Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I guess he must be thinking one of Polec or Gorringe will be available.

I think GC really want Gorringe but arnt prepared to take him at 7. I think they must really want someone else there.

Maybe its a big bluff for the GC to take Gorringe to leave us Atley???

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I'm pretty sure they interview more than just first round picks.
They might have a few WA kids lined up for the PSD, Greg Inglis, 2nd round picks etc, who knows.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Just watched the BomberTV interview of the Bomber appointment and Hirdy was on an "interstate" draft commitment regarding next week's early picks. Only thing I can think of would be to talk to possible candidates - ie. Gorringe, Atley and Caddy etc are all Vic boys..

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Whilst that presser was going, i found an interesting thing.
Hirdy was interstate interviewing someone regarding our early draft choice!!
All things probably pointing toward one of the SA boys, (whichever slides)

Looks possibile to be Gorringe or possibily Polec or Smith!

I cant think of any other interstate players we may be looking at..

On top of that he was at training this morn so i doubt he is in perth?

Maybe they got the mail that Brisbane are strongly linked to Heppell or Gaff, so they've run off to speak with Polec? :p

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I wouldn't.

He should be busy enough trying to implement his game plan with the group he already has. I would hope that any time he spends interviewing prospects is only with the guys we are really keen on, and that Dodoro/Keane can sort them out from the rest.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

He could be going to some of the picks he hopes to pick up later in the draft now just our first pick.

My tip would be he would also be checking out some mature agers over there:)

was in Albury/Wodonga talking with Shaun Atley.

Albury is technically 'interstate'.

I was being facetious.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Neagle is exactly that.

2010 was the first pre-season he was able to complete, and even then (from memory) it wasn't until after Christmas.

And let the mediocrity continue if we delist Neagle and then rookie him.

When will it end.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

how do you know this?

I am fairly certain that Bourky works as a journalist at one of the local newspapers.

And John Butcher is his favorite newspaper.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Rookie list = application of Julius Marlow to gluteus maximus.
He's a much better shot to make it now, IMHO, if he's not fit at any single point next year they won't even hesitate.
The old looney tunes style piano hanging on a wire above his head.

btw he was contracted, so it was either rookie list him or pay out his entire deal. I don't think we'll find too many more talented forwards down the tail end of the rookie list.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Atley's kicking is pretty good, no worse than Melksham really. He is not Swallow-like, but no-one is. Reality is the midfielders from Heppell, Gaff, Altley, Polec, Smith are all very close, throw in Pretia as well. My preference is Polec but the Tigers won't pass on him at 6. Atley is my 2nd preference.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I thought Gaff was pretty close to Swallow?

From what I've read, he's as good a bet as Scully was last year.

Gaff is a solid midfielder, West Coast will do well picking him at 4, tested a bit better than I thought as well. However, he won't be Tom Scully.

Melksham's kicking is poor.

I just look at vision of Atley on AFL.com.au. Terrible kicking action. He's not going to be able to consistently hit a target kicking with his action.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I feel the action is something you can work on. It is more the fact that he goes for the low percentage option. He doesn't have a bad kicking technique, but needs to work on his option taking. Melksham is not that bad by foot, just suffered after coming back from injury.

Lets be honest the true gun mids are Swallow (the best one we have seen probably since the Hodge/Judd draft), Bennell (not completely sold), Gaff (solid both ways), and Heppell (HBF/midfielder with great footskills). The rest of them you can throw a blanket over them. Polec is probably the best of the lot on potential, as he has that bursting speed. Brodie Smith has some Judd-like qualities but regularly misses targets. Then you have Atley, Prestia, etc.

My order or preference is:

1. Polec (hope like hell the Tigers have Buddy disease and take Lynch)
2. Atley
3. Caddy
4. Smith

But 2,3, and 4 could easily be interchanged.

Nient.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

We need great kicks to come to the club. Probably our biggest issue is lack of skill - a bigger issue than our midfield!

Well, if true to form, with Thompson and McCarttney on board, The ability to kick the ball will become the utmost priority in recruiting and teaching. Just like at Geelong. I am sure Hird is on the sam page on this.
