Jesus Christ Bea. For the sake of repeating myself:

Now get back to being useful boy. $60 diesel, and check me oil and water while you're at it.

ROTF! :D Was always funny hearing Bea's stories of what it was like working at BP Waterloo of a Saturday night. He often had to go to work after Swans Saturday night games, which meant we were drinking & he wasn't (how unusual that scenario is)

JF
PS:- Hicham, he doesn't work at the servo any more. ;)

But at 59 seconds of this Youtube clip, his flag makes an appearance.

That's probably what he tells you JF. I was in Sydney not long ago and I swear I saw the walrus restocking the franger machine and shovelling an enormous **** out of the dunnies.

A man like Bea's gotta have a night job.

Rubbish Helix. You're doing nothing of the sort.

"It's not Rugby League heartland"

"It's an AFL city"

Unless you speak some obscure form of English or Monganese, then it's pretty much black and white.

Step aside Beaussie.
I guess people will make up there own minds.

Just as an aside - I was pleasantly surprised when I went shopping yesterday morning. I of course have 25 or more footy shirts/jumpers in my wardrobe - they tend to get thrown on as if they were any other shirt these days - so it's not uncommon that if I'm heading down the shops I'm wearing a Lions shirt.

We live in Redlands - about 20klm south east of the Gabba. We encountered SEVEN different men wearing Lions footy jumpers yesterday morning. A few folks wearing Lions caps, and 4 others wearing Lions shirts.

We encountered/saw ZERO folks wearing Broncos and Reds shirts/jumpers and caps, and ONE 8yo boy wearing a North Qld Cowboys shirt.

It was good to see.

Uh, where exactly was this? I've lived here for over a decade and can count the number of AFL jerseys I've seen on one hand. Compared to seeing Maroons, Kangaroos, Wallabies, Broncos, Bulldogs, Dragons & Knights jerseys all over the place.

Capalaba Park Shopping Centre between 9.30am and 11.45am yesterday. Even one of the blokes manning the Foxtel display outside Kmart was wearing one while the other 3 were wearing plain clothes.

Took me completely by surprise as well.

Well the AFL's plan to place a 2nd team in QLD and NSW to facilitate weekly AFL games in each state will help.

Doubtful that statewide support of AFL will ever surpass statewide support of league though.

You see more of them here too. The style of their tops makes it a decent fashion accesory. The same can't be said about the AFL jumper.

Why should you be surprised. The media like telling people that rugby league is the only game in town in Sydney and Brisbane but that is just a load of carp. The TV ratings for Queensland bumsniffers derby in Brisbane were well below what was anticipated and in contrast the NAB Cup Final was well above the original quotes.

Yeah, that's got a fair bit of truth to it. One of my uncles is a diehard aussie rules player/supporter but only has two jerseys, one Maroons and one Wallabies.

Fantasic figures when you compare them with Friday Night NRL on Channel 9 with a game involving a) the NRL premiers and b) two QLD teams. Channel 7 would be very happy with those figures I imagine.

Friday night's ratings:

Math rated 185,000 last night in Brisbane. :thumbsu: Great figure, especially for a Saturday night, tradiitonally the weakest night of the week.

When 2 out of the 3 commercial FTA newtorks own the rights to the AFL they tend to push the code very hard - which they have,

The pro-RL media you speak of is Channel Nine and the CM - compare this 'arsenal' to Channels 7 and 10 and it's a pretty fair contest IMO.

The TV ratings for Queensland bumsniffers derby in Brisbane were well below what was anticipated and in contrast the NAB Cup Final was well above the original quotes.
No, the RL figures for Friday were well below what you anticipated - and I'm sure a neutral observer of sport such as yourself would never exaggerate the perceived 'good' viewing figures for RL in Brisbane would you? :)

Likewise with the Lions FTA figures, you would never low-ball the anticpated figure, only to *surprise* be shocked by the 'great' figures would you? No...never...

If I'm not mistaken the FTA figures for the Melbourne Storm beat the FTA figures of the Lions, no? Combined with the other factors at play (Storm match live against the gate, Lions match played away from home) I think it's a very good figure for the Storm.

As for this weekend, a great couple of days for RL in QLD, close to 100,000 people will stream through the gates for two RL matches including 3 QLD teams....great days!:thumbsu:

how did the Storm's Friday night ratings compare to those of the Lions and Swans in QLD and NSW?

