Without looking at the stats I think Kreuezer probably had the edsge but Billy contended admirably, got around the ground and generally looked far and beyond a 2nd year ruck.
Got involved in the linking play with the other mids on occasion. Very nice to see.

Try to fit Hendospud into our back line.

I double dare you.

Nah, Merrett is so overrated. Would easily take the unproven superstar Henderson. Difference between us being a top 8 side. Have you not read up about Voss's catastrophic 2009 season when we traded away our future?

I didn't expect that fella's.
Well done that was a great performance preseason game or not:thumbsu:

Goodluck this year the new generation of Lion's are looking good.

Well. Hey? Hey?
Yeah, that's right.

The boys showed what they have been working hard for, for the last 12 months early on then lost their shit a bit when Carlton kicked it up a gear. Delightfully though, where that might have been the end of them so often in the last year or so, they managed to find their composure at half time and forge ahead with a clear response. So many great performances that we could have had 4 or 5 Tuck Medal winners.
Unfortunately Ace looked down on confidence with the bigger game facing him. His second efforts that were lacking last year, whilst not absent tonight, were down on the last few weeks. He still went alright and I hope we keeep him in to see if he can just gain that confidence playing in the main comp.
Umpiring. HaHaHA. Doesn't matter how well you know the rules, you never know how a game will be umpired. Hard to attract new fans if they can't understand what's going on and when the players and supporters don't know, a newbie doesn't stand a chance. Imagine trying to explain to someone that we've been penalised for holding the ball but the next bloke isn't.
How many times were our boys tackled without the ball? The umpires were very obviously taken to task at half time. Shocking display.

Anyway, what a great game.:footy::thumbsu:

On a separate note, what the **** was this about Acorn not coming off the ground when instructed? Not being a team player is never going to go down well, especially if you haven't already kicked at least 3.

In his defense the ball was locked inside our F50 while he was being called to sub out, and he did get a shot on goal from staying on, as soon as there was a break in play (from his miss), he came off. It's also hard to kick anything well most long inside 50s (which we did a fair bit of) come into Brown, not to Ace.

Ace's weakness seems to be body contact, which is a big issue because most defenders are good at it. He didn't impact the score board, but to put body contact on a forward you have to run with them, its very hard to drop off Ace to double/tripple man Browny if one defender is committed to using his body against Ace full time.

So he is still doing his job, he controls a defender and even when he brings the defender to the contest he still stop that defender from influencing Brown, which is vital.

The good thing about him is if they stop respecting him IE letting the man drop off him early to 2/3 man Brown, he will take the mark and kick the goal. He's almost like an insurance policy for Browny. If they ignore him, or put their weakest defender on him, he'll boot goals. If they commit their second defender to him he controls them enough to give Browny an even footing and a better chance at kicking 5 goals.

The real questions are, can Bewick do that role better? Or offer more to the team by replacing Ace in the forward line? He certainly finds space better (because his defender abandons him to check Brown), and he's more versatile, which Ace just can't compete with.

I think Ace needs to set himself up to be ready to crumb for Brown (which he did a few times for Martin/Lisle/Michael/Leuy in earlier NAB cup games), rather than trying to offer a competing lead, because we will always kick to Brown over Ace if they're both offering 1 man out leads. This has the added advantage of keeping his defender further from the contest, or if his defender leaves him, gives him a free pick up and shot on goal.
