Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

FFS bno1. We have our Jimmy Bartel. He wears the #4 and is captain of the Essendon Football Club. His name's Jobe Watson, son of the Legendary Tim Watson. perhaps you've heard of him? Anyway, what we need is an Andrew Lovett type player who breaks the lines, with a heap of skill and poise. That's who we missed dearly this year. And to a lesser extent, a HB who sets up play well. Although, I do hope one Anthony Long fills that void.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Possibly becuase our midfield is D grade at best, and we need to find that Jimmy Bartel pick 8 type of player to help our midfield. Our ruck stocks are fine. Add a VFL ruck or get Lycett in the 2nd round if available.

Really, D grade at best?
Good luck with that Bombersnolast.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Am I wrong in saying that Essendon must delist 1 more player if they're to take 3 picks in the ND and 1 in the PSD?

You are correct, and that player is most likely Houli.

Bartel is better than Watson, one has a Brownlow, one doesn't. That is not a mark against Watson. Bartel is elite, Watson is A Grade. There is a difefrence. Bartel is better in marking contests and with his kicking skills.

The whole point is that the more midfielders you take the more likely you will find a gem inside them. We are already too top heavy, we don't need more tall timber when we already cannot fit them into the side and we have Joe Daniher coming who is another tall!

We do need a few outside mids in the Lovett mould, but possibly with less of a meathead ability to screw up footy clubs.

Yes, we have Watson and who else? Myers hasn't played in the midfield, Winderlich is inconsistent, and Stanton struggles to deal with tags. I ask you this except Watson (and Luke Ball basically does his role) would any make the Collingwood midfield? C-D grade is where our midfield is. Whilst Collingwood went and got Beams, Sidebottom, we over-filled our list with talls.

not saying I think jobe's better, but that's terrible reasoning.

Judd was better than swan this year, was he?

with the two corresponding picks, we got Hurley and zaharakis.

Toss a coin on which two you'd prefer. A tually no I'd take the equal of the midfielder and the key defender/forward who's already just as good.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Way to much bias towards essendon here.

Bartel >>>>>>>>>>> Watson. Brownlows can be an indication, good players dont win brownlows. But i would dare say AA is a fair indication and by simply watching him play you would not hes neck and head above Watson. Also Bartel is Geelongs 3rd best midfielder not there best. Having said that, Watson needs to be admired since being captained, has been the only player to improve himself into an A grader for the role he plays. You wouldnt want more than one of him.

Beams did have some shocking GF performances but you cant base his ability on 2 games. Have a look at his first 2 seasons. Beams >>>> Zaha, but i think Zaha has probobaly more upside and i think should be thrown onball from the get go next year. We need to advance his development and try and turn him into a gun as quick as possible. Id probably still prefer Beams over Zaha, but Hurley well over Sidey due to KP factor, they dont grow on trees and he can play both ends. Hurley + Zaha vs Sidey and Beams is pretty even, id prefer our 2 just. Thats for good reason we had higher picks!

Id also be happy if we took B.Jacobs at pick 8. Now alot might not like this, but he could become a true gun, Hodge like. Can also be used as a HBF and very much develop into a midfielder. His 47 posses against SA shows hes already a midfielder. Has excellent foot skills aswell. Most people have him going 15-25 hes a steal at those picks.

Everything is pointing to Prestia being drafted top 12 or so. So the rumour could very much be true.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Ovverated maybe but these are the sort of midfielders we need. Beams is an accumulator and we are yet to really find one with our 2nd rounders for a while, although Colyer looks a lively type. I would love to draft a Beams-like player at 30 this year.

I'd rather take Prestia than take Jacobs. Gosh I do not like this fascination of drafting HBF's come midfielders. Jacobs was good in that game, but has played more in the backline. We already have too many flankers at both ends of the field. Plus I do feel you are well and truly over pricing Jacobs. Is he really worth a top 10 pick? I really don't feel he is. If we had a pick in the 20's he might be worth it at that range. I hate taking players earlier than they are worth, usually it comes back to bit you on the backside!

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Just like how Adelaide picked up Dangerfield that year?

Yeah, of course, taking players 'earlier' is definitely a bad strategy.

Idiot.

There seems to be some bloody good midfielders in this draft, I can't get past Caddy and Smith. Please note I haven't seen a great deal of anyone.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

I thought I'd taken him into account. From the primary list, T Slattery, J Laycock, M Still and B Houli. Added to primary list, B Howlett.

Am I missing something?

Is Hille a vet?

I'm stumped now.

Dangerfield was always a first round pick. Adelaide went a little early BUT not that early. We are talking taking someone at 8 when he will likely go in the 2nd round.

What so zaharakis is no good?? I personal think we have nailed our second rounders lately... Last 3 years: colyer, Carlisle, zaharakis, pears... Need I go on?

We probably do need a grade kids, but who says bird won't get a bit more out of what we have? Plus they're another year older...
Wait for some break out seasons next yr.. I'll laugh so hard if we take gorringe!! I just wish I could see the look on your face if we do!!

Beams is better than Zaharakis, he accumulates the ball better and uses it better.

I just don't feel with the exception of Watson we have an A Grade midfielder on our list. If we take Gorringe that will just about do it for me. I will hope we lose most games so we get a priority pick the following year. A midfielder will win more games than a ruckman. I hope Gold Coast take the tall bloke at 7.

Beams is playing in a better side than Zaharakis... gets fed the ball easier...

We will see who turns out to be the better player...

Stop talking about A grade midfielders... Pick 8 doesnt guarantee one.. As soon as we take a mid with pick 8 you will be raving on like a moron again, bitching and whinging that he isnt A grade within a season or 2...

I hope we take Gorringe, if that means it stops you supporting the club.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Hardly, I will give pick 8 a chance regardless, so long as that pick is a midfielder. I would rather take Prestia early than go stupid and take a ruckman for no reason whatsoever when you can trade for a ruckman when you are in your window.

Re: National Draft / Rookie Draft Strategy (No Trade Talk)

Not an elite one. You need to draft these midfielders. The recruiters are there to pick the gems from the duds. Mind you our recruitment team decided to overlook Barlow for some reason.

Didn't the recruiters want Barlow, but Knights went for Hardingham instead?
