Not long to go until we head down to Tassie for the clash against Hawthorn in the first round of the NAB Cup. This year we might see a few more senior player's make an appearance in the first major hitout of the year beacuse of the early start to pre season training, but essentially, it will be a young team that we take in.

Taking injuries and late starters into account, the team might look something like this;

B. Bevan, Richards, Brennan

HB. Malceski, LRT, Laidlaw

C. Mattner, Kirk, Thornton

HF. R. O'Keefe, White, Barlow

F. Buchanan, Grundy, Davis

R. Jolly, Goodes, Schmidt

Inter. Bird, Playfair, Moore, Currie, D. O'Keefe, Veszpremi

The team doesnt include guys who had post season operations like Hall, Everitt, Kennelly, Ablett, C. Bolton and elder stateman like J. Bolton, Fosdike, Crouch, Mathews and Barry.

A win and we play either Port (AAMI) or Carlton (Telstra Dome) on the 23rd February. A loss and its anyones guess.

Only 38 days to go and counting.

That looks like a good team.

This may seem like a dumb question but is the NAB Cup shown on Foxsports?
Yes. It has been shown in the past.

It has always annoyed me that the Swans always lose their first game. The only chance in the year to see the young Swans up against other AFL standard young players and the Swans get kicked out in the first week.

A lot of players seasons have come to be effectively over in the pre season comp. Been out of it can be a blessing in disguise.

Your better of losing the first round and playing off in two consecutive grand finals rather than winning the NAB Cup and finishing last. :D But I get what you're saying. It would be nice to watch the youngsters live.

I saw a NAB Cup game at the Telstra Dome against the Bulldogs a fews years back and we were deplorable. We only kicked 6 or so goals for the day. It was a double header. The other game was St.Kilda vs Richmond so it was a great day at the footy.

Does anyone have a general fixture? If the Swans do make it, and are going to be playing in Sydney, I might head down for the games.

The Swans play the winner of the Port Adelaide vs Carlton game at either AAMI Stadium or at Telstra Dome. Regardless of how far the Swans advance, they will not be playing in Sydney due to the cricket being played at the SCG. I also doubt that Telstra Stadium will be used either.

This years NAB cup may be a little diffrent for us than the last few. Some fringe/younger players are going to be given main jobs to do and will be assessed on how they do them as the next couple of years will see a lot of them stepping into the side. Moore will probably play centre with Schmidt roving. Brennen and LRT will be holding down the back line why Grundy will need to present in the forward line.

I will be looknig at the scenario of how these young players go at the role they will be asked to play rather than the scoreboard.

Im kind of hoping to see Murphy playing for the Swans in 2009. He sounds like a real gun and i could easily see him being one of the Swans best players in afew years time.

I think there is very little chance of seeing Murphy in the NAB Cup. He hadn't joined competitive training up until xmas. He was still hoaning his skills and watching videos. I think he should have a year in the reserves before he gets a run in next years NAB Cup. Lets not put to much pressure on the kid.

If the Swans are do well this year then you wont see Murphy play but if the Swans have a horror season i think we may see Murphy play a match or two towards the end of the season.

I don't think Kirk needs to play both games (if he needs to play at all), hand the captaincy to Goodes or Malceski in the NAB cup and see how much leadership they offers. I hope to see Schmidt play a much more prominent role int he midfield and the likes of Jack, Brabazon and even Nick Smith and O'Dwyer in the side.

With the new interchange rules we are better of losing the first game as the restrictions on the bench do not apply in challenge games. I hope in the tassie game we play our seconds and if needs be resort to playing a man short on the ground if the players get too tired at any point (this won't happen). To restrict the number of interchanges is asking to increase the number of injuries. Complete stupidity.

Roosy was on SEN this morning and basically siad that we wont be seeing to many senior player's make to trip to Tassie. A squad of 27 player's has already been selected and this has to be cut by 1 for the game. Of the senior player's making the trip will be ROK, LRT, Buchanan, Richards and Mattner. The team will be largely made of our our kids.

Really looking forward to it. Can't wait!

Im really interested to see what the Swans forward line looks like without Hall and O'Loughlin.
