Game Day NAB Cup Round 1 - Hawthorn v Brisbane

I think the best way to sum this whole situation up is this

We are all proud and passionate lions supporters and seeing our team completely dominated just didn't sit well with any of us regardless of who was playing. None of us can handle our jersey, club and team being that uncompetitive. It is the sort of game we never use to have to watch, it would have been played at Leongatha and we would have all said, shit that was bad and moved on. Unfortunately we had to witness it!
I didn',t don't have Foxtel.Was funny seeing all the comments though.:p
Onya Leppa.:thumbsu:

The game was played here in Melbourne. There are 50,000 ex Fitzroy supporters here. A good showing may have snagged a few memberships.
Oh Micky ........if any ex Fitzroy fans were interested they would have been on board in 2001,2002.2003.

Yeah with all respect, where was this 50,000 when the administrators were knocking at Fitzroy's door?

Not questioning the passion of Fitzroy supporters, just that somewhat questionable number.

It is a questionable number. It might be 30,000.it might be 60,000. It is certainly tens of thousands. My whole family barracked for Fitzroy. The whole street barracked for Fitzroy and most of the suburb barracked for Fitzroy. Even today with an extended family of more than 20, at least 10 still keep an eye on how Brisbane are going. Just wanted to make the point that strong on field performances increases interest in the general population which can translate into more supporters, members, sponsorships & TV coverage etc.

Regarding where was the 50,000 when the Administrators were knocking on the door. That can be answered more eloquently by others. It's well documented (I had a good answer but it would have sent everyone to sleep) However there is one thing that we should learn from that sorry saga. The Brisbane Lions must become strong financially. If we become dependent on the AFL for handouts we will always have to do their bidding. The AFL are quite capable of speaking with forked tongue, and their interests do not always coincide with our interests. They want us to be successful.. but not too successful.

We had a lot of players out but off the top of my head Hawthorn were also without most of their backline and it seemed to function pretty well against a much taller and more experienced forward line from teh Lions. The young Hawks backs knew what they were supposed to do and played to plan. By doing so the NZ rookie looked bloody good and Cheney looked like a KP. Wanganeen looked like a major talent. FM they had one experienced player at the back and that was Suckling who was out for most of last year. There were missing Birchall, Lake, Gibson, Schoenmakers, Hodge, Whitecross from their back unit.

I agree with a lot of what you've said here, BUT It's easy for a young defensive line to look good at against starved forwards receiving pressured kicks from outclassed mifielders and wingers. Even Mayes whose delivery is normally quite silky wasn't really putting the ball out to the forwards advantage, or even field kicking that well.

I've often spoken about how well Green and Lisle work together, but Green's delivery and decision making weren't as polished as usual.

I don't want to make excuse or apologise for the poor performance, because it really was woeful. But first game against blokes you don't train with is bound to have cobwebs, even for the 'senior' players, and even more so for the young cubs. Chuck in the other factors of who they were playing and the changes in role/direction/plan from Leppa and you really do have a perfect storm for a flogging.

I know just from watching my Div3 QAFA team play against itself we are cheering about how good our skills look and how competitive we'll be this year... this Friday night we play against Coomera in a scratch match (last year Coomera won the Div 3 GF and have moved up to Div 2). I suspect we'll have just as many reality checks as the Lions did on Thursday night.

Fwiw, for the first 15 minutes or so, I think I saw a remote resemblance of a game plan. Ridiculous, I know. More Lions fans would have seen Jupiter than a game plan that night, but here goes.

Our first 4 or 5 inside 50s we pushed up and were rarely outnumbered by the Hawks. This fell to pieces after that, but I'm clutching at straws here! IIRC our 1st quarter goal came when a player intercepted a rushed kick out of Hawthorn's defence (who might have been further back with Voss' game plan), then kicked it to Close who got it forward and we got a fluky goal. Pushing numbers up, there was ample opportunity for goals out the back for the Hawks, which were a fair bit more recognisable than any forward pressure we put on  We also hardly ever used the corridor I hope this was a tactic not poor football. Lots of numbers around the contest too, a shame all the Hawks guys got out the back and murdered us with their silky ball use.

