Ive been in the industry for 6 years. Swear on my young son i have not once put a single dollar in a machine.

I find it sickening when i walk into work and there is a lady on a one cent machine at 9pm and when i leave at 3am she is still on it pressing buttons not winning a cent. Its so bad.

Wow that would be depressing to see stuff like that.
I have only used a pokie machine once when i was 18 and went out for a dinner.
Put maybe $10 in it.
Never interested me and it seemed very obvious to me from that age the machines are programmed to make you lose money.

I'm glad i never got into those god awful things.

Going to Crown Casino a few times for the first time was a real eye opener. Particularly after I had been a few times and stopped in once or twice with a few mates during the afternoon. The same older lady we would see a fair bit late at night or early in the morning would begin making her way to the tables at about 3-4pm and would quickly blow whatever she first had.

By 5pm she was already getting somewhat hysterical after hardly ever getting a bet right.

God knows how much she would blow there in a session.

I previously worked at a racetrack and casino. You do get those regulars that come in and sit there all day. They tend to be older. My mother-in-law had a boyfriend she had to ditch due to his gambling problems. He started with online poker but now he's one of those people at the casino. Occasionally I've dropped in there for a drink or a race and he's usually there.

Cheers guys, feeling good about it.
Went out for a counter meal and a couple beers tonight.
Harness/greyhound racing was on in the backround, didn't worry me at all.
Early days but hopefully that continues.
You are fooling yourself, Kanga. Why tempt yourself? If you sit in a barber chair long enough you will eventually get your hair cut!

Look at it this way. People gamble because ultimately they want the pay off. Easy money without working. So what would you spend the $$$$$$ on if you won? What ultimately motivates you?

Casino has a massive suicide rate in the bathrooms. Just not publicised.

Yet how does society solve this? Most of these people are throwing caution to the wind (and predictably given the odds coming up short) and have not much money, are chronically unemployed and down and out. What else are they going to do?

I suppose when i was gambling i always wanted to buy the things and luxuries that i couldn't afford at the time with working.
And also just wanted to create a buffer for myself.

You can't be successful at punting if you are an addict though, just not going to work as you need to know when to walk away and what sports/races to leave alone.

Hi MEB
Not to bad, i went to my first counselling session and it went well.
Going to go back again fairly soon for another one.
I am also going to do some financial counselling and i've made a new bank account for my GF to control for awhile til i'm on my feet.

Can't wait to get all these loans/debts paid off.
I have to come up with money to get my car fixed as well.

I know how it feels to have debt piling up on top of you and giving control of your money to someone else for a while is a great idea--that's exactly how I've gotten my finances under control. I'm glad that you found the counselling productive. May I suggest booking your next session in so that you're locked in and ready to go? Maintaining your resolve is important.

Thanks yeah it was hard to confess.
But she said nothing makes her more angry than me keeping things secret so at least it's all out there now and we can move forward.
Gonna make it so my work pay goes into that account and she can just transfer an allowance to my other bank account for what i need
(Petrol, food, other essential items) And if i want to buy myself something once things are better financially i could do that but just tell her first and discuss it with her.

Lucky to have her and the two girls, i just gotta be thankful for what i got.
Rather than ever living in that fantasy land of gambling again...

It makes me sick what it made me turn into.
I've lost money, i've lost prized possessions and lost self-respect.
But i'm slowly gaining it back.
All gambling accounts are closed obviously so i'm moving forward now.

Hoping in a few months i'll really start to notice the difference on the bank account and happiness :)
