Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

And it never surprises me that supporters/clubs dont rate a player and expect to get a valuable draft pick.;)

As for supporters, on Houli you have a fair chunk that rate him very highly. I presume that lot would argue he is worth pick 30 outright. And as for the club, I think they've backed up the fact they rate him a required player, by trying to convince him to stay, by stating we would only be taking 3 picks in the draft and de listing 3 other players, and by not giving him up just so that we get something in return.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I have saiid for a few weeks but I can seriously see one of Prestia, Parker, Conca, Green, Hallahan sliding to our second pick.

Then again, we could potentially go for a ruckmen and select highly rated Tom Hickey or even Lycett (if he falls through to pick 30).
Yep, its very safe to say that at least 1 of the top 30 players should fall to our 2nd pick ;)

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Wish we could get Gaff. But unlikely, won't slip past 5 now that Brisbane's got that pick. hopefully we get Caddy/Atley/Smith

I agree that the the club has done everything within their power to keep Houli at Essendon.

Posters in this thread weren't arguing that Houli was worth Pick 29 - but arguing that because EFC only wanted to use 3 picks that we had to accept 29.

Most sane people realise that Pick 29 is too high for Houli.

Way too high outright, but with the pick downgrade it depends on the draft if it is close to being reasonable. They would receive Houli, and not have to take a fifth or sixth rounder for the expense of swapping early 2nd for early 3rd round picks.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Has Andrew Gaff ever lifted a weight?

Shows he has even more potential development.

Thats article doesnt show that we are too keen with Caddy. I would hope that we at least rate him as high as Atley. It seems if Gaff, Heppell are gone and Atley is still available we will take him. Everything seems to be pointing towards him. Good to see that we rate Heppell and is at the top of our pecking order.

@HFF in me saying im not to sure on Hallahan, means i wouldnt really want him at pick 30, i dont particularly rate him that high. His kicks seem to be blastered away, will be a decent inside midfielder, but i think hes too similar to Howlett.

I would prefer a fast player with some height to be drafted rather than inside player who is going to help Watson out. Howlett is a hard nut, Melksham will develop into a clearance player and Myers, Colyer have the potential to win plenty of clearances. I dont understand, but the thing we lack in our midfield is SPEED.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Lloyd mentors GAFF at the AIS Academy.

I am certain that EFC is well aware of his ability but doubt he will be available at Pick 8.

Nearly a certainty for the WC at pick 4.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Tony Notte board.

Exactly.

Why are there so many kids built like rakes?

I'm not saying he won't be a good player. However, something is weird to me that he's months away from becoming a professional footballer and he looks like he's never even seen a barbell let alone lifted one.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

The players I suggested are probably ones that may have attracted a top 30 pick (be it with a package deal), who would you suggest would be valued, if a top 30 pick was on the table?
Only disappointment was that Freo and the Pies were able to use the GC pre-listing so darn well and we didn't. If we could have tied up a Duscher or someone, I would have been pretty happy.
But, again, you can't force clubs to rate players you don't rate, and you can't force clubs to trade.
I suspect (and hope) we'll be in a much better position next year, with a slightly more positive (consistent) year.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Ben Jacobs, gee he looks the goods and was it right he had 47 posses against SA one of the best teams in the state 18's? Thats an unheard of performance and he also shows that he has one of the best kicks in the draft and also posseses versatility and a very good mark. From what ive seen this guy should be a top 10 pick, why is he rated so low?? If hes at 30 i hope we wouldnt pass. Looks a gem.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Would not be against picking up Beau Muston in Atkinson's spot. Good size, little bit of talent, kicks it OK, reasonably hard, finally found a bit of a niche as that defensive forward. Has taken a while to settle in.
IMHO a better prospect than Crameri or Quinn.

Have he and Dowler been delisted? Muston would be a good get if we could get him cheap. It would allow Monfries to be more attacking up there.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Oh My God !

Muston is a worse footballer than Houli.

Muston as a replacement for Atkinson.

Is there a problem drafting a a young player from the under 18's.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

He'd still be better than Quinn!

High draft pick vs an International Rookie.

You would hope so.

Agreed. I don't understand the fascination some people have with picking up other teams garbage.

Never said that, but at the same time not all delisted players are rubbish. It is why I was not against putting someone like Daniel O'Keefe on the rookie list last year. You don't go from a top 15-30 pick to a dud in 4 years.

But he has gone to junk.

Cant recall Sydney delisting a first round draft pick who has proven them wrong.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

David Rodan says hi. One teams junk is another teams treasure

David Rodan had done lots more that Beau Muston.

Didn't Muston kick 3 goals on Fletcher this year? Terrible footballer? No. Injury-ravaged? Yes. He's a better option than most other players who are chosen toward the end of the rookie draft. He's a much better footballer than Crameri for instance.
