NAB Cup Rd. 1: Hawthorn v. Melbourne

I know it's just a NAB cup game and I am not trying to stick the boot in..... but how did that happen?

You guys looked the goods and played a very solid 3 quarters of footy.

we changed the forward structure in the last quarter. took Bate out of the goalsquare and replaced him with Sylvia and Newton. Suddenly we looked completely hopeless going into the forward 50 and struggled to get it deep. so instead of Hawthorn rebounding from deep in defensive 50 they were rebounding from the defensive side of the centre square.

and everything went to hell

Sorry I was just expressing my shock out loud, really unlucky for Melbourne.

Hmmmmm hopefully you guys pull it all together a little more this year, certainly showed alot more in your 1st NAB cup match than we did (that said we were missing/limited game time for quite a few key players).

Still the actual season hasn't started yet and there are quite a few positives you can take away from today's match.

Hawthorn were down many great players but we still had our best forward out(Robbo), best defender (Rivers), best HBF'er (Wheatley), one of our best midfielders (Moloney) and our best tap ruckmen (Jamar). Edit: Also missing Buckley.

We still have Watts, Blease, Strauss, Bennel and Jetta to come who will provide many exciting times this year.

Bring on the season....

Maybe as one of the few people that didn't actually get to see the match (due to work), I can offer some words.

As disappointing as the result is (and I would have been breaking windows had I watched it), we have to remember it is only the NAB Cup. This time last year we got destroyed by Geelong. 12 months later we've almost pinched a win against Hawthorn, plus we've got a much fitter and younger list. From an on-field perspective, things are looking brighter than last year already.

Didn't get to see the game. Turned on the radio for the last 15 minutes - Melbourne up by 15!

.. Ah well, as shattering as the loss is (Roughead ), in the end we lost to the reigning premiers by less than a kick. Bring on the season, go Dees.

i didnt mean you personally have something against bartram but plenty of people on bf like rip into him a bit. i dont think he has kicked that far, he definitley showed alot of promise today

I strongly agree with that comment he struggles to get any distance on his kicks. That kick from 50 wasnt to convincing either lucky no one was on the goal line. Melbourne have numerous players that struggle to kick 50. Wheatley and sylvia would be the go to men when kicking out side 50.

i really dont like him when he plays against melbourne but you have to admit, he is a good shot, anyone would want him on there team. i would rather him over buddy.

i have nothing against buddy, kicked 100 goals only 21, absolute champion, but i think roughead is a much better player, he is underrated. buddy can only mark if the ball is kicked to him, he doesnt run for it and he misses the easiest shots.

Dont know if this is the right place for this, and I hope you don't mind a Freo support posting here. I think Jake Spencer showed a lot of promise for you guys against Hawthorn. He did enough the show he will have a promising future after some more time in the VFL. I also think Grimes looks like a likely type

No probs mate hope you guys find a major sponser sooner rather than later, and have a good year except when you play us. After watching Hill play against Richmond I am so glad we took him over Rich. Rich seemed to be too much of a ball watcher for my liking.

I think you guys will be alright this year if a few of your 20-50 game players stand up. Someone needs to give Green some support

Why the **** did Bate get pulled from the forward line after three good quarters in favor of complete and utter *******s like Newton and Sylvia. Abysmal decision, abysmal players, abysmal finish. Absolute joke, I'm absolutely filthy.

Couldn't agree more. Have absolutely dropped off Juice. Not interested in playing %'s, flies one-handed and then won't bend over to get a ground ball. For us to more forward this year there can be no passengers!
