Re: My take on Jack.

i know for another fact that trengove and wattsy are studying at rmit, property management/development iirc

players are encouraged to engage in society and prospects for life after football, all you need to think of is the media tour that watts, scully, trengove, frawely, grimes and morton were taken on not a week ago

my observation of watts' games is that he has an incredible natural skill, great hand eye coordination. generally when he has the ball he does something good with it, but its when he doesn't have it he's unsure of where to position or impose himself to gain advantage. i don't like to draw negatively on things, but in my opinion he appears somewhat lazy and plays without urgency?

Re: My take on Jack.

Lol the fact you pointed out my loaction is. Also saying:

Is clearly one. Attack the opinion, not the poster. this thread needs severe moderation...

I don't see how it is.

I'll go through it,
You live in Hobart, correct?
Hobart has no AFL team, correct?
Therefore I made the assumption that you do not have current and frequent contact with young AFL players.

Am I wrong? How is that a personal attack?

I have nothing against living in Hobart, but it is a fact that you will have a limited amount of access to AFL footballers.

i think he still has a bit to learn irt positioning and i agree, with the ball he has good smarts, without it he needs a bit of work

he also has only had one real pre season, so unfortunately he doesn't have the tank to play that roaming chf role at a riewoldt like intensity and urgency

compare it to someone like hurley who has had the better part of three pre seasons, he can maintain a higher intensity for most of the game

Having watched Thu Nights game, I think there is a lot to like about his game. Is he going to be that dominating Gureilla type FF or HF, like a Brown, Fevola, Hall, Gehrig? Absolutely not but not many players are. Is he going to be a "Punish the opposition by running his opponent ragged into the ground" like a Riewoldt? Unlikely. I think the biggest problem in his development is that there aren't the other Older / Mature big bodies Forwards that would allow him to become the 3rd tall, getting the 3rd best defender and allowing to slowly grow into his role. That's not his fault. Definetely a long term project / late maturer. But what he displayed on Thu night was quite good I thought. Got a ton of the ball, took many good marks, positioned well. I suppose the expectation is that he should in at F50 taking pack marks and slotting a few goals a week. This may take years to play out, or maybe his role is as a dynamic tall Utility or dashing & offensive defender. I can't see anything too wrong with him to be honest. Being pick 1 is the biggest downfall, if he was pick 20, everyone would be saying that he is coming along nicely. And being pick 1 isn't his fault

Like your reading. But I hate how everyone says he will be a 'late bloomer', without really defining what that means. Is that 24 or 25? Because personally I think that's a bit unrealistic, and we should be expecting a lot more of him than that.

He's a 197cm, Larke medallist number 1 draft pick with an excellent growing midfield delivering him the ball. He needs pressure on him to perform and mature as quickly as he can, without holding anything back now. Played badly in Round 3, and then by Round 5 pulled out a considerably stellar performance. That's great, and if he can continue to improve we should see the best of him by next year, or early the year after. And that's certainly not late (his 4th and 5th years, but can be considered as his 3rd and 4th with a bit of experience considering his draft circumstances).

That's pretty much my take too, Kernel, that Jack would have benefitted from a good big bodied forward to take pressure off him and show him the ropes on field. I don't necessarily subscribe to the 'late bloomer' concept though, he just wasn't a ready made footballer. If he's starting to really hit his straps in 2 years time like I expect, he'll be 22 years old and I would've thought that would be perfectly acceptable and realistic.

i loved his game on thursday, he looked so much more confident than i have seen him in a match for a while, when we were down he attempted a big mark twice, once over a pack the second time running back with the flight

i though he wanted to stand up and be the one to get us back, which was encouraging

i wan't him to be given goal scoring opportunities, but at the moment i think our midfield isn't up to the level where jack will get a lot of the ball in the f50.

like how jurrah suffered on thursday night

It takes KPP and Ruckmen a lot longer to mature and become accustomed to their taller bodies than midfielders. Ruckmen are in their prime around 25-28. Maybe what I said was a generalisation / flippant remark.

I agree with Mickey Maltouse. Get as many games into Jacky Watts as possible.

Sadly I agree with this also - makes it hard to motivate the other players though.

I did my degree in that department!

Interesting for me - not so much for you guys :o

I think JW is getting better as time goes on, he is not being helped by our form.
I suspect that in a good team he would be getting better press.
I do not think he will ever be the Champion I expected when he was draft at No.1 a few years back however that does not mean he will not be a good player for the MFC.
My Champion spot is now reserved for Cook, hope the FD know what they are doing picking another skinny kid that will take at min. a couple of years to develop because the alternative is all ready tearing them up e.g. last thursday.

On the rare occasions we get it forward their is no one there. Not sure how JW or LJ are expected to kick goals when they are inside our defensive half for 75% of the game.

I think it was the best game he has played for us, he started well pulling down a big mark in the couple of minutes & that seemed to give him a lot of confidence. A couple of his leads were honoured (for once) & he was able to break away from his opponent. I thought his demeanor showed a real desire, he wanted to influence the game & to some extent did. I think being the sub against GC was a mistake but it may have been what motivated him against the Eagles. He solidified his spot in the team with this performance.

for mine there were 2 moments that were 'nearly there' moments and they would have ended up in him possibly finishing with 3 goals... the first he was in the pocket wrestling with his man and he went back with the flight copped one across the back of the ears but not for one second took his eyes off the footy which impressed me the most he just didnt hang onto the mark

the second was in the goalsquare he flew from behind in the pack and had a good piece of it but couldnt hold on, had he taken those and kicked 3.. we would have been talking about his best ever again.. he has rekindled my faith that he will be ok.. really needs to back it up this week though

The second coming of TJ?:

- was taken at #1 in the draft.
- was selected ahead of a promising young ruckman.
- obviously has shitloads of talent coming out of his arseh*le.
- plays nowhere near what he's capable of consistently.

I can see your point here YDKJ - Watts does have height on his side so if he can develop a marking game over the next 3 years that could be the difference.

I want to see him leading hard out of the blocks though - he looks a little 'lumbersome' when on the move so far.

Still, the only other player I would consider if we had the draft again would be Hurley to be honest (Hill is good but we dont need him as much). So I am not complaining at all.
