stevebbb you've mentioned several times that DeGoey won't get enough midfield minutes once the real stuff starts and will only average 78-82, but it looks like the coach is starting to come around....

----
"MIDFIELD spots are hard to win at Collingwood, such is the array of on-ball depth on its list.

But Jordan De Goey has undoubtedly won his position, to the point where Magpies coach Nathan Buckley can no longer hold him back.

Whispers of the 20-year-old’s stunning pre-season at the Pies came to fruition on Friday night, with De Goey among Collingwood’s best four-quarter performers during its entertaining NAB Challenge win over Geelong at Simonds Stadium.

With Scott Pendlebury and Adam Treloar on the sidelines and Dane Swan playing predominantly inside forward 50, Buckley let De Goey loose in the middle of the ground, with the first-round pick attending a game-high 27 centre bounces.

And the nuggety yet classy young jet didn’t let his coach down, finishing with 24 disposals, 11 contested possessions, five clearances, six tackles and seven inside 50s. Most impressively, he had a game-high 657 metres gained.

After a scintillating pre-season, Buckley said he has been left with no choice but to throw De Goey in the guts more often.

“He mainly played as a high half-forward (in 2015), but you just can’t deny him that midfield time,” Buckley said.

“He’s really strong in the contests, he’s spreading and understanding transition better and he just has a knack of finding the ball.”

Sure DeGoey will get MORE mid time, but he's not going to be at every center clearance. We're talking SC related, he's worth $318,400, that's a big investment, I'm assuming if you're considering him you're expecting him to breakout and be a keeper?

Swan averaged 5.8 clearances a game last season, 24th overall in the AFL and the highest ranked Collingwood player for clearances. Sure he's going to spend a lot of time forward, but he isn't going to disappear, our best clearance player from last year is definitely still going to get some mid time. Then we have Pendles, Adams, Treloar, Sidey, Crisp and Greenwood. Varcoe gets time on the wing and Blair (if he plays) sometimes get thrown in the middle.

So that's 8 pure midfielders in our best 22, add that to the interchange cap, we're going to rotate in the middle so much.

Anyway it all depends on what you want out of him. As a Pies supporter, I'm wrapped, kid is a gun and the best player we've recruited since Pendles. He'll be a future SP mid in a few years. SC wise, I don't think he's worth the risk, there are better mid price options (Libba and BCrouch) and some great high price cash (Mills and Simpkin).

Varcoe and Blair aren't even worth mentioning. Just because they spend some time in the midfield doesn't make them such.

Have you stopped to consider than DeGoey will leap frog some starting mids this year and possibly even before Rd1 as far as midfield minutes go? I'm looking at Greenwood and Crisp in particular.

Also much like Patty Cripps and Sam Gray playing in the forward pocket early last year, because more established players had the permanent midfield spots didn't do so well, but once moved to the midfield showed that they are better in the engine room than some of the established mids and offer more to the team playing there.

Swan, Pendles, Adams, Sidey, Blair as all capable forwards as well as midfielders, maybe Crisp as well, where as DeGoey didn't show much as a forward so maybe* he will be given a predominately midfield role sooner than later, because he offers more to the team in that position than he does playing forward?

As for Swan, he won a lot of contested possession in the forward half last year, so no reason not to play him there even more this year, especially since the Pies lack forward fire-power.

And Swan loves a sausage roll more thrn tge next bloke. Will kick 35+ if he plays mostly forward.

Exactly, Pies midfield runs pretty deep now so as much as Swan is a solid contested possession winner, he's of even more value to his team in the forward line.

Looking at it from a SC scoring perspective, I just don't see him going big as we have too many accumulators.

I'm done arguing, I don't care enough about the topic. If DeGoey kills it, I'm happy, means he's developing quicker and we're closer to a flag.

There are good points for and against. At the end of the season one of us can say "I told you so" :)

Blues vs Bombers;

So many cash cows to watch!!! :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

All my potential backline rookies will be on show lol

ps. I had a dream McDonald-Tipungwuti kills it and becomes the Saad of 2016
(we need to shorten his name, how about... AMT? McT? Tipu? Wuti?)

Only early days, and they are only playing Carlton, but essendon's top ups may be a bit better than I expected.

Terry Wallace some good insights on the rookies
match centre radio.
Looking down the stats when you see N/A, it's Sam Michael. (not entered into their database yet?)

Im predicting Mitch Brown to be one of the last rookies to leave most people's teams. Looks like he is gonna get decent scores most games, and probably play every week bar injury-I bet he hits 400K around round 10 and then floats there for the rest of the year while people deal with injuries and bubble players.
Against most teams he'll actually have a fwd line to man up against.

Wouldn't expect scoring like what we've seen in this qtr very often.
