As of Monday after rnd 23, season 2016 finsihed, and season 2017 officially started. The first order of business is to review players, make the tough choices of ending careers and look at ways to improve next year.

What i will be doing (hopefully over the next few weeks) is to review every stage of the 2016 season to see what the hell just happened - including player reviews and ratings.

Here we go *gulp what am i in for*

2016 was a balls up from the start.

Season 2016 started after our 3rd straight elim loss in a row. The media was talking up our lot and made statements along the lines that we had shown enough to finish top 4 (as we were a brain fade from Bachar from doing that during 2015), and that our premiership window was now open. Dustin Martin were about to take the next step into superstardom, Rance was one of the best players in the comp, youngsters like Lennon, Cellis and Lloyd were showing signs, and b grade players like Titch and Bellis played their career best seasons and were looking to really improve. All we needed was some class and speed to add to our outside run and we'd be looking at a successful year

Delistings/Retirements
Heading into the trade period, our list of player outs was a list choc full of experience that needed replacing, plus a few youngsters that had been given a few opportunities

Outs - Foley, Newman, Knights, Petterd, Thomas, (all retired) Arnot, McDonough, Dea and Gordon. (all de-listed)

*Dea was drafted by the druggos and showed a lot in their backline*

Trade and FA period
we went in with a clear plan to trade in a whole bunch of gun players. treloar was even money to join, Harley Bennell used us to get freo jealous and offer him more money, and eventually we were left with our d*ck in our hands.

Our trade period involved the brilliant idea to trade out 2015's and 2016's 2nd round picks for Gold Coasts 2015's pick 19, which we on-traded to the "icing on the 2016 cake" Chris Yarran - in the hope that a top 4 finish would mean that 2016's 2nd round pick would be sitting at around pick 34.

We also traded late in the piece (what went down as a huge WTF moment) for a young unproven inside 'beast' in Townsend + pick 120 for pick 70.

The fact that we didn't trade out any players showed what other clubs thought of our depth.

We didnt manage to sign any restriced/unrestricted free agents, but we ended up bringing in another inside mid in the former top 10 pick, now delisted, Andrew Moore from Port Adelaide (continuing our recent reliance on picking up a former Port player).

Overview:
INS - Yarran, Townsend, pick 120 (not used), Andrew Moore (DFA), 2015 1st round (pick 19)
OUTS - 2015 2nd round (pick 31), round 7 (pick 70), 2016 2nd round (currently pick 24), 2015 1st round (pick 19)

Unless Yarran had won AA honours and finished top 5 in our B& F and we finished top 4, this trade period was never going to be a success - trading out 2 years worth of 2nd round picks for Yarran was ludicrous and in the end cost us so much more that it was ever going to gain us.

In the end, Yarran, Townsend and Moore ended up playing a total of 9 games, and have done absolutely nothing to improve the club. Pick 120, which wasnt used, has given us the exact same output as the other 3 combined.

This is how the picks we traded out were used:
Pick 19 ended up as pick 23 and Carlton got David Cunningham while the next 4 picks were Ben Keays, Josh Dunkley, Kieran Collins and Darcy Tucker. (totalling 40 games this year)
Pick 31 ended up as Pick 36 and went to WCE who picked up Tom Cole, while 3 picks later Lions got Rhys Mathieson who looks to be a decent player.
Pick 70 was not used
2016 2nd rounder has ended up becoming a top 25 pick because of our horrible year, so GC are still laughing at this trade.

Our trading/FA period was the ULTIMATE fail and was really an F- rating (and that is being generous)

next up
i'll discuss our national/rookie and preseason draft selections and get into preseason training heading into the season (including a minor incident that noone talked about at all)

Carlton should have taken the two second rounders - our bad year meant they missed out too (asides from us taking Yarran of their hands). Gold Coast are the ones still laughing at the deal.

We got Rioli and Markov in the draft. Cant see how its a F- period
You do realise Rioli wasn't who they wanted but to suck us in cause of the name they went with him and thank god they did he will be something under proper guidance.Markov has been the high light for me for a few years again under the right guidance he could be anything.
The f period isn't it overall for the whole team?

Yes? But considering we got 2 good players in the draft the whole draft/trade/fa period couldnt be lower than a D

Everything seemed to point towards Rioli prior to the draft, we've been very leaky with our first rounders. Small forward has been a real need and his tackle pressure will be awesome in years to come. Our trading period didn't go well, so losing those second rounders will be really telling this year but our draft night looks okay for what our draft position was.

