Despite enjoying his best pre-season in years, co-captain Jonathan Brown will not run out against Essendon in Brisbane's NAB Cup opener on the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

Brown was set to play a recent intra-club fixture in Brisbane but it was washed out.

However, the reigning Coleman Medal winner will play at least two pre-season games.

"He'll definitely play (in the pre-season), but because he's had trouble getting through seasons, we won't try and get the four NAB Cup games under his belt," Matthews said.

"He'll probably only play the two of them. He's fit and well, but we think he's only going to play the third and fourth week in preparation for the season."

It seems like we are going to go in with basically zero experience.

I actually thought Knights would go in trying to win as many games as possible.

In the past Essendon has showed that when they perform in the NAB cup they perform in the H&A season so it would be good to atleast go in with a half decent side.

If Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher, Stanton and McVeigh don't play we will not win. It doesn't matter who misses for Brisbane, we don't have the depth that they do.