Is this supposed to be a serious question?

The Storm played in the match of the round, live on TV on a Friday night in Melbourne, with no competition in Melbourne from the AFL or any other sport.

When was the last time the Swans played in the AFL match of the round on a Friday night live at 7:30 in Sydney, with no competition from Rugby League or anything else? It's never happened, so any comparisons are meaningless.

If the Swans game against West Coast at Telstra Stadium to open the season was played two weeks before the NRL began, was live into Sydney at 7:30 and had no competition form any other sport, then it would get 238,000+ without breaking a sweat.

The Storm match was designed with everything in its favour to get a TV audience in Melbourne. Everything. It even rained a bit during the day to keep people at home!

Sydney and Brisbane games are usually on Saturday nights (traditionally much less a ratings night than Friday nights) and have competition from a Rugby League triple header on Foxtel (30% of NSW have Foxtel), and there is only a 1 in 8 chance that the game will be match of the round, something that is guaranteed with the NRL Friday game.

Typical NRL TV ratings spin. It never bloody ends. If you are going to compare, at least compare apples with apples instead of the usual "apples vs oranges" crap that comes form NRL spin-doctors.

Jeez there sure was a plenty of 'spin' with that response wasn't there?

Who are the 'spin merchants' again? :)

Ironic coming form an NRL person, who are the kings of spin. I think this "spin" from them (the NRL people) comes about because they play second fiddle to the AFL so they need to use selective figure to paint their code in a better light.

Portraying the Melbourne NRL rating as "good" and trying to compare it to Swans AFL Saturday night figures (which have more NRL competition, are on a smaller ratings night and are not necessarily match of the round), without looking at the big picture is selective and not an apples vs apples comparison.

So, why make the comparisons then? Insecurity? Is that the reason?

This is hilarious - you blokes (who 'don't spin' BTW) certainly don't mind throwing in some Warne-esque legwork when it suits you.

I spend my time here exposing NRL spin, not "spinning" my own. It's a moot point anyway, because all you are doing is trying to deflect attention away from my post. How about actually responding to it, and explaining why you think the Storm game is even roughly comparable with a Swans Saturday night game? Forgot about that did we?

The more important figure is how well/badly the storm game rated in Melbourne.

If League didn't originate out of Sydney, it would much bigger than it is now.

I don't think the game is bad, it just comes from a city that doesn't give a stuff about anything but major sports events.

Had AFL and NRL been from the opposite cities, NRL>AFL in terms of crowds, $$$ etc.

Only parts of Western SYdney like the Dogs and the 3 queensland teams seem to turn out no matter what.

Last night's Storm vs Tigers match was great. It had hard hits, good running etc. If the AFL becomes more soft, I can see people turning towards NRL more. People prefer hard games in this country and not softer games.
What crap there were only 13,000 at OP that still holds 18,000 and how come the match wasnt at Telstra Dome?
If you think that is great you are surely joking.RL will never be more than acuriosoty in Melbourne.
Lets see Eddie put the thugby up against an AFL game on 7 or 10 in prime time.

He never would because he doesn't want to get flogged again in the ratings like he did last Friday night. Channel 9 is about making money not throwing it away. The Swans might not get massive ratings in Sydney on a Saturday night but at least they regularly win their timeslot.

Are you sure about that?

When is the last time they got 200,000 for a H & A game?

& Beaussie you have erred in interpreting the ratings figures.

The 187,000 was for the replay of the Storm v West Tigers in Brisbane. It was shown on the 9.30pm to 11.30 pm time-slot. The live Broncos v Cowboys game shown live got 332,000. It was shown on the 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm timeslot. BTW the same game last year rated about 290,000 but it was played on Sunday afternoon.

The last time I looked the populations of Melbourne & Brisbane (for TV rating purposes) were 3.8 million for Melbourne & 2.7 million for Brisbane. If you divide the TV audience of the NRL game in by the population of Melbourne i.e .238 /3.8 you get 6.1%.

Likewise if you divide the AFL audience in Brisbane by the population i.e. .185 / 2.7 you get 6.85%.

So it is a bit idiotic to argue that the AFL ratings were good in Brisbane & the NRL's were poor in Melbourne when the percentage of the population in each city watching the games was about the same.

There is a far greater number of TV viewers for Friday night than Saturday night. comparing absolute numbers is worthless. Compare % of viewers per day.
