Our young boys were fantastic we played very well
one loss i dont mind showed some very good signs of a good season to come
Hope Eski is ok the only down side
Loved Mattner and Bird
all the you kids were very good loved O'Keefe
cant wait 2 see more :)
bird, barabazon, jack, jesse white, young meredith and whoever the kid in Number 43 was, all of them seemed to go okay
also thought LRT looked triffic, even bevan went well
apart from the obvious (malch) it was a very positive first game
it is a complete bstard, though, about malch

yes, o'dwyer, i thought he did some good things
and i'm getting the idea now that malch's injury may not be season-ending, although they said that about kennelly and it obviously was an ongoing problem

Hopefully that's the case. I'll take anything other than an ACL at this moment.

Out of the kids, I thought Bird showed signs of a good player. Moore did really well, think he should really be knocking on the door for the first 22. And White looks impressive - to me, he looks to have better all round skills than Grundy does.

Barlow looks a bit confused about his role and Thornton looks okay in the half-back role.

Out of the older guys, I thought Buchanan did well (though he still has to work on his disposal a bit).

Before Round 1 somebody should show the Swans players where the boundary line is and explain to them that you should not kick the ball over this line.

I'm with rancidpants here. Obviously I'm a bloke, but the smaller O'Keefe's taste in hair-style was frankly...well, I can't find the word for it, that's how bad it was.

Think Schneider would be disappointed to hear himself compared to DOK in terms of looks...

a lot of it seemed from tiredness, certainly in that last quarter...few of the young swans seemed out on their feet

i didn't see the game completely, gotta watch tape tonight, but i thought mcveigh was again shown up by almost all our young midfield types, he looked indecisive and weak
am i being too harsh?
i thought bird, jack, o'dwyer, moore, beckmans and meredith all showed more potential than mcveigh has shown in 5 years with the club

Your guys are our bogey team no doubt about it. If it was a regular season game, the Swans would have had the win today.

I like the look of your youngsters, they are playing the hard brand of football expected at Sydney. They put a lot of pressure on our guys.

Paul Roos just may have the midas touch in developing players.

Good point about McVeigh: short crappy little jabs across the ground for turnovers and rarely is at the contest. Contrast Brabazon and Thornton: hard at hard it running players who never flinch at a contest. In fact eat a contest for breakfast. I like the way both players are prepared to push back and fill the hole and put their bodies on the line. Far better disposal also so I will be mystified if one of these 2 don't play round 1.

On Bird, J Bolton must now be under severe pressure to keep his spot. Bird has uncanny clearance skills, maybe because his brain thinks just that tad quicker than most others. You would have to say that he did Mitchell like a dinner for 3 quarters. Bolton is only nuisance value at centre bounces. Bird also has far superior pace and skills. Must be a walk up start for round 1.

Forgot Jesse White. He is mobile, quick and takes a grab. Play him up forward with Hall and he could do serious damage.

What they must do is blend in a few of this very good young players right at Round 1. On that game at least 3-4 would eqiup themselves very well.

Lets hope that some of those iffy blokes who had runs of 3-4 poor games or more in 2007 but retained their spots get the royal boot because of poor form in 2008, because there is no excuse for them to keep their spots now that our young talent has been exposed and have put their hands up for a spot.

i've been keen on white since last preseason, and he looked good what i saw today
as i said, have to watch the tape properly tonight
but on mcveigh, that's exactly what i thought, typified by one part of the last quarter, he got the ball on the far side just outside attacking 50, and his pass infield was a squirter, from memory it went scrubbing well away from the intended teammate to two hawks players
he also looked like he squibbed a 50-50 ball in the same part of the field
maybe i'm looking at him too harshly, will check my tape tonight

but bird looked triffic, same with brabazon, moore and meredith

I reckon the usual suspects are being a bit hard on McVeigh today. I thought that his performance was pretty good today. He had 18 possessions and had the most effective kicks for the Swans. Also recognised as amongst the best players on the Swans site - Mattner, Buchanan, Roberts-Thomson, McVeigh, Bird, Jack.

Agree that Bird was great - super impressive for his first game. Jesse White was also very impressive.

Saw the whole game and thought McVeigh did okay to good (won some clearances, some good switches of play).
I'm not as sold on O'Dwyer and Brabazon - they won some footy (and O'Dwyer kicked a goal), but I thought their foot skills and decision making skills were fairly average (sometimes outright poor). Same for Beckmans, Terlich etc.

Of the younger guys, Moore should be in the starting 22, I think - his work off the ball was outstanding and he showed a good footy brain as well as evasive skills, especially now that we've lost Schneider...and Malceski for the season
He will definitely be on the bench and maybe play more as a small forward - now that Mattner will take up a HBF spot, I think Barlow will probably spend a lot more time as a flanker.

I would put Bird right into the mix as well, especially if Ablett is not fit. Definitely looks like an AFL level player with clean skills and good vision (and since he's as good as a second-year player). I don't think Meredith had done a lot. Jack showed some really encouraging signs (though again kicking let him down), but he definitely has the pace and agility to go past his man, so I really hope he doesn't get turned into a Matthews/Crouch like tagger.

And I like Thornton's game - not necessary his performance today, but the skills he showed, would be a handy player in the senior level in my opinion.
