LOL. I wonder if that's the shortest team ever to be named at top level Aussie Rules. By my reckoning there's are only 5 players on that list taller than 190cm - and the biggest of them only 196cm.

Given that White is going to have to ruck, I wonder if they'll use Barlow at CHF (with Grundy further back towards the goal square).

And who on earth is going to play on Franklin?!!
Surely going into a game with no genuine rucks is asking for trouble injury-wise?

btw good to see Terlich named in the squad. He has a lot of likeable attributes, but doesn't really dominate games across 4 quarters. If he's improved his fitness and work-rate, he'll be one of the better rookies taken from the 07 draft IMO.

At least some of the younger guys can get the taste of defeat they will otherwise miss out on by playing in Canberra.

Probably LRT I would think. Unless they want to give poor Reg the old run around in defence again or chuck in a youngster like Faulks or Bruce.
I reckon it will have to be LRT simply because there is no-one else. But while he's done reasonably well on leading forwards who like to run hard and in straight lines, I suspect Buddy's speed and agility will be too much for him. White may actually be the one with the most suitable physical attributes but hard to make work if he's having to ruck too.

Faulks is too skinny, slow and hasn't shown much in the way of footy smarts. Barlow might have some kind of chance, but I'd rather see him given the licence to try and make the play, rather than have his confidence shattered by getting a Franklin towel-up. Grundy doesn't have the height or speed, and in any case we'll need him to provide some kind of tall target in the forward line - since there's no-one else to do so.

I understand that Roos listens to the medical staff at this time of year in determining who's ready to play (and given the track record with injuries under him it is hard to be critical) but it's a real shame that a couple of Goodes, Jolly or our newest captain aren't available. They have the experience to marshall the youngers troops and provide a clear head. We'd almost certainly still get comfortably beaten even if a couple of these were in but I suspect the young midgets would learn more about where they are at with just a little more height and experience around them.

Does Terlich play in the midfield?

I've never seen him play there, apart from the odd 5 minute burst. I don't think he has to endurance or the footy smarts to play there, he's more of a HB/HF flanker type, played more forward at TAC level, but he has all the attributes to be a good HBF'er IMO.

What he is though, is quick, very physical, great overhead and has good skills on both sides of his body. Struggling to think of a player to compare him to style-wise - maybe Aaron Hamilish, but plays further up the ground, but not as good/strong in one-on-one contested marking situations.

I've never really agreed with Roosy in relation to his treatment of the NAB cup. I would prefer to see all our starting players having as much match practice as possible before round 1. Perhaps if all our starting players had enough match practice under their belts, it would address our sluggish starts to the season.
The brilliant Interchange Policy helps there. Otherwise, at least over half of our main 22 players would have been playing too.

Young list! Not used to seeing something this young being labelled as the Sydney Swans. Maybe the inexperience factor at the nearly-but-not-quite top level will help them get through it?

I wish I could watch this game, but seems like i can't :(

I have to say as a hawk supporter im very worried about this sunday. Id be filthy if one of our players pulled a hammy or did a knee for a pointless game like this. Perhaps Roos being the wise old coach is being conservative for a good reason

Great to see Birdy get a run. He may not be tall ,all that quick but what he has got is a great ticker and fantastic attitude...looking forward to seeing an honest footballer running around this year.

Does anyone know the starting line up or has only the list been released. If it hasn't, here's my guess.

B: Peter Faulks, LRT, Keiren Jack
HB: Paul Bevan, Nick Malceski, Ben Matthews
C: Martin Mattner, Jude Bolton, Kristin Thornton
HF: Ryan O'Keefe, Ed Barlow, Jarrad McViegh
F: Nick Davis, Heath Grundy, Daniel O'Keefe
R: Jesse White, Amon Buchanan, Jared Moore
INT: Craig Bird, Ryan Brabazon, Brett Merideth, Nick Smith, Matthew O'Dywer, Matthew Beckmans, Aaron Bruce, Dean Terlich

not a bad line up

id like to see how grundy went at full forward

barlow will spend some time in the midfield perhaps in a goodes style role?

im looking forward to seeing bird play the most out of this match.

Its time for moore to show he can be a regular senior player as well

Seriusly I would like to see Nick Davis in the midfield today... just so we can ensure he is getting a fitness work out before the real season kicks off.

It will never happen as looking at the Swans list for the game we are seriously lacking in forward options while we have a million small midfielders. Davis and ROK are our only regular team forwards playing today so both of them need to stay in the forward line and kick a bag full of goals.

FANTASTIC effort....a two-point loss and we were a winning chance right to the end, just fatigue and a lack of composure cost us....we kicked 6 goals to 2, but the hawks managed 3 nine-pointers, so we have to take a great deal of encouragement about that
the only worry is what seemed a an injury to malceski, who i didn't even think was playing, hopefully not serious
only saw the game in bits and pieces, but some real good signs

Sounds like Malceski did his ACL. Terrible news.

Other than that, great performance from a very undermanned Swans team.
