Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

He'll be pre-listed, but I'd be happy to trade a very late pick for him.

Im pretty sure i read that the GC arent going to pre-list him and that Campbell was hopeful that another club would take the chance on him.

Hope we draft my mates brother Patrick Karnezis. Dominated for Oakleigh this year.

Howlett seems to get forgotten fairly quickly, too.

In my opinion he'll at least reach the levels of somebody like Chance Bateman.

Good call on Howlett.

Need to find a way to get him a bit more outside so he can use his foot skills.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Think most are misrepresenting Bombers No 1.

No 1 is saying that with our midfield problems, it is essential to get a midfielder at Pick 8.

Whether the midfielder becomes elite is irrelevant - but it is guaranteed that you should get a very good player - That will add to our midfield.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

haha, lol
What?

I think it was a very fair point that made sense.

Ablett started out as a forward and probably showed a bit more that Zaha, but wasn't expected to move into the midfield and have the impact that he did. Why couldn't Zaha move into the midfield and develop similarly?

Pretty much. The more midfielders you pick first round, the more likely you will snare the gold nugget in amongst the bunch, that might be a Lenny Hayes type.

Or a Bartell or a Giansiracusa..

God if we pick Gorringe I think there is going to be a riot!

And the maligned Giansiracusa finished 3rd in the Bulldogs B and F.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I've been thinking if we can't get one of the mids we really rate what about darling. Now i've only seen YouTube clips and read a few phathom drafts and his profile on the afl website but he said for afl he might try and become more of a midfielder. Now I know alot of people are only keen on pure mids but this kid seems to have a fair bit of talent.

So anyway of u guys that are in the known what are your views on him and could he become the next pav???!!!!! Or should we stay right away and go for a pure mid thanks in advance.

I think that if u want a risk/reward pick that isn't a pure midfielder - that Darling is the man.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Thanks guys and I also forgot to ask did he play much midfield at all in the wafl or 18 champs

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Darling i see more as a CHF but i played with him and ge can certainly go into the middle. Hasnt played that much good footy in the middle around the ages of 16-18. However in his junior days was a midfielder. He has a massive tank and could be a similar player to Chapman. Was probably rated a top 3 pick at the start of the year, so he has talent and potential.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Anyone know anything about Joel Wilkinson I believe hes a nigerian Ql boy (could be wrong). Can the boy play footy because he is one hell of an athlete? Only 2 years playing the game.

#8 Shaun Atley/Josh Caddy

Possible Tasmainan bias.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Have updated my 'wish list' for the upcoming draft.

Would be stoked to see this come draft day (but seriously doubt that it will happen):

Pick 8. I have wavered a little bit on my liking of Brodie Smith, only because I wished that I could have a) seen him live in action against men in the SANFL, and b) wished that he would be given more midfield time in the SANFL seniors, in saying that, if we picked him up at 8 I would e absolutely ecstatic, looks like a player we are so in desperate need of. A little suspicious but he reminds me a little bit of Jaco Surjan (Port Adelaide) in the way he goes about his footy?

At pick 8, I am starting to seriously consider Josh Caddy here, again, the exact type of player we need. Someone who can run all day (3km time trial: 10.33, = 8th overall/ beep test, shuttle run: level 14 shuttle 9, 9th overall), whilst he has proven he has "clean hands" with Josh topping the charts (with Dyson Heppell) with 93% (28/30). His highlights that I have seen shows him being a bullocking workhorse in the midfield who can hustle and bustle his way through a pack. His ability to go forward and kick goals makes him an even more attractive proposition, he averaged nearly 2 goals a game in his time with the Knights this year. He states on the AFL profile "I think my ability to win the footy at stoppages is a real strength, and also my work ethic and marking" shows some real positives for us to work with.

The last player I would love for Essendon to get is Luke Parker, after carefully considering all the players that may be available at pick 8 (I am assuming that Shaun Atley, Andrew Gaff and the two forementioned are gone).

