A lot of European players would rank Roland Garros above Flushing Meadows. Many would rank it above Wimbledon... there are plenty of claycourt specialists who grow up dreaming of victory at the French Open above all other tournaments.

Its role as the 'last frontier' for many players also increases its prestige. A multi-slam winner who has the FO in his/her trophy cabinet is often considered more versatile than one who has the same number but has traditionally failed at Roland Garros.

Replying to TP and Caesar's points. I don't dismis anything you ay but just a couple of points.

It is true that Borg is not regarded as a clay bully despite 6 RG titles. But TP try this at work...ask a few sports minded people what the name Borg signifies to them. They will say something like this" great old tennis player. Won Wimbledon lots of times in a row. " Words to that effect. It is for Wimbledon he is remembered by the general sporting public. For winning on the very biggest stage.

Tiger Woods. People remember the Masters titles most vividly. The USPGAs blur. Even the US Opens blur to an extent but hat green jacket, those vividly coloured flowers etc. Augusta the only US golf event that burns itself into the general public mind.

Caesar's points about RG are well made but i still think that the hierarchy established over time is still there. The gaps are not huge but the players with most public impact - McEnroe, Connors, Becker, Borg, Federer, Sampras - tend to be the ones who have dominated at Wimbledon or Flushing Meadows. Those names undeniably trip off the general sporting publics tongue easier than lendl, Wilander, etc.

I agree that Nadal needs to go slam hunting, even though he's just 23.

He can beat anyone in the world on any surface when he's fit, and his achievements at his age are ridiculous. Would be a shame if he fell from the top, coz whether you're a fan of him or not (same goes for fed), he adds to the competition and hence excitement and spectacle.

I thought if you play every Grand Slam you are slam hunting. I think he has had a career so far to be proud of. He has won six Grand Slams. Lleyton Hewitt has wasted hes career. I think Rafa is a level headed kid. Maybe hes knees are in a bad way. No one knows hes body better then Rafa himself. To pull out of Barcelona would have been so difficult being Spanish. If it was not for Rafa tennis would be boring and Federer would be up to 23 Grand Slams. If think you Power King are being way to harsh on Rafa.

nadal will come back and win a lot of important games within the next year and propably go downhill from there

Nadal has endured a fair bit of hardship away from the courts this past year, with his parents going through a very bitter divorce. As the oldest child in his family, this has affected him greatly. Kudos to the kid for battling through this and injury to get back on the horse. Well done Rafa.

If Fed is in a decline and is still winning 2 slams a year I'm sure he doesn't give a shit.