Part Deux
National Draft
So after are trade, we headed into the National Draft with picks 13, 50, 67, and 120

After our first 2 bids for players were matched, we ended up drafting a small creative forward, a running machine winger/hbf, and a medium defender. In what has become a recurring theme in the past few years, only one of these players was an 18 year, with a 19 and 22 year old also drafted.

Pick 15 - Daniel Rioli Nth Ballarat Rebel TAC Cup/St Marys 179 cm / 65 kg
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/player-profile/daniel-rioli
A small crumbing forward, with exceptional pace and intensity belying his size, Richmond added the nephew of legend Maurice and Hawthnron superstar Cyril. blitzing in th draft combine, Daniel adds polish and class in a position that RFC have lacked of the last decade, since the days of N Brown.

Pick 50 Oleg Markov - Nth Adelaide - 188cm/73kgs
A pick that left a lot of people scratching their heads saying "who?. a tall, slightly built rebounding defender/wingman, Markov was a bit of a surprise draft pick, whose speed and athleticism was seen as a benefit to a team that was in need of some outside speed. Was not expected to line up too often in 2016, with the likes of Houli, Deledio and McIntosh already playing those positions.

Pick 67 Nathan Broad - Swan Disctricts - 192cm/83kg
a mid-sized/tall defender who was also a bit of a surprise draft choice, Broad is an attacking defender who RFC thought was along the same mold as our other Swan Districts attacking defender. a very quick player who was rated top in repeat sprints at the draft combine, he was clearly recruited to help our high pressing style with his closing down speed.

Our 3 drafts picks were not seen to be able to make a huge impact in 2016, with our list expected to make a good dash for the top 4. However, a combination of injuries and form meant early opportunities for Rioli, while Markov was given a debut half way through the year and Broad getting a couple of games once finals was caput.
To say our players were a revelation is an understatement - Rioli showed that he has that natural ability and oozes the class that you'd expect from a player with the surname Rioli. Markov came in and basically cemented his spot in the back half as a rebounding intercept marking jack in the box who was very stiff to not pcick up a rising star nomination this year. Broad came in and, while he didnt show too much, didnt disgrace himself either, with an average disposal efficiency of 85% over his 2 games.

Ntional Draft Ranking B+
Rioli and Markov look 10 year players, while Broad will need another year to show what he has, but the jury is out on him still.

We also ended up elevating rookie Kane Lambert.

No-one was taken in the preseason draft

Rookie Draft
looking to top up a few areas of weakness, the tigers took a punt on 2 tall developing players and an inside ball winning vfl star as our picks in the rookie draft. All ended up playing senior footy this year, but mostly due to our poor season where Hardwick decided to throw everyone to the wolves in the end.

Pick 12 - Callum Moore - Calder Cannons - 193cm/85kgs
a former basketballer who took up football late, Moore is an athletic footballer who needed to spend a year on the list improving his skills and knowledge. Was given 2 games late in the year but wasnt able to show too much as our team was shot. didnt touch the ball much and kicked his first goal from a joe the goose over the top.

Pick 30 - Mabior Chol - Aspley (QLD) 198cm/78kgs
another tall, athletic key forward/ruck with plenty of raw ability, but lacking size was taken in Mabior Chol. showed a lot in the pre-season to have the supporters giggling with glee that he could be our tall excitment machine to replace the lumbering robot that is Tyrone Vickery in the forward line. Played the final game of the year and his only kick was almost a goal from outside 50 on the run. Dimma said he was not ready for the debut and, in reality, shouldn't have played. But this kid has heaps of upside if he is allowed to do his thing.

Pick 47 Adam Marcon - Williamstown (VFL) - 180cm/80kgs
a mature age rookie taken, Marcon was a ball winning inside Mid at VFL level that won the rising star award at VFL level, as well as playing in their premiership side. was given 2 games later in the year and did pretty well, averaging 19 possessions and showing a bit around the ball. Was dropped after a good game against the Pies and then was subsequently delisted after 1 year. Which was a bit of a waste.

Our rookie draft C.
all three were promoted and played, but didnt show too much , and with one already delisted and the other 2 set for a few years developing in the VFL, time will tell whether this was successful.

Overall Ranking B
Overall, our drafting in the national and rookie draft can receive a B in total, as all the players got a game with some showing great signs and others showing that, developed correctly, could offer something.

Marcon was stiff to be delisted. Showed enough for me to warrant another year