Also in our goal Jordy Lisle feels for body contact, then instead of trying to bump his opponent (Burgoyne) out the way he evades him and arcs his run to the contest. He then can't get the ball at the highest point and doesn't mark it as the spoil comes in front of him. It's worrying that that is his first instinct. Surely our full forward should be shoving Shaun Burgoyne out of the road then charging at the footy.

Who do you play for Karix?

It looked to me like we had two methods of bringing the ball forward. The first was fast break style footy. It appeared to me that if we could move the ball quickly (ie after a turnover), the players had a licence to play quick, "Geelong style" rebound footy. However, if that wasn't possible, it seemed that the intent was to go wide and deliberate, looking for targets within touching distance of the boundary. The second part may be what is new about our game plan. I never got the impression that the ball movement method under Voss was that defined/simple.

Bringing this to the forward line, I thought I saw a tendency to put the ball deep into a pocket, unless the delivery was quick. A few times, marks were taken outside 50 and we kicked very wide and deep. Obviously, the intent would have been to create a stoppage and try and generate a scoring opportunity from that or press up defensively to lock the ball in.

Nothing too remarkable or new but that seemed to me to be a couple of the bare bones of what we wanted to do, in a simplified way anyway.

Then again, it may take several rounds to get our heads around what is trying to be achieved and it is always a lot more difficult to get a handle on it watching from TV. I tend to learn a heap more about structure when I see games live so am looking forward to round 2.

Was pretty impressed with Bourke, Robbo, Aish, Close and for the little bit of time he spent on the ground, Freeman was pretty impressive. Led pretty well and has a good set of hands. Out of all the new players, Bourke and Freeman impressed me the most, expected the others to do pretty well. I'm calling it now, Freeman will be our key forward in a few years. Bookmark it.

Raines was terrible. When he got the ball he gave it off to someone who had a Hawks player right next to them. Really can't see him being in our team going forward. West was pretty disappointing, expected a lot more out of him. Lisle is not the answer.

Looking forward to our next game and how some of the kids do with a more experienced team around them.

Leppa needs to give everyone licence to air speccy, air spoil and bump Lisle in their day to day business. Either get him so used to contact that he is no longer afraid of it, or so angry at people invading his personal space and jostling him around all the time that he blows up during a game against an opposition player. Gentle giants when they reach breaking point are the scariest mofos out there.

Yeah, let's enrage him.

I volunteer to buy him a soy latte when he really wants a skinny flat white.

Well that was a triumph!

For the iPad AFL app. The picture was great on the home wireless network and the stream rarely stuttered.

Shame about the footy. I'm choosing to go with the "the kids have been blooded and shown the standard" line of thought. Yep, my name is Pollyanna and I have the most marvelous pigtails"

Here's my take on on what we can take out of the game:
  1. We brought new players in at the rate of GWS and GC17 not like Geelong (i.e. 1 or 2 at a time)
  2. Leppa used the game with the view of getting the newbies a good feel for AFL vs anything else they've played
  3. We dont want to wear out the settled players in the 22 - its a very long season (to the last weekend in Sept)
  4. Leppa has some more info on who might take a forward spot
  5. What were Hawthorn thinking putting that many frontline players at risk
  6. A better guide, although not definitive, will be against GC
Re point 1: not even G A Jnr could do anythhing about a 149 pt walloping against ESS in their first game, and that was with the help of some experience and some serious talent in their kids.

I know, maybe this should be in the positives thread...

Removes rose coloured glasses...

Go lions!!!!

It's hard to see much resemblance of a game plan when the skills were as poor as they were. Disappointingly it was the mature players as well as the youngsters. The amount of times I saw a 10m handball that fell at the feet of their teammate, or a 20-30m pass under no pressure that completely missed the target, was quite frustrating. You can make a case for the younger players having nerves and such, but it wasn't just them.

I'm not surprised the mature heads had problems, it's hard to soar like an eagle...I won't finish that thought.

Tempted to go through some of the stuff on the main board and find a few Richmond posters who took particular joy in seeing the BL result..

^ This. Sure a smashing is not great, and most of the time who generally can't get a lot from it, but Thursday was special circumstances. It was half the team's first AFL standard game. Hopefully the game showed the draftees that this is where you are at, and this is where you should strive to be at. It's clear in recent years we've had a number of young draftees who think they already have the ability to be apart of any good team..
