What exactly is the point of the new system then, if it's only going to cost more (both to implement and for the commuters) and take up more time for commuters?

I suspect that only the Minister for Stupidity herself could answer that. And still somehow manage to get it completely wrong.

It wasn't actually Kosky's brainchild, this myki system. It was another current minister, whose name escapes me now. But it is he who should cop the brunt of the blame and disdain for the new system.

So you have to "swipe" your card on and off? I've been on trams where you couldn't move until the final second it stops where people actually have to get off just to let you off. I don't see how it's going to work where you're forced to swipe your card along with another 30 people along with another 30 people getting on. I'm sure it can happen but isn't the point of "improvement" to actually improve? Not just to look and sound better?

Exactly the point I was making earlier, another one agrees.

Technically yes you do but in reality who is going to force you to touch on with such a packed tram. I highly doubt I will be. When I get to Flinders to go home I will then "touch on" and myki won't have any idea that I caught the tram.

But if you scanned it on the way on (when maybe it isn't as full) you will want to make sure you do on the way off.

A Myki spokeswoman was just on ABC local radio. A woman rang up asking about how you could check your balance. One of the options was that the Myki readers will display your current account balance. So imagine if one or two people getting off want to spend an extra second to see their display as they swipe off!

In my opinion, no way will a crowd of people getting off a tram post-Myki will take the exact same time as a crowd of people getting off pre-Myki.

(For those wanting a portable and immediate way to check your balance, if you have an iPhone, I would recommend looking at the Consume application by the Australian developer Bjango [see below].)

^^ Ugh. I'm studying this year. I can't believe that you have to jump through so many hoops to get concessions when dole bludgers can just flash their healthcare card, no photo or nothing. Plus they get more money on newstart than austudy. ****ing ****ing

It takes about five minutes to fill out and submit a student public transport concession form, if that.

Yeah but dole bludgers don't have to fill out any forms, or pay a yearly fee. Does the fee cover your tickets for the year, or is it just for the privilege of buying a concession ticket? If it's the former then fine, but I still find it a bit rough that students are expected to come up with $400 up front, I know I'm going to struggle with it after paying fe's, buying equipment and text books etc.

EDIT

but it's an absolute whore lining up for 40 minutes waiting to get your tertiary institution stamp

For real? Yeah, you have to get photos notarised by a JoP too, yeah? All up sounds like a lot more than five minutes. Plus, my new, free myki card is going to be absolutely useless in a couple of months time, going to have to fork out for a new one of them too.

At University of Melbourne they send you the form already filled out and stamped, I didn't realise others didn't do the same.

It's about $10. It was steep up until 2004 for tertiary students but since then a token amount only (unless it is has changed for 2010 and I do not realise).

Question: I've been interstate/ out of town lately and have missed a bit of info about this myki (crap?). Anyway, I have a 5 times daily weekend pass. I've used it once.. still got 4 left. When the metcard system is totally withdrawn, what then.. i just lose those trips???

And should I just register now for a myki card now while its free...

Complete utter bullshit that charge was. Of course I was at uni 1998-2000, so I got stiffed with that ridiculous amount.

Yeah luckily I only had to pay one year of that. Boggled the mind. Overall probably cost more for me with the concession card than if I had paid adult all year.

The form quoted above says $400 dollars, but be buggered if I know tbh, and I'll be at TAFE if that makes any difference? Again, be buggered if I know. When I find out you guys will be the first to hear my wrath, no doubt ;)

But, again, do you know if the fee pays for your tickets, or just the privelege of buying concession priced tickets?

It quotes $410 for a yearly Victorian Student Pass, allowing unlimited travel on all trains, trams and buses operating wholly within Victoria. It is $9 for the concession card.

I assume the Student Pass turns out to be a lot cheaper than paying a daily travel fare every day of the year for most, even on concession prices.