Parker is a small clarance machine who from reports has had a somewhat indifferent year with Dandenong. He is a goal kicker who has been changed around a little this year and has been tried in several spots throughout season 2010. He may even get the nod ahead of Caddy for my wishlist as he "does the inside well and the outside well" (Thunderstruck from the BigFooty phantom draft).

If we landed one of these guys at pick 8 I would be stoked, if we didn't land one of these guys at pick 8, hope that it is a midfielder and I will still be stoked.

Pick 30: I have mentioned his name a few times but I would love to see Mitch Hallahan slide to us at pick 30, he would be an absolute steal here. An inside midfielder who reads the game well and disposes of it pretty well. Hallahan is a leader (which I rate very highly in a person) and someone who does all the team things as well averaging nearly 4 tackles a game whilst with the Stingrays. He is another clearance player who when not in possesion I can see doing the team things like blocks, sheppards and tackles for his team mates.

If Hallahan is gone by pick 30, I would be ecstatic if we picked up Alex Fasolo. Alex I have re assesed where he should be at and I would be stoked if we picked him up. He is able to play both inside and out and has quality skills and is relatively good overhead. He has already played some senior football at East Fremantle which shows his dedication to his game.

Last but not least, one player who has caught my attention and has been a favorite of mine since the early days has been Sam Crocker. Now Sam is more of a flanker type but he could become a very damaging one at that. A good all round game who has a good work ethic, and has that uncanny ability to play anywhere that is required and has good skills to match. Sam is a left footer who makes good decisions and is one that I am eager to see where he ends up at draft time.

Some other players that I would e happy enough to accept at 30 would be Reece Conca, Cameron Gutherie or Andrew Young.

Pick 47: I have always liked this kid and have no idea why he is not rated more higher on here than he is but any ways, another Stingray by the name of Jake Bachelor. Jake is not a midfielder but he could certainly become one, he has been used as a rebounding half backmen in his time with Dandenong and even won the Best and Fairest (outpointing some more highly fancied names). Jake has good skills and reads the game really well, he is still skinny but expect him to bulk up. He is a good mark from opposition kicks and takes the game on.

I am going to shy away from midfielders/small players and have a look at one of the more highly fancied ruckmen in the draft.

Tom Hickey is one player who has surprised many on here and one who may be slected earlier than what he may currently be worth. He has developed rapidly since crossing from volley ball but his development has been rapid. His ruckwork it self has been impressive from all reports and his knowledge of the game of AFL (despite only taking it up in '09) is top class in knowing where to run, skill wise and could even be given an opportunity up forward. One I would like to see at Essendon (Snoop Dog in the mock draft is very excited about him).

Other players I personally like to see Essendon select here could be Viv Michie (utility midfielder), Daniel Farmer (Midfielder) or even go down a mature aged path and select an Ed Curnow (Inside midfielder) or a Myles Sewell (Classy inside/outside midfielder).

Pick 64: Ben Howlett upgrade

Rookie selection 1: Some highly fancied ruckmen may fall through to the rookie draft and will be snaffled fairly quickly I would assume, so I would love to see Leif Cope snared with our first pick in the rookie draft.

Cope is an imprved ruckmen from the Eastern Ranges who would be a good prospect to work with as he has a terrific attitude to the work ethic that is required to make it at AFL level, he is quite tall (203cm) for a young fella but has some size about him (96kg already).

He seems to have the tools to work with and could work out quite nicely for us if we were to rookie him.

A player that I think should be rated a little higher than he is is young Adam Marcon, again I am just throwing names out there as I think he may be taken but gee you have got to like what he puts out on the park. Is a ball winner who puts his head over it despite his size and disposes of it relatively well. He is versatile in that he can play forward and kick multiple goals whilst he could also move down back and do a shut down job on an opposition player. Some tools to work with here.

