The Lions suffered a little in the media last year due to their poor form but I can sense a revival if they can claim the NAB Cup next weekend. AFL was well ahead of rugby up there before last year and even though the Lions struggled and the Broncos won the rugby cup, we still saw Lions crowds equal Broncos crowds. Imagine if it was the other way around. You would see 40,000 at Lions games and 10,000 at Broncos games. If the Lions can beat Carlton which they should we should see footy take pole position again. Once this happens it will be easier for the second Queensland team to take a foothold then the media favouite that is rugby (only because news limited pays for it and owns the game) will be screwed.

Are you serious??

I think Carlton will win quite comfortably!

Shocking post.

AFL has never overtaken Rugby League, or even Rugby in Brisbane.

A pre-season cup means didly squat compared to a NRL premiership up here. We haven't even seen our side play yet this year.

The game is growing at an incredible rate, but it's hard to see it ever overtaking the Rugby codes in popularity. At least not for a few decades yet. A pre-season cup win with half a team of "no-names" is not going to tip the scales.

Footy Rules Australia...The fact that you keep referring to league as 'rugby' makes me wonder if you actually live in Sydney at all, let alone read the papers or watch TV enough there to be able to make a comment on how much coverage each sport gets.

plus the broncos won the premiership last year. i would not start going to watch the broncos just because they were in the final of a pre-season cup, and were still at high odds to take the spoon...especially if the lions had won the premiership the year before.

I'd like to know the last time the bronco's got 10,000 to a match, if ever, I know the Bears and Lions have a fair few times, no, make that a lot of times, but I don't remember the bronco's ever getting that low, even during the SL war.

Congrats to the Broncos on a thrilling win in the Rugby Cup. Its no NAB cup, for sure, but congratulations all the same.

I've got friends and relatives in Brisbane and they never shut up about the Lions, they tell me Rugby League and Queensland pride are super uncool in Queensland now. They say to me "What a shame Shane Webcke played in the Rugby Cup. If only he had played AFL he could have been drafted to St. Kilda and really have done QLD proud - Nick Riewoldt style"
They are thrilled to bits that a Victorian team is coming to represent the Gold Coast, too. "We just felt super bad for merging their team with a Victorian one and moving it here to Brisbane. We're so glad now they can have their own Victorian team."

It sounds made up, I know. But its not. Queenslanders just love everything about Victoria, and just can't wait to throw away their own sporting history and culture for whatever scraps Victoria feeds them.

I have been in Sydney for a few years and its hard if you are a footy fan. There are many footy fans here, but the media would have you think that every second person loves NRL. This is far from true.

If the Lions win the NAB Cup, the only thing it will do is keep their existing fans interested enough to go to a few early games and put some extra cash in the bank to help shield them from the hard times ahead.

It's true.

There are some AFL fans in Sydney, but the vast majority follow rugby league. At best the AFL would be hoping that rugby league fans embrace AFL and therefore they support their exisiting NRL team, as well as adopt an AFL team as well. This is very tough work indeed, as the AFL administration are finding out.

I can tell you now more people are interested in the new titans team than brisbane doing anything in the afl at the moment. Give it a few weeks and the afl will be the sport most focused on again.

There are a few great Brisbane supporters, I know many. But it's going to be an interesting year for all the idiot Brisbane Lions fans(NRL bandwagoners) who knew no-one else but "Akermanis" and Voss".. I can see it now, round 16..... Idiot Brisbane fan "Did you see Aker on the weekend? he kicked 5 goals" ....."Me:yeah mate, but he plays for the doggies now"....."Idiot:What?He's playing for Canterbury?"
