn't look like he will) I can't see how we can cover Mooney, Kingsley and McCarthy. If King was to go forward as well we would have to use Bandy (back to midget forward line).

Kritter matched it for speed with M. Lappin last year, so I think he is worth first try on S. Johnson, although Hargrave is much quicker if we need him.

Hargrave handled Farmer last year (granted Farmer plays differently to Riccardi) and Birss would be 2nd choice.

Personnally, I wouldn't play Robbins in the backline as he tends to ball watch.

Definately agree

Kretiuk v Johnson

Kritter is our best match up here. Johnson is a real danger man and Kritter is our best mid sized defender.

Hargrave v Riccardi

Hargrave is a clever footballer who might try and run Riccardi upfield in an attempt to drag him away from goal scoring positions.

Smith v Chapman

a great match up. could have a major bearing on the result. Both had superb games last times around.

I would also go with the following match ups assuming Croft is out

Grant v Mooney

Bassett v Kingsley

Skipper our reserve on the bench to take McCarthy.

? v Ablett

I also don't want to see Robbins in defence, nor Birss. The reality is we don't have a specialist small defender. It could mean we have to play Harrison in the back half and shuffle the deck chairs a bit. Such as Harro v Riccardi and Hargrave v Ablett or Harro v Johnson and Kritter v Ablett.

Maybe even Dimma could come into the mix on a half back flank to take one of the dangerous smalls?

Oh, i realise Steve is undersized, but still, i can't see him being able to compete with Johnson in terms of both leg speed and agility.

Johnson gets his possessions in two ways, firstly by running hard into space, and by using his footy smarts to be at the fall of the ball.

In those two scenarios, i can't see Kretiuk sticking with him.

If Johnson was a one-on-one marking type, then yeah, i'd go for Kretiuk, but in effect, Johnson is a goal sneak who just happens to be 190cm.

We'll definitely play those three talls, along with Johnson, and the small man rotation of Riccardi, Chapman, Ablett and Lord.

King will definitely get a run at full-forward. Whilst Peter Street is a hack, he's a big hack, and a damn good tap ruckman who i feel can compete admirably with Darcy and Bandy at centre bounces.

Obviously Darcy will murder him around the ground, but Darcy beats everyone with his roving style, so thats to be expected.

I don't think we'd mind that actually. Ricco is still a very good midfielder with sublime skills, so being dragged into the midfield wouldn't really create a weakness for us.

If you could drag someone like Lord or Ablett up the ground, then you might be able to exploit Lord's lack of fitness, or Ablett's small stature.

Kritter has a lot of experience, getting into body on body contact that sort of thing. He will force his opponent to lead far and wide to shake him.

Brown killed him in a practice match, but thats Brown. I think he has decided to be unstopable this year.

Like others said, we dont have a specialist small defender yet. But I think it has to be robbo. If he can balance his defensive duties with his run and long kicking, it will be great.

And when we played Smith on him, Johnson killed him in the air. It has to be Kretiuk or Hargrave.

Doctor, Harro on Riccardi??? Get your mind back on the game!

how would you match up your backs against our sharpshooters? Our forwards would look something like this

HF: Johnson, Bandy, Giansiracusa
F: Brown, Wiggins, Garlick

how would you see it based on this forward set up of 2 talls and 4 smalls?

What about 3 talls with Harro, Croft or Skipper?

I'd prefer 3 tall forwards but;

I'm assuming Croft is out. Have already mentioned Skipper as a bench candidate in an earlier post on defenders. Harro not as good as the 4 smaller players. Maybe the bench for Harro.

I am at work and put it together off the top of my head.

You can replace Eagle or Faulkner or both with these guys if you wish. My best 18 stays unchanged however for round 1 at this stage.

hmm, let me see.

Riccardi: quick, instictive, good at ground level
Harro: plodding, fumbling, hesitant

no, looks fine to me ;P

Hey guys,

I think you are going to have to get used to Matthew Robbins playing in the back pocket for a majority of the time. Occasionaly venturing up into the midfield....but mostly spendin his time down back

If Skip plays I will make my avatar Paul Dimattina for a month, if he doesn't you make your avatar one K. Hunter for a week. And neither of us can mention in our titles or sigs anything about why our avatars are what they are. You on biatch?

So where is sporty with his new avatar.:D
