Prepare yourselves, to see the best method acting, of 2013.

I give to you, "The Fall", by Marc Murphy.

Reading on the Carlton forum you would believe that Golby (the sniping scum) hit Murphy in the adam's apple which is excruciatingly painful and could have caused major damage ... didn't know that Adam's apple was located on the chest ... oh and he does need some more acting classes because the place where he was hit and the place where he holds himself to deal with the agony are not actually the same ...

I didn't get see anything after the first q apart from the highlights but may I say seeing the boys get up makes me feel like the magician must have felt belting that ball into the crowd. There is something special about that kick, an image of joy and love for the game. Pure satisfaction. On the golby murphy incident (although obviously exaggerated) we must at least acknowledge that Golby was out of line and that it was an unnecessary and silly move and that despite the theatrics he probably does deserve punishment.

I am surprised it has taken so long for someone to say this. Piss poor, IMO. Deserves a holiday for an unprovoked, cowardly shot. Docherty gets his debut.

Yep. I bang on about it every year because it is one of the most frustrating aspects of the game as well as some responses to our free counts.
Whilst you could easily argue that not all frees against the Lions were there, I think we should concede that we give too many away.
But the frustrating part is the amount of frees not awarded to us. If the rules were applied equally, the free count would be more balanced. There were at least 5 instances where our player was tackled with the tackle being completed well after the ball was disposed, and no free. There were quite a number of softer ones paid the other way though.
If the count looks one sided, it is generally because they were paid that way.
So it is not the amount paid against us that irks, but the ones we don't get paid.
People are just much, much more aware when these things happen to their own team and pretty much brush it off and ignore when it happens to the opposition. Every supporter of every club genuinely feels their team gets a bad run with the umpires.

Watch the play just prior to Golby giving Murphy a little whack (32min of the 3rd quarter)

He laid a pretty good tackle on Murphy, can see Murphy wasn't too happy about the tackle, just about guarantee that he's retaliating. Further more why was that holding the ball for Illegal disposal basically threw it to Gibbs :p

So if you get better vision of that swinging arm heading down to Golby and it is shown to be 'provoked' in some fashion - does that mitigate what happens to you or do you just both go down for whatever it was that you did?

Golby was wrong to take a swing....but Murphy was also wrong for taking a dive, he wasn't hurt and it did not get him in the adams apple.

..as someone said earlier....definately not a good look for a captain, but also not a good look for our boy.

Golby deserves some type of punishment for what he done (most likely a reprimand) the action itself I personally don't deem to be too vicious but the fact Murphy is running away and not expecting it makes it a lot worse. From an AFL stand point its been played a few times and they wont want this to been seen as acceptable behaviour either.

I made my point more around the remarks of "Sniping Scum" from what I've seen of Golby he seems like a fair player, and the vision by itself doesn't do him total justice.

Being provoked doesn't mitigate his action either, its still unacceptable.

You have to be careful what you take as real out of the preseason cup, but...

*pause* Come on Gerard

...the old problems for Carlton were there on display

What about the other team Gerard!

It was a bit silly being behind the play and when Murphy wasn't watching, but Murphy made the most of it. It wasn't anything harder than you'd get during a game anyway, Golby was just giving him a bit of contact to let him know he won't take crap. Similar things probably happen 10 other times during the game but aren't picked up because the player didn't dive.

Free kick if it was caught during the game. Wasn't that hard, wasn't high, shouldn't get any time for it.

I would put what Golby did to the pressure of the day, good experience to play in a final. Not something I have seen in his game so a quiet word from Vossy during the week would be fine. I wonder what the doc report would say... Hmmmm nothing so move on, Murphy will hope this doesn't go to the tribunal, embarrassing.

I've always liked Offsiders but I've come to the realisation that it tries to spread itself too thin. When you have shows like On the Couch and 360 doing 1 hour of analysis for 1 code, 30 minutes to cover the entire Australian sporting landscape is virtually impossible to achieve with any sort of depth. As a result, you hear snippets about sports that you only have a passing interest in and the same for sports that you are geniunely interested in.

Some great panellists on there though.

Best case scenario would appear to be a reprimand ,on the basis outlined by TBD

Best case and most likely case too.

Can't see the contact being argued as anything other than body. Impact couldn't be more than low, surely. Doesn't give much scope for medium and high in other cases if that gets given more than low.

I heard Gerard on ABC radio yesterday afternoon giving his post-match review and he was, as you'd expect, complimentary about the Lions.

I think that the media reaction to our NAB Cup win has been pretty good, 360 tomorrow night should have a segment on the game and we should get also a mention on On the Couch for a change.

I really admire what Vossy is doing with a lot of these talented young Lions players. He is giving them much needed game time as well as fast tracking they're development for the future. The midfield is starting to gel together and show off some of it's potential. The Rockliff, Redden, Rich trio is going to be one hell of midfield brigade when they reach their peak and when you have Leuenberger back & fully fit from injury, palming the ball down to Rich and Co, followed by the outside run of Bewick and Zorko, it's going to be a scary proposition to face for the other team's.

The Lions depth this year is a lot stronger then some may have realized. A lot of good depth in the midfield and up forward, the backline looks quite settled as well. A few players like Cornelius, Yeo and Karnezis are knocking on the door for a spot in the team after some good pre-season form. Young players like Longer, Green, Bewick and Beams all look like very promsing players for the future.

Last season showed how competitive the Lions where at the Gabba after upset wins over top 4 rivals Adelaide and WC, with a few close losses as well. It could have come down to a lack of fitness, but is something the Lions have worked on this pre-season as most of your players like a lot fitter. It won't be easy for any interstate teams making the trip to the Gabba and playing a Lions side at near full strength.

I just want to say good luck for 2013 season I reckon the Lions could sneak into the top 8 with a bit of luck going there way. :)