Rookie Selection 2: I went along and watched the "Young Guns Game" a few weeks ago and a couple of kids impressed me a lot. One of which was small forward Jamie Elliot. Didn't get a lot of it, maybe 15 times max (and that is being generous) but he ended the game with 4 opportunist goals and his name rising up the ranks of some recruiters boards I would imagine. Elliot is quick and loves the hard stuff (highlighet by 3.3 tackles per game in the TAC Cup) and is a goal kicker (one bag of 6, one of 4, 3 games goal less) whilst his skills are adequate enough. The only down side to Elliot is his size, and that little amount he has of him. At a mere 175cm and 76kg his tackles may struggle to stick.

I think we could look at a couple of mature agers with these rookie picks and one name who I have not wavered from is Michale Stockdale from the Casey Scorpions. Stockdale is a small defender who reads the game well and has good skills to match his ball winning ability. His pace is super and this year (pre injury) saw him move from his accustom lock down role to a more free wheeling rebounding player which shows he is able to do both.

Another player who I really like the look of and yet another mature aged prospect is Luke Potts, yes I have mentioned him before but he just seems to show everything we need in a midfielder and could possibly play round 1 2011. Here is wha I wrote when he played in the "young guns game back in September

2. Luke Potts, 183cm, 80kg, 20/21, Midfielder, Frankston Dolphins (VFL)

Young Dolphin Luke Potts was given the captaincy duties by coach David Loader and did not disappoint. He uses the ball so well and is a really strong all round midfield prospect with him having purple patches as both an inside midfielder and as an outsider runner. He kept his feet really well and often, when tackled, managed to get the ball away via hand or foot. When he was on the outside he is a gut running player, similar to Hawk Chance Bateman. He has a very good side step and is very quick in the clinches, expect him to have risen up the rankings of recruiters after today's game. Would love to see him at Essendon as a young developing midfielder, certainly has all the tools to work with IMO.

Rookie Selection 3: A ruckmen if we have not already selected one could be young Frankston ruckmen Russell Gabriel who has (reportedly) grown to that magical 200cm mark and put him right into calculations for an AFL listing. Here is what I had to say about Russell in the young guns game also:

15. Russell Gabriel, 200cm, 100kg, 21/22, Ruckmen, Frankston Dolphins (VFL)

Gabriel was the dominant big man on the ground, his tap work opposed the young Tom Campbell gave the red team first use of the ball. His second efforts after the ruck contest was first rate as well and was not afraid to put his body in hard against the smaller guys either. He was very good around the ground, and was very good as a link up man for the red team. A feature of his game was his pack marking and took several of these throughout the game. He used the ball relatively well.

Not sure on what else could be left to be honest at this late stage of the draft. Wouldn't mind seeing some clean out of the rookie list, but not sure Hird has it in him to actually do it, Crameri, Marigliani both good VFL players but both showed that there is actually a big step up to the AFL (particularly Crameri).

Any ways guys, that is all from me, feel free to discuss this in more detail and to throw up your own names you would like to see at Essendon in 2011.

Thanks guys

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Great analysis there HFF. Noticed that ant reciprocates your thoughts on Luke Parker.

Really like the kid. No nonsense type who seems to be really strong over-head mark.

Would it be fair to say that he is a Jack Ziebell (minus the kicking penetration) with a bit of Bartel's marking prowess?

Could easily see him becoming the 'Dangerfield' of this year, sneaking into the top 10.

Ant and I have actually kept in contact and have discussed Parker's game a hell of a lot. He pointed out little details that I had missed and I began to notice that "hey, he is a genuinely good player that is having a down year" and that I suppose curbed my desire for Parker at pick 8.

In describing the type of player he is, he is certainly a Bartell type.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

What if Heppell is still available HFF?? would you take him ahead of Caddy and Smith.

Like the look of Parker, unsure where he is expected to go, but would love him to slip to our 2nd rounder, although that seems unlikely. I would like Conca or even Newton at that 2nd round pick.
